Summery dresses that are suitable for work?

TealOwl · 18/04/2023 20:33

Looking for suggestions please for nice summery dresses that are suitable for the office (dress code is fairly casual, allowed to wear jeans etc if we want) - but would want a dress to be not see-through or sheer, no strappy or sleeveless - short sleeves preferred. Budget in the Next/M&S/Zara sort of category, general high street prices.

I’m early 30s, fairly slim and almost 6ft so nothing too short either I guess which is hard to come by for me 😂

I like Silk Fred for finding dresses that can be worn dressed up or down. Brands like AX Paris or Girl in Mind.
I’ve just discovered an amazing Facebook site for buying and selling pre- loved Silk Fred brands as well. There are often items listed still with the tags on. Vinted has become my obsession and I keep finding River Island workwear so cheap. Definitely worth looking on those sites if you’d like bargains

I actually normally contribute to these sorts of threads. But you normally get shot down by at least one other catty mumsnet warrior who must have such a miserable life, that rather than scrolling by, they have to be catty/snobby/damn right rude to all and sundry about a) the op who has asked for help (we aren’t all style gurus!) and b) the people who are trying to help and get kicked in the proverbial titties when doing so! Anyway if it’s any help I do get a lot of work summer wear from Matalan and I’ve had a lot of compliments and it’s comfy! Yes I’m not kate moss in it but it’s FOR WORK not the catwalk. Pass me the wine

It might be too casual but I lived in this last summer and I'm 5ft 10

Dorothy Perkins tall range usually has good dresses too with decent length

Roomsharing · 21/04/2023 07:21

@NojudgementGem I love Silk Fred for finding dresses! What is the Facebook group called, please?

RampantIvy · 21/04/2023 07:32

A work colleague is 6ft and looked absolutely stunning in a Dancing Leopard Dove dress from Silk Fred.

I agree, so many dresses this year look like you are off to a prayer meeting in the USA Deep South in your home made dress circa 1960's.

I agree mountain warehouse have some great designs, also look at Sherpa for ethical clothing, I have a lovely dress from Patagonia (bought in Cotswold outdoors) also great for travelling as it doesn't crease. Fat face and seasalt often have nice dresses but haven't been myself this year as i bought in the sale at a local store that stocks last year's leftover stock for less

Yes I've also bought two of the Mountain Warehouse dresses ( had one last year) and they are very comfy

You do have to watch their pricing though

MinnieMountain · 24/04/2023 15:14

Most of my work summer dresses are second hand Boden tall. If they’re too expensive new, you could try one on so you get the sizing then buy from eBay.
Likewise Patagonia dresses. There’s a few empire line ones which means the waist doesn’t matter.

TheGander · 24/04/2023 17:09

That dress is lovely. If only black suited me…

Burpcloth · 24/04/2023 17:11

Uniqlo are great for work dresses. Lots of 100% cotton, generally fuss-free designs and their designs tend to err away from strappy. They've long done A-line midi dresses in a heavyweight cotton that I really like for work when it's really hot.

JenWillsiam · 24/04/2023 18:41

Oliver bonas is my go to.

I tend to buy Seasalt (usually in sale or end of line from eg Louise's Closet) ones like this: https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/top-terrace-cotton-voile-floral-dress or https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/chapelle-organic-cotton-midi-length-aline-dress.

Ihave tried the Mountain Warehouse ones and like them in principle and do own one - they are similar to but cheaper than Seasalt jersey dresses) but they aren't long enough for me I like to cover up my knees if I'm going without tights!

@LabradorsByTheSea

Cheers Labs. Your name conjours up goofy labs swimming in the sea, running with sticks in their mouths etc etc.

I was not the one that asked about the dresses but was lurking and am happy to notice that Hobbs now do up to a 20. Yahay!!

Seasalt have an eBay shop for their end of line stock and they have a tall range.

There are loads of dresses like this in the supermarkets at the moment I was particularly impressed with tescos offerings at the weekend and also Morrisons which is a place I have never thought of for this kind of thing
Might be worth a look

TealOwl · 25/04/2023 14:53

Thanks again everyone, loads of lovely suggestions. Especially like Tu actually!

I'm not sure if these deliver outside of Ireland but they have some dresses that I think would be lovely for work in summer https://www.carraigdonn.com/collections/short-sleeve-dresses

Can we ask how the neckline feels on that dress - is it more of a crew/round neck or a bit lower like a scoop neck ? I like the simplicity of it but I'm not good with higher necklines . Thanks

Kyse · 25/04/2023 16:50

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea I'm a 34K who hates high necks as I feel like they're choking me!
Pic might help. I have it in 3 colours now, it's totally cleavage covering but I don't feel it's too high
