Can this fit better?

I love this colour and the whole dress, but it doesn't fit my size-10-on-the-hips size-8-on-the-top figure so well. I'm quite hourglass and slim on top with curves. Also, a high waist.
Could I get it altered? It's a really fancy 3D fabric with appliqué flowers on top of cotton lace, with a polyester lining.....

I'll ask a seamstress, but what do we think, is it worth it?

It looks better on you than the model. The model one is too tight and looks see through.

Seriously?? I much prefer how it fits the model and the colour looks much nicer too (but I guess that’s a trick of the lighting). I agree with a previous poster that it must be an absolute pain to iron. Perhaps that’s why it doesn’t look as good, to me, as it looks rather rumpled (and even though the OP has to have a lovely figure, this dress does nothing to show it off.) I don’t think I’d waste money altering it. Use the proceeds of the sale to get a dress that fits better and isn’t such a pain to iron😉

Procrastination4 · 03/05/2023 23:29

That yellow dress is much nicer on you-the cut really suits you and it’s a very pretty dress. Leaves the blue rumpled one totally in the shade, in my opinion!

T1gerK1ng · 03/05/2023 23:33

Definitely the yellow! looks stunning.
The fit of the blue just doesn’t work imo

EconomyClassRockstar · 03/05/2023 23:33

If you love it, take it to a tailor. Tailoring clothes is really quite affordable if it means it increases the amount you will wear something. I think you look way better in the original than the yellow which is just blah. Sorry.....

I think the fit is good, but I’m not a massive fan of the dress sorry op, the skin colour slip under isnt doing you many favours! The general shape of the dress is good for your figure though as the detail on the shoulder balances you out (i have a similar shape to you!)

The back view of the blue dress is awful - unless the wearer is happy that it looks as if they're not wearing knickers.

The slightly different green version is numberSelf portrait green dress

I'm in team blue - and think it looks better on you.
The yellow dress looks like a 1000 others.

NatashaDancing · 03/05/2023 23:41

pastabest · 03/05/2023 22:54

The blue one runs the risk of making you look like you have been to the loo drunk and not pulled your spanx back on properly. Sorry! It's just the way the lining sits.

I also don't think the blue is the right colour for you. It washes you out.

I'm not a huge fan of the yellow dress personally but it looks really lovely on you and suits your tones much better.

It does indeed. The skin coloured lining is awful.

minipie · 04/05/2023 00:18

I think you can do better. The blue one fits fine (certainly not worth altering) but is a little fussy. The yellow one is fine but meh.

How about this or this from Reiss?

The blue is nice! Fit is good too but it needs a good iron.

Yellow is nice too but boring.

greenspaces4peace · 04/05/2023 02:41

the blue seems to have strange cut-outs around the nipple. i hate the back view naked butt look.
the blue is fine, but just that, fine nothing special.
the yellow much better.

BusterGonad · 04/05/2023 04:57

I prefer the yellow dress, and it looks like it could be reworn with ease, and won't date so quickly.

sevenbyseven · 04/05/2023 05:14

I really like the blue dress and I think the fit is fine! I'm not so keen on the yellow dress which is more generic and looks a size too big

NatashaDancing · 04/05/2023 05:27

minipie · 04/05/2023 00:35

Karen Millen also worth a look eg this or this

The balloon sleeve dress is beautiful. It's the nicest on the thread by miles.

I was going to suggest as an alternative this however you can see on the model the nude lining is bunched up. I do prefer the colour though and is less fussy than the sky blue dress.

That is much nicer as is the pink version of that dress but both still have the the "is she not wearing knickers?" back view?

GoodChat · 04/05/2023 05:51

The yellow dress is beautiful. That gets my vote.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/05/2023 06:08

The model has her belt done up a lot looser. So I would undo it a notch or two depending on how close the notches are. The lining in the dropped waist area from the waist to the skirt section is bunched up in your pic. I therefore do wonder if it isn’t still a little too small for you on the hip area. This sort of dress needs to not be figure hugging I imagine as you have 2 opposing fabrics to try to smooth down.

As for the yellow dress, it doesn’t look special at all to me personally. It looks like the sort of thing middle aged women wore as workwear when I was younger so it seems a bit frumpy to me. But I appreciate fashion goes in cycles.

I do much prefer the blue. However, I prefer the brighter colour the model is wearing. What about trying the cobalt blue dress posted upthread which doesn’t have a dropped waist? It may be a good option for you as you won’t need to worry about the the hip area fitting. You have a lovely figure. It’s just the dress appears to be designed for someone with a straighter rather than hour glass figure.

WhereAreWeNow · 04/05/2023 06:33

I think it looks great. I don't think it looks too small. What are you unsure about OP?
The yellow one is fine but less unusual.

The bodice area is too big, you can pinch an inch or more either side down the side seam. There are tiny bust darts....

The lining is attached at various points horizontally. I think that is the issue.... a separate lining would 'hang' with the dress skimming the top, but this bunches up. My vertical landmarks - ie waist length, depth of pelvis etc are different to the model and so the lining and dress don't match me up at various points and break up my vertical line.

I'll try on the Reiss balloon sleeve dress, but those things tend to male me look a lot bigger and I don't love a v neck.

It's for Ascot Royal Encl plus an overseas wedding this year.

OP posts:
RidersOnTheCalm · 04/05/2023 06:47

To complicated it, the wedding has a 'no vivid colours ' rule.

EatTheDamnCake · 04/05/2023 06:51

😂 "no vivid colours". What on earth? Weddings do weird things to some couples.

I think either of the ones you've chosen is fine for those requirements, so just choose the one you feel best in.

Do you mean the Karen Millen dress? The Reiss is a plain white/ cream shift. For Ascot and a wedding with that code the KM dress would be perfect for both. It's a cotton and silk mix. It looks far more expensive than the Self Portrait dress.

Does the lining in the Self Portrait dress show more in real life than on the photo? On the photo it looks like a bare bum from the back.

RidersOnTheCalm · 04/05/2023 09:18

Oh yes I mean the KM one. Which means I can't try it know without ordering . Miss them on the high street.
