Vinted - does no one own an iron?

GatherlyGal · 05/04/2023 16:48

DD has introduced me to the joys of Vinted and I’ve sold a few things that were taking up space.

Had a bit of a look at what’s for sale and I can’t understand why people present an expensive item (relatively) like a scrunched up rag on a wonky hanger?

I don’t iron everything by any means but are irons just not a thing any more?

Slight tangent but I find it a bit bizarre that we get thread after thread on here about the dreadful quality of high street clothing and yet we also get posters queueing up to tell us they don't take even the most basic care of their clothes.

Does ironing, or lack of, make a difference to the well-being of the clothes?”

would have thought in-ironed clothes last longer?

Floisme · 06/04/2023 09:59

How does not ironing something suggest you don't take care of it? If anything notapplying heat to garments is better for their longevity, not worse.
It suggests that you don't care how your clothes look. Someone who doesn't care how their clothes look is also unlikely, I suspect, to take any other care to make them last longer, e.g. washing them on the correct setting, even hanging them up properly so as to try and maintain the shape. As I have said, that's entirely up to you but it means I wouldn't risk buying clothes from you. Clearly lots of people will though so we're good.

Floisme · 06/04/2023 10:00

MrsSkylerWhite I have answered your question just above.

Floisme · 06/04/2023 10:03

Also what BusterGonad said.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 06/04/2023 10:04

All these people who say they don't even own an iron - I sometimes wonder what their homes look like.

What do you do with new bedding or curtains? These ALWAYS come with terrible packing creases that no washer or dryer can remove. I hate ironing so I've tried. They don't drop out either IME
I HAVE to iron them

Clothes bought online often have the same issue

You just leave these creases in?

This is partly why I don't do Vinted, Ebay etc. I'm not handing over my money to anyone who takes so little care of their clothes they can't even be bothered ironing them when they put them up for sale.

My sentiments too, I was completely put off by the scruffy appearance of many of the clothes, some even looked washed and grubby.
Not for me.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 06/04/2023 10:04

Unwashed

Floisme · 06/04/2023 10:06

Oh my home is a tip! But if I wanted someone to buy it, I'd clean up.

EntreMummy · 06/04/2023 10:51

Clothes actually do last much better and longer if they are regularly ironed after laundering.

same for bedsheets, tea towels, linens etc.

and yes - cheap clothes last much better when ironed and looked after properly too.

Pigtailsandall · 06/04/2023 10:56

Gah I have a million things I'd rather do than iron! I cant imagine bringing out a dress from storage to sell it, spend ages ironing for a photo for the sake of a fiver and then putting it back to storage to crease again.

I sell my stuff on vinted, but less for the money, more for environmental reasons. It still sells, even with a few creases. Not that I buy stuff that creases anyway if I can avoid it

My house is pretty clean.

I take care of my clothes, they're all washed on the right setting and I probably take more care hanging them because I'm not ironing them
They come straight out the wash, a good shake (depending on the item!) and then hung properly to dry

Do they?

Nobody is talking about waging btw, just ironing. How does ironing extend the life span of fabrics?

Floisme · 06/04/2023 11:00

In that case Maple2023 then I suggest you're missing a trick if you don't iron them before you put them on Vinted as people like me won't buy them.

Floisme · 06/04/2023 11:09

And now I must extricate myself from this thread as in all fairness, I don't use Vinted anyway! But frankly, whenever I wonder if I should give it a go, this is the kind of thread that confirms I'm not missing much. I buy second hand a lot but only if I've seen it first, because sadly I don't trust most people to take enough care of their clothes

MistyGreenAndBlue · 06/04/2023 11:40

Sorry wasn't trying to suggest that people who don't iron also don't clean their house 😂
Just that I cant imagine hanging curtains or putting on new bedding with huge pressed in creases in them from being packed up tight.

It must look dreadful. Or is there some non ironing trick to this that I've somehow missed?

I have never put new bedding in without washing it, neither have I ever ironed bedding after washing it.

I do iron new curtains.

Neither of these make my house look less scruffy though. It is a disorganised mess throughout.

Pigtailsandall · 06/04/2023 11:58

I remember my grandmother ironing bed sheets before putting them on. Tbh she didn't have a job though so she had tons of time to iron. I personally would never put new sheets on without washing them - and how would you iron fitted sheets anyway? Linen sheets come out naturally crumpled in a lovely, bed-inviting way.

I don't buy creased clothes from vinted. To me it shows they need regular ironing which I'm not prepared to do. But I also don't see the point in ironing something for sales purposes as anyone buying second hand clothing would certainly wash it first anyway?

liveforsummer · 06/04/2023 12:01

This! For those of you who don’t iron, how do you manage to keep clean clothes from looking a creased mess? I hate ironing with a passion, but I wouldn’t go out to work or socialise wearing clothes that are creased.

I shake things out and hang well, or tumble dry and lay out flat to put away rather than just cramming in to a basket. I don't wear shirts and DD's school ones are the non iron variety. I neither iron nor have creased clothes. I do have an iron, couldn't tell you off the top of my head where it is but sure I could find it easily enough. Couldn't tell you when I last used it - definitely not within the last 5 years though.

Cyclingmummy1 · 06/04/2023 08:20

I iron pretty much everything anyway and hang my vinted items on wooden hangers to photograph them. I also wrap sales in tissue and spray with linen spray. It's just the way I am.

Ooh you were doing well til you said linen spray - much of mumsnet hates any scented sprays 😆

Surely ironing over time will wear clothes out quicker? Even if it's only marginal. It certainly wouldn't make them last longer so not sure what your point is

I bought a Phase Eight jumper from ebay and It came in tissue and smelt lovely. It really made me feel like I had treated myself to something special. I gave the seller 5 stars.

I've found this information on ironing.
"Ironing your Clothes Makes Them Last Longer

Steam ironing clothes helps fabrics soften and return to their original state. Some fabrics stretch over time but ironing your clothes will help them to maintain their original state, making them last longer."

helebard · 06/04/2023 13:03

Agreed.

liveforsummer · 06/04/2023 13:21

@BusterGonad oh well you learn something new everyday. Not going to convince me to start ironing though 😆
