Waxed jacket

Idiot that I am, I bought a waxed jacket so without thinking it through properly.

I love the jacket itself but am fed up of sponging it down and am longing to bung it through the washing machine!

Has anyone done this? How painful is it relaxing?

I swear I smell like damp dog when I wear it now 😟

Do you have a Barbour? They offer a cleaning/relax service-think it’s about 50 quid.

AllIeveknewonlyou · 28/04/2023 14:06

Sorry I meant rewaxing 🤣

Autocorrect.

I think I may put it through the washing machine anyway and see how it goes. Will take a look at the Belstaff one you like in a sec

@farahway that's really lovely.

Will report back on any changed texture after a wash.

If you haven't already done so, don't bother putting it in the washing machine. Just bag it up and take it to a charity shop.

I'm sure I've read a very similar thread recently and IIRC the advice was not to wash it, you'll ruin it.

So is it high maintenance then? I'm lazy so this may mean difference between buying or not.

KirstenBlest · 28/04/2023 14:46

@farahway , they are not high maintenance but they need reproofing every now and then. If looked after they last indefinitely.
I have no idea why OP needs to be constantly sponging her coat as they generally don't show dirt. They have a distinctive feel and smell though.

I've only had thornproof Barbours, but I think they make lighter coats

Oh I'm a bit messy! And I wore it constantly over the colder months as the central heating wasn't working properly.

Alright I'll try soaking it in a bucket of cold water and see how it comes out. Not used to not being able to put something through the wash, I didn't do my research properly no matter how nice the jacket itself is.

I think that you can, if it’s a Barbour, buy the relaxing stuff and re wax it yourself.

GatherlyGal · 28/04/2023 19:14

I've got a waxed jacket and it's never occurred to me to wash it! Probably I'm just slovenly but I think it looks fine. Mud dries and brushes off

KirstenBlest · 28/04/2023 19:47

Even if you wear it every day, it should be OK.
I really do not recommend immersing it in water.

The coats are not designed for wearing indoors and the dressing tends to rub off on upholstery like car seats.

If it is a Barbour send it for re-proofing.

Mama1978 · 28/04/2023 20:37

I believe Belstaff rewax for free…

Greentree1 · 28/04/2023 21:01

To me they just look well aged if they start to look a bit worn. I've never bothered to redo the coating. Move the old one to garden use and get a new one maybe.

Do you have anything to substantiate that, please?

Mama1978 · 29/04/2023 15:17

Hi, that’s what I was told when buying mine in Cheshire Oaks, they said the jacket would be sent away and I would then have to collect.

KirstenBlest · 29/04/2023 15:42

Thanks. They actually said it was free?

Mama1978 · 29/04/2023 15:52

Yes, they did. I even kept he original receipt just in case. I will ask again next time I pass.

KirstenBlest · 29/04/2023 16:15

Thanks. I had no idea and it sounds too good to be true.
My nearest store is London.

BarkyMatherson · 29/04/2023 16:17

No, don’t wash them. They smell lush when warn in, the scent of the Cotswolds circa 1989 😆😆
