DCs 18th party - 52, barely 5 foot and fat. What would you wear if you were me?

I'd like a new outfit for my DCs 18th in 3 weeks. I'm a size 16, slightly smaller on the shoulders and bust but have a belly, hips and bum and chunky legs which swell up.

For work I seem to have evolved a uniform of midi (they're often maxi on me) or on the knee dresses with opaque black tights and ankle boots. Casual is more of the same or dog walking clothes. I really need to get more casual clothes too but just can't seem to find anything I like enough to buy. It doesn't help that I hate clothes shopping. If I need new tights I'll go straight to the tights and not look at anything else as an example of my shopping style. The thought of traipsing around the shops looking for a sophisticated party outfit fills me with dread. Can any of you suggest what may look good on me please?

Next clearance have lots in size 16. The red velvet on the left maybe?

It fits!! First time I've fitted in a 12 for at least a decade! Now I'm worrying it's too dressy 😬

Please ignore the washing pile behind me.

It's lovely! You'll have a great time.
Personally, I'd go for big earrings and killer shoes/boots too.

Bobbybobbins · 13/04/2023 14:08

Looks great OP

InspiredToBoot · 13/04/2023 15:11

The DP dress looks good!!

CuriousMama · 13/04/2023 15:35

Definitely not too dressy. You probably feel that if you don't dress up much? Looks fabulous 😍

GetYourActTogether1 · 13/04/2023 15:40

I’d wear a midi dress but a posher one than your normal one or culottes and a nice top and necklace. I’m 54.

AchillesElbow · 13/04/2023 15:44

You look lovely. Your description of yourself was way too harsh.

spring78 · 13/04/2023 15:52

It looks perfect!

Septemberbeginnings · 13/04/2023 16:49

@CuriousMama It doesn't show in the photo but the dress has a bit of sparkle to it. I think that's why I'm thinking it's a bit too dressy.

@AchillesElbow If I posted a normal photo of myself you probably would agree with my original description 😂

I think that dress looks really pretty on you. It is a party, so sparkle is good! Don't overthink yourself out of liking it.

Chewbecca · 13/04/2023 18:32

Looks like it fits you well and is ideal for a party. Maybe book a hair cut / blow dry and a manicure to finish it off.

Tina221 · 13/04/2023 18:40

The dress looks really great on you, it’s a lovely party dress. Maybe kitten heels may be more comfortable to you to wear instead of flats.

Septemberbeginnings · 13/04/2023 20:11

Thanks everyone. I'll be wearing heeled black ankle boots (not that anyone will be able to see them) and have a hair appointment already booked. I don't like manicures unfortunately even though I'd love to have glamorous nails on the night.

Good choice

Augend23 · 13/04/2023 21:36

Looks great OP, and a dress that supports the wearing of comfy footwear is a double winner.

Agree with the above posters. Find yourself some dark wide legged tailored trousers. High waisted and wear with a more fitted top with perhaps a boat neckline or off the shoulder to balance your wider bottom half. Statement earrings and sleek hair. Boots or platforms for shoes to give you the illusion of height and balance your silhouette. Could pair with a blazer nipped in at the waist or cropped jacket. Also fabric is important when planning event dressing. Go for the thickest quality fabric you can afford as it makes all the difference in how it drapes on the body and is much more flattering on a fuller figure.

I want you to take me clothes shopping!

Sugargliderwombat · 14/04/2023 10:56

I love culottes ! I have some nice silky wide leg ones from zara that are easily dressed up with a nice top.

LarkLane · 14/04/2023 11:17

Also the same shape and size as the OP. You will look great OP!
What great advice, I just wanted to post and say thank you to some great women from a lurker. Always fantastic support on here.

ididntwanttodoit · 14/04/2023 11:23

Wear what you usually wear, but in a more upmarket or glamorous version. Put you hair up, wear earrings and lip, and you're good to go!

Hazelnuttella · 14/04/2023 11:27

Bit late to the party on this one but just wanted to say the dress looks lovely on you. Enjoy the party.

JFDIYOLO · 14/04/2023 12:45

Just spotted the picture that looks really nice!

Mew2 · 14/04/2023 12:50

I would agree a dress- if things are often too long try popsy- they do free alterations to length and sleeves when ordering... I love their dresses!! (They also manufacture in the UK)
