DCs 18th party - 52, barely 5 foot and fat. What would you wear if you were me?

I'd like a new outfit for my DCs 18th in 3 weeks. I'm a size 16, slightly smaller on the shoulders and bust but have a belly, hips and bum and chunky legs which swell up.

For work I seem to have evolved a uniform of midi (they're often maxi on me) or on the knee dresses with opaque black tights and ankle boots. Casual is more of the same or dog walking clothes. I really need to get more casual clothes too but just can't seem to find anything I like enough to buy. It doesn't help that I hate clothes shopping. If I need new tights I'll go straight to the tights and not look at anything else as an example of my shopping style. The thought of traipsing around the shops looking for a sophisticated party outfit fills me with dread. Can any of you suggest what may look good on me please?

Monsoon have some lovely clothes .I am barely 5ft and a bit chunky as well.Their "midi " dress is usually about right for me .OW I tend to live in black trousers and a smart top .Often go for darker colours as a bit more flattering for us slightly larger girls!

The DP dress is lovely @Septemberbeginnings

Friendofdennis · 14/04/2023 15:01

I love the DP dress

Thanks everyone. I'll be wearing heeled black ankle boots (not that anyone will be able to see them) and have a hair appointment already booked. I don't like manicures unfortunately even though I'd love to have glamorous nails on the night.

you look great!
I know you don’t like manicures but maybe you could get your DD to do your nails for you? Might be a nice bonding thing the morning of the party?

Rainbow1901 · 14/04/2023 15:12

I would choose your normal style of outfit but glammed up with some glittery bits either in the material or accessories so it looks a little dressier than usual.

eyerollwiththepunches · 14/04/2023 15:21

That dress looks fab on you. Enjoy your celebration.

TaggieOHara · 14/04/2023 15:24

A bit taller than you but also around a 16. I really like landsend dresses. They are cut very flatteringly and don’t crease (I don’t iron!)

I have this https://www.landsend.co.uk/s/LandsEndUK/Womens_Cap_Sleeve_Twist_Front_Fit_and_Flare_Dress/pp/P_42113.html

I wear it with a necklace and quite high shoes

@Septemberbeginnings I think a gorgeous bardot top ( off the shoulder) or a one shoulder top tucked into wide leg trousers with a pair of heels ,possibly platform ( easier to walk in than a very high heel)
All black with some chunky gold jewelry would look lovely and modern.

It will mean that you can highlight all the parts of you that you fee confident amd flatter the parts you not so confident with x

I think this is a great suggestion. Off the shoulder or one shoulder top, platform heels whatever height you’re comfortable with, and either the trousers that flatter you or a long black skirt. Enjoy your son’s party!

It fits!! First time I've fitted in a 12 for at least a decade! Now I'm worrying it's too dressy 😬

Please ignore the washing pile behind me.

Just saw your updates. That dress is FANTASTIC. I love it and it looks absolutely great on you. Looks like you’re all set!

GreenHorses · 14/04/2023 15:33

The DP dress looks great, not too dressy. Your description of yourself was harsh! Have a great time.

MysteryBelle · 14/04/2023 15:35

Agree with pp who said your description of yourself was too harsh. You have a nice figure, Op! Your legs look long in that dress, you look much taller than 5’0” and you do not look fat!!

Jayneisagirlsname · 14/04/2023 15:39

The starry dress looks lovely on you! Have a great time x

Seenoevil33 · 14/04/2023 15:43

Dress looks lovely - go with that

QOD · 14/04/2023 15:45

i am you but with whopping knockers - i wear same lengt dresses as you, wither with under bust fitting but then flare out OR i actually look ok in dungaree style - i have no discernible waist

FancyFanny · 14/04/2023 15:50

OP, the dress Dorothy Perkins dress looks lovely. From your description of yourself I couldn't think of anything that would look good as you sounded as if you were huge and round- and you're not!

Septemberbeginnings · 14/04/2023 16:07

Thanks to everyone who's commented that I don't look as bad as described. It's definitely the dress and probably the fact that I took the photo from the front. In most photos I do actually look really round 😂@MysteryBelle I wish! I don't even measure quite 5'.

There've been some brilliant suggestions on this thread and some new websites for me to browse.

How formally dressed will the guests be?

PollyAmour · 14/04/2023 16:31

I love the dress!! It's perfect for an 18th, glamorous but not over the top. Have a wonderful time. You will look beautiful.

ScottishHolidays · 14/04/2023 16:32

Looks amazing!! Enjoy

SuperGinger · 14/04/2023 16:51

I would try one hundred stars dresses google them with a pair of esska shoes some are quite closed

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 14/04/2023 17:28

@Septemberbeginnings I love that dress on you.
You look amazing. 😻
If you want sparkly nails without too much "fuss" how about a sparkly top coat nail varnish? Not too much, but enough iyswim.
Just remember to have a lovely evening. 🎂

Idontgiveashitanymore · 14/04/2023 17:35

PurplePeach62 · 27/03/2023 00:25

I'd suggest something like this with comfortable small heeled ankle boots and coated (fake leather) black leggings?
I'm a similar shape to you and this dress covers a multitude of wobbly bits

I’d wear this it’s lovely

Change2banon · 14/04/2023 17:43

OP you look beautiful! I hope you feel internally as good as you look externally ☺️☺️
