Sometimes I feel like crap because I can't afford salon prices

I realise it's first world problems in comparison to the cost of living crisis currently, but there are times I feel crap about the fact I can't afford beauty treatments and stuff like fillers and botox when so many people I know are having it done. I take excellent care of my skin and body at home but sometimes just kinda wish i could afford the more popular treatments that everyone raves about . I realise I'm probably just being silly and it's a case of fomo, but does anyone else relate and what are some of the things you do to feel good about yourself?

And just to add some of us naturally have big lips.

They don't look identical or like eggs

I think they do. They all look highly unnatural. "hardboiled eggs" was quite a good description. Plus the lips, which look as if they've been made out of Playdoh and then stuck on.

OP, you aren't missing anything.

It's complete bollocks to say that well-done Botox isn't noticeable. It really is. The only people who say it isn't are those who either have it or who are paid to carry it out.

@PolkadotZebrasAndStripyGiraffes Can I ask, do you consider these images to look tacky and ugly?

All of the women are groomed with lash extensions, brows and some Botox etc.

I think they look weird and fake, yes, almost alien-like in some cases and all of those women would look far better without the strange eyebrows etc IMO. People can have different opinions. The photo of someone's nails I don't understand. It looks like something anybody could do at home with a bottle nail varnish if they wished to.

The weird pouty lips are also really creepy looking. Such a shame that otherwise attractive people want to make themselves look like a cartoon caricature of themselves. Sad

Yes, which then looks natural because it is, and suits the person's face!

Oh dear. If your reason for doing it is because you want to look better than other people that's even more sad. Sad

It's also a shame so many women's confidence and belief in their value is depends on how they look.

And none of us said anything about our ages or being "maids". HmmConfused

A really good nutritious diet and plenty of exercise makes people look more beautiful right up to the end of life

PenguinTattoo · 12/05/2023 20:42

This year I decided to treat myself and have had the following:
Microblading top up (they were faded)
3 x painful laser treatments for red veins on cheeks & one facial
Regular gel nails (every three weeks)
This has cost me over £1k.
I can see minimal difference in my brows or cheeks and my nails are falling apart (soft and splitting even with gel on). It was a complete waste of money!

I always think having things done professionally will make a difference and it really doesn't. Not for me at least.

Please don't think I am boasting that I could afford all this. I'm not at all. I had an unexpected bonus and thought that for once I would spend £ on myself instead of the house, children, etc. I wish I hadn't.

Eating well, getting outside daily (I WFH) and zero alcohol makes so much more difference for me. And it makes me feel good as well as look better.

Expensive lesson learned. 😪

I'm pro botox and this post is disgusting. As another poster said, don't big up yourself by dimming someone elses light.

ginghamstarfish · 12/05/2023 21:10

I don't think anyone is being catty, but we are all entitled to our opinions aren't we? I too think it's sad that so many women, especially younger ones, think it's the height of 'beauty' to look like blowup dolls. Wear makeup, stay groomed, veat well, stay off booze and fags, all great, but to me it's great to see women retaining some individuality and ageing gracefully.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 12/05/2023 21:14

Almost everyone I know who’s had Botox, fillers etc at my age you can easily tell because they don’t look their age. The worst culprits are the ones who tan, smoke, eat rubbish and drink loads but think because they’ve had tweakments they look ok, they don’t. I also know younger women in their 20s and 30s who look like identikit dolls, all fake lashes and lip filler, I can definitely tell the latter!

The ones their ages who don’t do these tweakments either look natural or they don’t give a shit!

I also follow a z lister celeb who has lots of work done and is in early 40s, so used to do fillers etc and has done Profhilo etc, her skin honestly looks rubbish and she looks way older than she is.

All I use is retinol, vitamin c serum, spf 50 and good diet. Yoga helps too.

I do sometimes think I don’t like sagging by jawline/jiowls or my 11s but they’re not that bad and I’d rather look my age than have a facelift and look like Gillian Taylforth or Joan Collins who are 70/80, look much younger but you know their real age.

My style inspo recently has been Iris Apfel!

^^ up and down this thread people have said how awful they think fillers are as their opinion. But god forbid someone say those without Botox or fillers could look better...

secretsmiler50 · 12/05/2023 22:01

Thanks for the responses everyone. Haven't been able to respond to everyone individually but I have for sure taken on board everything everyone has said. I totally agree that everyone should do what they want for their own face/body. I guess in my case it was more of the fact that so many people I knew were having these tweakments and I was feeling I would end up looking worse than everyone eventually, but y'know self acceptance and self love are wonderful qualities and are something that I have always found attractive in other people, so why shouldn't I offer myself the same in return instead of chasing after things that may not make me feel any happier in myself. Making this post has kinda put things into perspective for me and so many of you gave great responses also❤

Have you checked whether your local college have a training salon on site? They offer very much reduced cost treatments because it's students but they are all supervised. Plus as they are in training they usually have the most up to date treatments and products.

On a side note nobody I know has Botox or fillers unless it's Botox for medical purposes so no I don't relate at all.

You do not want Botox and fillers done by trained beauticians, or any beauticians.

I can afford both Botox and filler, and am never getting them done. Not ' everyone' gets them.

I can easily afford them. It's never occurred to me get them done. Zero interest.

krill · 12/05/2023 22:58

Same for everyone, they just look the age they are but having had stuff “done

I agree with this.

Hbh17 · 12/05/2023 22:59

None of my friends (all middle-aged) would ever dream of having Botox or fillers, and neither would I. It would be a total waste of money. I think you probably need some new friends, as they must be incredibly shallow people. Why not just enjoy your life, because all this other stuff is just irrelevant nonsense.

Maybe I was a bit OTT but it really grinds my gears when some jumped up person has to resort to name calling.

My use of sweetheart was similar to Southern gals saying bless your heart!

I also don’t want Botox at my dental surgery!
