How oversized is too oversized.

Bought this sweatshirt (for reference it is one size). DH says I look ridiculous. I see people on Insta looking really good with oversized sweatshirt and leggings. I’m 5’9 and size 10 and late 40s. Am I trying to be a teen?

Need to see a pic as it would depend on your figure.

GoodChat · 07/04/2023 17:16

I think that sweatshirt looks like it wouldn't really flatter anyone

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 07/04/2023 17:23

How do all these people look great in oversized sweats…

Given you are probably a similar size the model, I’d say it’s looks fine on you. Wearing things very fitted looks dated these days.

ASixPackAndTheRadio · 07/04/2023 17:25

It doesn’t look that big on the model so I’d imagine it’s fine on you. It’s a sweatshirt, hardly trying to be a teen.

cornflakegeneration · 07/04/2023 17:26

On the model that barely looks oversized tbh.

Generally male partners aren't really on the button with women's fashion.

Pleasepleasenomorecocomelon · 07/04/2023 17:26

I still wear sweatshirts as a size 8 that I wore at 30 weeks pregnant. I think your husband is probably just out of style, mine is the same.

Xrays · 07/04/2023 17:32

If you want to be influencer ish you need to have one that’s a size 20-24 if you’re a size 10, wear it with leggings and chunky cream socks that scrunch up round your ankles and then add mini ugg boots or even crocs. That’s what they’re all doing. And then throw a giant smart grey or cream wooden coat over the top….

Disclaimer - I am 42, a size 18 and if I did that I’d look like I just raided the local skip. But there you go… what do I know 😳😆

Scamm · 07/04/2023 17:33

I'm no expert but I think people look good in oversized stuff if they are thin to start with (by which I mean model thin/underweight/not average woman with a flat chest/very small breasts) because it tends to drape in an artistic way that highlights their thinness and angles.

I think oversized stuff on a normal person looks shapeless, baggy and unflattering as it tends to cling to the breasts and highlight them - it's even worse if you are heavier.

I know whereof I speak I wear a lot of oversized stuff because I want to hide some fat bits but I know it doesn't suit me.

This is what I mean - look at her shoulders and collar bones - it's all highighted by the oversizedness

and compare this but bear in mind even this is a model made to look as good as possible. real life looks no wear need approachign this but you can see round the breasts why it's an unflattering look

It’s … tame. Not properly oversized. Needs to be either cropped and wider, or huge and falling to mid-thigh. What you’ve got is a basic sweatshirt (nothing wrong with that) with extremely banal words printed on it.

I doubt you look ridiculous. (So you can ignore your domestic style expert.) But it’s hardly exciting enough to provoke any particular reaction.

How much was it?

IrishGothic · 07/04/2023 17:36

Are you sure it's the oversized thing he means when he says you look 'ridiculous'? That's the kind of thing that the naffer overseas visiting students wear in my undergraduate cohort, only with our university and/ city name on. Worn with unfashionable jeans and runners and waterproof jackets and backpacks. Not a great look even on the young.

Scamm · 07/04/2023 17:38

That's a fair point. It's a bit New York tourist naff to have just as a slogan the words new york in college style lettering.

highfidelity · 07/04/2023 17:38

It's a fine line between oversized and too big. If the top fits you in the same way as the model, then it's fine, but any larger/longer is too big.

GoodChat · 07/04/2023 17:39

To be fair OP if you're wearing it with leggings it needs to be more oversized, not less. It needs to cover your bum. Ones that do that tend to then be slightly elasticated at the bottom so they sit nicer rather than looking boxy.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 07/04/2023 21:26

Ok safe to say it’s going back 😳😬

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 07/04/2023 21:26

It was not expensive under £40

My issue with wearing oversized stuff is that it’s too drafty and I get cold. Apart from that if YOU like it, wear it!

Whattt44 · 07/04/2023 21:33

I'm a similar size as you op and looks like most of the sweat shirts that I wear.

Whattt44 · 07/04/2023 21:41

Have you seen Lady of the Manor on sm? She wears things like this and looks lovely.

How oversized is too oversized.
CountryCousin · 07/04/2023 22:08

How ‘lovely’? She looks like a woman smiling beside a mock baronial staircase. Her clothing is pretty much irrelevant - but curtain hair and dark glasses inside a building suggest she either doesn’t like her face much, or feels the need for artificial glamour in place of a personality.

Most adults who speak English have heard of New York, @JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome - you don’t need it emblazoned across your chest …

Scamm · 07/04/2023 22:17

Come off it @Whattt44 thats like a low rent footballers wife. Everything in that picture from the suspiciously anaemic dalmation crossed with an albino leopard synthetic rug on the floor to the chrome Elton John style mirror that looks like it was on sale at B&Q to the perculiarly angled 'give me a crotch gap because I've read that's what I should do' back leg. You can't seriously be holding that up as an example of good style.

Plus that's not an outsized top anyway.

@JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome

Ok safe to say it’s going back

Probably for the best

Scamm · 07/04/2023 22:19

@CountryCousin - cross post!

Partyandbullshit · 07/04/2023 22:22

These Instagram poses are soooo weird. They all look like they’ve for a wedgie, or are about to fart, or have a dicky hip Confused

lljkk · 07/04/2023 22:23

so ... over-sized stuff is in? OMG, that's so cool. It's been "my style" all my life. I started wearing my dad's clothes when I was a teen (he was 8-10" taller than me). Dad still hands me random items when he gets bored with them. I'm FINALLY STYLISH !!

Not that I care. Nor will I care when oversize ceases to be stylish.

Currently wearing cast offs from my son (6" taller than me).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/04/2023 22:26

I think it’s fine, OP, but bigger might be better. I have a few vintage sweatshirts from Depop that I wear with leggings for WFH - usually with chunky knit socks and Birkenstock clogs. I’m a 10/12 and buy men’s large or extra large, partly so I can fit layers under.
