My SIL is from Canada and apparently it's known as the Canadian tuxedo which always makes me laugh. But yes, I think, eg, a denim shirt and different colour jeans can look good.

NewShoesForSpring · 02/05/2023 13:13

I'm sure it is, but not by me!

DramaAlpaca · 02/05/2023 13:15

Not for me

lalaloopyhead · 02/05/2023 13:19

Absolutely! I love a bit of double denim - always lighter top than bottom though.

SaveMeFromForearms · 02/05/2023 13:19

No, it looks dreadful. Unless you're actually rustling cattle maybe.

Aaron95 · 02/05/2023 13:20

If you are going to watch Status Quo it's compulsary.

satsuuuumas · 02/05/2023 13:20

I like double denim! I personally would always go for a lighter colour shirt and darker jeans

MsMoney · 02/05/2023 13:21

Yes of course!
In the 80s

WhiskersPete · 02/05/2023 13:22

Oh yes. It's so uncool that it's actually cool iyswim

ilovemydogmore · 02/05/2023 13:23

It's very much a trend for this spring (and has been for a while) definitely yes!

But...

DON'T
A tight denim jacket and skinny jeans
Denim jacket and denim mini skirt
Black, white or coloured denim with blue denim

DO
Oversized denim shirt with wide leg jeans
Cropped jacket (e.g. bomber) with denim midi skirt
Denim boilersuit
Same colour blue denim

Completely agree with this. Double denim is definitely having a moment and is on trend for those who dare to embrace it.

Only thing I'd say is that I don't necessarily agree it has to be the same colour to work. I've got a couple newer styles of denim jackets (not the traditional cropped) and I think they look best when paired with a slightly different colour of denim. Not a really big contrast of light with dark. But enough to break the outfit up and make it interesting.

Sorry you are right, in my head I meant 'same toned' denim but typed colour.

NightOwlNotEarlyBird · 02/05/2023 13:35

It's fine if you style it right. I quite like white denim jeans with blue denim shirt.

SaveMeFromForearms · 02/05/2023 13:37

Everything on the DO list is also a DON'T to me 😁

UndercoverCop · 02/05/2023 13:38

As I keep saying to DH , never. Especially if you're a 40 year old man.

Timshortforthalia · 02/05/2023 13:40

I love double denim. I honestly feel really cool in it Grin Blush

mikado1 · 02/05/2023 13:46

I like blue denim shirt with grey/black jeans and as pp with white jeans.

It's the Texas Tuxedo.

deedeemegadoodoo · 02/05/2023 16:26

Yesterday, I wore a mid-blue denim ‘blouse’ (from Matalan, though very French Sezane style), darker jeans with a slight crop. Nike blazer Hi-tops. I thought it looked good. First time for double denim (and I’m old enough to remember Shakin’Stevens) and I’d normally steer clear, but it can look good in the right outfit. I went out for the day with my sister, and received compliments from several people!

Nimbostratus100 · 02/05/2023 16:27

yes! of course it is perfectly acceptable.

TheOGCCL · 02/05/2023 17:11

It’s having a moment and feeling quite fresh and cool. I wore a denim shirt and jeans about the same colour the other day. Maybe a denim jacket and jeans the same colour looks a bit too matchy matchy.

EatTheDamnCake · 02/05/2023 17:14

Yes, it's everywhere ATM (online and IRL). Seems to be having a revival 😄

Will I wear it....? Possibly not, but I'm not cool enough to get away with it.

PToosher · 02/05/2023 18:25

A few years ago I went to a meeting in Holland representing our UK office. The Italian male representative had a denim suit on. And I mean a suit, as in a work suit. With a tie, although that wasn't denim.
I've never seen such a thing!

To be fair the Martha Meyer character in the BBC/Amazon series The English was rustling cattle and looked splendid in double denim.

Is double denim ever acceptable?
broadbeanquiche · 02/05/2023 20:29

Yes if you are going for it and doing the look properly. Not if you're doing a half arsed look.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 02/05/2023 20:56

Yes, of course it is.

I love denim and have been known to wear double and even triple denim. However, the colour and weight of denim is never the same. I think this is what is important - to ensure there's a contrast of colour and texture.
