Outfit for very nice dinner

Going to a Michelin starred restaurant for an 'important' birthday of a v good friend.

I've had a rough few months and I want to look as good as I can. I bought a dress but decided its too dressy.

What kind of thing do I go for? I'm 35. Size 10, in reasonable nick. I have no idea what colour palette I am but I've got reddish hair and look nice in jewel colours or pale pink.

In your shoes I would wear a green waistcoat and matching wide leg trousers. In emerald green.

Starplekk · 09/05/2023 20:32

I was also going to suggest emerald green, if you have not tried it before it usually looks simply stunning with red hair.

Would you consider a jumpsuit? I find them a nice cross between dressy and a bit more casual.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 09/05/2023 22:57

I love emerald green, I have a jumpsuit in it but I wear it for work a lot and feel like I want something new (I know that makes me sound awful!)

What did you buy that's too dressy? An evening dress or a ball gown would be too much but apart from that most dressy dresses would be fine.

I bought this (I love it so I'm happy to own it, just hoped it would work but feels too dressy)

I don’t think that’s too dressy at all! It’s lovely

DueyCheatemAndHow · 10/05/2023 21:29

Oh interesting!
The other dress I own which I absolutely love is this one. I feel great in it but heels are hard to match with it

Which restaurant is it @DueyCheatemAndHow?

I've eaten at many Michelin stars, some more glitzy than others.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 10/05/2023 21:36

I don't really want to out myself too much as its a pretty rural one. We went to the fat duck a couple of years ago but it was winter - I find summer so much harder!

I really like the first one you posted OP! I would also say you could go with something like this. It would look lovely with your colouring

Thanks so much! I did actually look at that one but I'm a bit on the short side and midi length doesn't tend to work with me

Ifb

MrsHamlet · 10/05/2023 21:54

If it's L'enclume, it's not very dressy. And I'm jealous!

DueyCheatemAndHow · 10/05/2023 22:21

It isn't :-).

Id go for something with length, short dresses aren’t great for dinners. Or a jumpsuit or wide leg pants with a nice top, perhaps in a silky material

halfpasteleven · 10/05/2023 22:34

I love your first choice OP!

The black and white dress is much nicer.

I don't think it's too dressy. I would wear black tights and black flat shoes- definitely not heels.

I wouldn't wear heels with your other dress either.

Of course you can wear a short dress to a restaurant in the evening. If anything is OTT it's the long green dress another poster linked to.

I would freeze my butt or stick to the chair!

I eat at lenclume twice a year.

TheShellBeach · 10/05/2023 22:50

That first dress looks like a nightie.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 10/05/2023 22:51

Thanks everyone. It's next month so I won't want to wear black tights and my legs would look awful in either dress with flats. Food for thought re short dresses and restaurants though... I'll have another look for something longer

Yes I wouldn't want to wear a short dress to dinner, uncomfy. Love the. Black and white dress otherwise though. Sont think too dressy. Seems a totally different vibe to the floral one you posted (not keen). I always wear a loose knee length dress to dinners to make sure there's lots of room for eating!!

DueyCheatemAndHow · 10/05/2023 22:59

I quite like a retro vibe, the black and white (it's actually pale pink) looks v 60s and the floral is quite 70s. I do absolutely love the floral, its one of my favourite things to wear

NatashaDancing · 10/05/2023 23:02

I bet your legs don't look awful. Sorry but I really don't like heels with short dresses. Both your dresses, especially the black and white, one have a 1960s Twiggy look to them which is always with flats.
