Waxed coat

I made a huge mistake here. The coat itself is lovely but I am fed up of sponging it down and am very tempted to just bung it through the washing machine.

Has anyone done this? I should have factored in my slob quotient, I don't have the patience to rewax.

No, you'll totally ruin it, definitely do not put it in a washing machine.

Without wishing to slob-shame, what on earth are you doing in your coat that requires frequent sponging/washing? I am a massively clumsy slob, and (apart from raincoat type things that have got muddy while camping) haven't needed to wash my coats.

For mud on a wax jacket, let it dry then brush it off with a soft-bristled brush. You don't want a wax jacket looking all shiny and new anyway, they're supposed to look a bit country!

It will no longer be waterproof, so for me, it wouldn't be worth it

you can send it to Barbour and they'll re-wax it for you if you can't be arsed, but it isn't a really big thing to do yourself

Read the care label. It will almost certainly say do not wash it.
You can get a spray that will re-wax.

What are you doing in your coat, mine is 4 years old and I have done nothing to my waxed coat, not even sponged it off.

You'll ruin your coat and your washing machine!
I've been wearing Barbours for nearly 30 years and never needed to do more than the odd dab to get a chunk of mud off and I walk my dog in all weathers.. what are you doing to get that filthy?!

I do occasionally rewax mine but it's a real faff.. last time it took hours and while my coat was a bit better by the end I'd mostly waterproofed my own hands, so I don't reccommend it Grin
