Vinted - does no one own an iron?

GatherlyGal · 05/04/2023 16:48

DD has introduced me to the joys of Vinted and I’ve sold a few things that were taking up space.

Had a bit of a look at what’s for sale and I can’t understand why people present an expensive item (relatively) like a scrunched up rag on a wonky hanger?

I don’t iron everything by any means but are irons just not a thing any more?

Yeah, in my pretty vast experience in buying off eBay, I want something that looks like it's been cared for. I looked at Vinted once and backed away for the very reason you raise OP

I don't understand the MN love for vinted. I've looked at it a couple of times and everything just looked cheap, nasty, badly presented and poorly indexed.

eBay on the other hand is usually as good as any commercial online retailer. The search facility is much more tailored and accurate.

I own an iron but don’t use it. I sell a lot of stuff on Vinted. It’s all new with tags, and it’s all been hanging in my wardrobe. Some items look creased. I did toy with the idea of buying a steamer but tbh, it’s an additional expense and I’m there to make money. My stuff sells well regardless. Apart from anything else, by the time it’s been posted and delivered, it’d just be crumpled again.

Why are you selling new clothes still with the tags? Do you buy and never wear clothes? Why?

TimeForMeToF1y · 05/04/2023 20:50

I think in general uncreased clothes look better on people than crumpled ones, yes, I don't think that makes me superior, it's an aesthetic view

It's just odd when posters fall over themselves to make it clear they don't have an iron, there are examples of it above

I hate ironing as much as the next person but unless one excludes everything made of cotton, linen, silk, viscose or tencel I'm struggling to see how it's possible to avoid ironing.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 06/04/2023 05:05

I always iron and hang mine before photographing. Im not an avid ironer at all but think that the items look better ironed and hung, so more likely to sell.
This comes from a woman who's mum still berates them (at53) as I didn't iron my children's vests and babygroes.
My mum still irons bed sheets and tea towels .....at 5am!! Yes, she's lovely but bonkers (and bed linen must be changed every saturday, else you'll catch leprosy .... and ready meals are made by the devil)

GatherlyGal · 06/04/2023 08:12

Ok so it’s not just me that finds it odd. I am no lover of ironing - work shirts and the occasional pillowcase BUT if I’m selling something I make it look nice because it must surely improve the chances of a sale.

Also intrigued by @BotherThat having a load of new clothes you don’t actually want!

I also much prefer seeing the item on an actual person or a mannequin at least than just on a hanger!

Not everyone owns a mannequin.
I also only sell things that are a bit too small, so would not look great on me...

Cyclingmummy1 · 06/04/2023 08:20

I iron pretty much everything anyway and hang my vinted items on wooden hangers to photograph them. I also wrap sales in tissue and spray with linen spray. It's just the way I am.

JamonEverybody · 06/04/2023 08:34

I don't own an iron.

Gloriousgardener11 · 06/04/2023 08:44

Funnily enough my youngest DD was sorting some things out to sell on Vinted and as she was photographing them I mentioned that some of the items were creased.
I suggested she gave them a quick iron to which she just rolled her eyes!
Anyway after a few days of zero interest, out came the iron and she uploaded new photos.
Guess what ? They sold !

Gufo · 06/04/2023 08:53

I ironed a silk blouse before listing it - and burnt it! It went in the rag bag! Still fummin' (like the iron).

lljkk · 06/04/2023 09:01

why people present an expensive item (relatively) like a scrunched up rag on a wonky hanger?

How expensive?

I sell a lot of clothes for charity. Like 5 bundles a week, so 10-12 unique items. I can't face ironing them. They go for like £2 each though (+ postage). I'd iron if I could get £20 each.

BotherThat · 06/04/2023 09:06

For those asking, my ADHD periodically manifests itself in compulsive shopping. Then I forget to return stuff. It’s a real problem. I was horrified at myself when I cleared out a wardrobe recently
at just how much stuff I have that I’d forgotten I’d bought.

I also yo-yo diet, so have a tendency to horde clothes because I think it’ll probably
fit at some point. This inevitably turns out to be more bullshit I tell myself.

At least this way I can make some of my money back. Which I manage to do without ironing anything, thankfully.

BringMeTea · 06/04/2023 09:12

Agree with you OP. I won't buy anything that looks a mess or has been photographed on the floor or has been modelled. I have bought a cheap steamer for clothes I am selling on vinted.

ShesThunderstorms · 06/04/2023 09:26

I don't own an iron. It wouldn't bother me if something was a bit creased in Vinted pictures, as if I bought something, it would go straight in the wash when it arrived anyway. If I loved something and it was a good price, creases wouldn't put me off at all.

easterbunnysbum · 06/04/2023 09:27

I don't own an iron, have never owned and iron, never intend to own an iron, and have never ironed a piece of clothing.

Floisme · 06/04/2023 09:30

Slight tangent but I find it a bit bizarre that we get thread after thread on here about the dreadful quality of high street clothing and yet we also get posters queueing up to tell us they don't take even the most basic care of their clothes.

ThursdayLastWeek · 06/04/2023 09:33

One of reasons I’ll sell a thing is because it needs ironing [gtin]

Oh, I think I have found my identical twin Blush

I don't sell anymore but back in the day (like 18 years ago) I would buy and sell all the time on eBay. It was a decent place back then.

Ironing? Not really.

Does ironing, or lack of, make a difference to the well-being of the clothes?

Ooh no I hate it when it's on someone! Really puts me off!
I hate when it's not even on a hanger just laid flat on the floor though

But agree with other posters the whole point of vinted is to sell things easily and cheaply - if you're having a big clear out then you don't want to be spending an hour or two ironing everything and taking multiple perfect photos etc.

RichardHeed · 06/04/2023 09:48

I sell my dds clothes for £1 an item. Am I fuck digging the iron out for that. It’s also not worth my time for other things either tbh, if things are priced correctly they will sell 🤷🏻‍♀️

Floisme · 06/04/2023 09:49

It suggests that you're not interested in taking care of them, which is entirely up to you but it means they probably won't last as well - I often find the cheaper the garment, the more careful handling it needs.

How does not ironing something suggest you don't take care of it? If anything not applying heat to garments is better for their longevity, not worse.

mydogisthebest · 06/04/2023 09:52

Well so many people today proudly say they never iron anything (and boy does it usually show).

I hate ironing but I still do it. DH always says not to bother with his work clothes (he is a plumber) but no way is he going out with a creased T shirt or sweatshirt on.

I agree. A cheap t shirt looks so much better after an iron. Also if you iron your clothes you're are (ime) more likely to notice loose threads, buttons hanging off and general things that need sorting. It's basic care, a bit of pride in the garment itself. I'm no fan of ironing but over the past 6 months I've been doing it a lot more. Clothes hang better after.
