bikinis at 50

We have booked a summer holiday in Mallorca, first time abroad since covid struck. I ordered a new bikini as a treat and I think I look terrible in it! The bikini itself is fine - nice quality fabric and a good fit, but I am not as toned or young as I was and I'm wondering if there is a sell by date on wearing bikinis.

Hoppinggreen · 27/03/2023 17:38

Oh no, you have to throw them all away the day after your 49th Birthday
Wear what you feel happy in OP

Tuters · 27/03/2023 17:42

Wear it, I met a lady in her 80's with a life lived body in the tiniest bikini who changed my whole perspective about giving a damn!

AutumnNymph · 27/03/2023 17:42

The sell by date is when YOU stop wanting to wear one.

I am 43 and off to Greece next week. I am overweight and the heaviest I have been in many years and far from toned. I shall be wearing my bikini and soaking in the sun.

Judgers gonna judge and the way I see it if someone is spending their holiday time judging others rather than enjoying the weather and view, their loss.

I'm 56 and just bought two new bikinis for my trip to Spain next month. One is asymmetric, I love it. I have been going to the gym a bit extra to try to keep the tummy in check but to be honest, I'm going there to sunbathe, eat, drink and be merry and I don't care what folk think of me!

ZoeyBartlett · 27/03/2023 17:43

Who cares on holiday? You are never going to see those people again. Nearly 60 and proud bikini wearer here!!

Snorklette · 27/03/2023 17:46

I am 53.. bloody love getting my bikini on! Do it! (I am also a bit wobbly with a stomach that resembles an uncooked focaccia, and I really do not give a feck 😂). Love the sun and sea on my chubby bits. 😁

KohlaParasaurus · 27/03/2023 17:48

If the bikini's a nice fit, you look fine. If you don't look fine, you just haven't found the right bikini.

Houseyvibe · 27/03/2023 17:50

I’m 49 and still wear a bikini, no plans to stop. I’m in good shape and I feel good in it so that’s the main thing. I will say that it’s worth investing in good bikinis. You can’t imagine how a little pair of knickers and a bit of material up top could possibly justify spending lots of money on but I’m a total convert, they look so much better than high street ones. I buy on the Outnet where they’re ridiculously reduced and really not expensive at all

THisbackwithavengeance · 27/03/2023 17:51

I wore one on my cruise last year, I'm in my 50s and at the time of the holiday was a size 18.

I figured no one knew me anyway and tbh there were loads of women who were older and fatter in far skimpier bikinis Americans.

AmandaHoldensLips · 27/03/2023 17:52

To hell with everybody else! Get your body out and enjoy it! I bloody well do and I'm ten years older than you with a body that wouldn't look out of place in a donut factory.

Mxflamingnoravera · 27/03/2023 17:54

I swim in a swimsuit, I sunbathe in a bikini. I'm 61.

StephanieSuperpowers · 27/03/2023 17:54

No age limit. Once you get to the beach you'll see. We're so used to only seeing bikinis on models but people who like in warmer climates and are always at the beach wear them, all sizes, shapes and ages. You'll be there five minutes and you'll realise that everyone is just the same, all different.

Hadalifeonce · 27/03/2023 17:54

I am 65 and still wear a bikini. I did stop when I got to about 50, then realised that loads of women wear them without a 2nd thought, so got them out again.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 27/03/2023 17:55

I wore one at 49 and size 28.
I wear one very proudly at 53 and size 14 with a LOT of loose and wrinkly skin.

Newusernameaug · 27/03/2023 17:57

Thing is…… a body is a body and you’re the shape and size you are - a swimsuit versus a bikini is not going to change that!!

wear whatever YOU want and whatever makes YOU feel good and sod anyone else!

Schmutter · 27/03/2023 17:57

Wear what you feel happy in OP.

I went on holiday a couple of weeks ago. I’m 51 and for the first time ever, I wore one pieces every day rather than bikinis. I am really slim, but felt self conscious that my belly is not that toned. I did think maybe I’m too old, but that’s my insecurities and on reflection, I was being daft. (Having said that, the only women I saw in bikinis were young and nubile. 😂)

heatdeath · 27/03/2023 17:58

the older I get the more comfortable I am wearing a bikini!

RashOfBees · 27/03/2023 18:03

Even if I thought people ‘should’ dress in a way that is easy on the eye for others, and I don’t, I’ve never understood why bikinis are meant to be the preserve of the young and/or beautiful. As a typical pear shape and short, I’ve always found swimsuits highly unflattering and it’s not like they hide very much.

Where we go on holiday every year in Italy there are always plenty of women 70+ on the beach, and most if not all wear bikinis. Because bikinis are comfortable and easy to wear.

Ratatouille1 · 27/03/2023 18:03

I think they can be more flattering than a one piece, I prefer a slightly more coverage on the bottom than I went for when I was 20 but I will wear a bikini for ever. I love open water swimming, so much easier to change in and out of a two piece. On a sunny day I will often stay in a bikini top after swimming with shorts and a cover up of some kind. A wet clingy costume on your belly just isn't as nice.

StarlightLady · 27/03/2023 18:11

I'm in my 40s and still go topless on beaches when away, although with high waisted bottoms. It is not a competition and everyone ages.

I love swimming and the last thing I want when I get out the sea is a clingy wet one piece.

Schmutter · 27/03/2023 18:13

I’m just thinking about the hundreds of times I went for a wee on holiday (it was boozy!), and how much easier it would’ve been in a bikini!

Hoppinggreen · 27/03/2023 18:15

heatdeath · 27/03/2023 17:58

the older I get the more comfortable I am wearing a bikini!

So true
hitting 50 and giving no fucks is very liberating

MonkeyMindAllOverAround · 27/03/2023 18:16

My SIL looks great in them and she is approaching 60 but then she is very toned and very slim. I went past the bikini sell by date in my mid 40s.

The important thing is that whatever you are wearing makes you feel comfortable, confident and happy with yourself. If it doesn’t make you feel like that, find something that will 🙂

FordCreek · 27/03/2023 18:17

Yes you cannot possibly buy a bikini at 50 years old! Also did you know that shops get fined if they sell them to anyone of that age and above?

Frenchfancy · 27/03/2023 18:18

European beaches are full of women of all ages and sizes in bikinis.

I look for more support and coverage in mine than I did at 20 but do not intend to start wearing a one piece on the beach I'm 51)
