Where do you buy clothes that she actually normal?!

I'm 32, size 16, starting right from scratch with my wardrobe as I own virtually nothing other than a couple of awful pairs of leggings and baggy t-shirts. Seriously I need HELP.

I need to start all the way at the beginning and figure out my wardrobe. I'm a SAHM abd dont go anywhere posh so need casual clothes mostly. Jeans, tops, day dresses, cardigans, jumpers, etc

I've not shopped in years. But I've just had a browse today and I'm honestly lost. New Look - I used to shop a lot in here but everything appears to be aimed at pantomime dames and hookers. Genuinly why its all.so garish and weird?! I don't even see teenagers wearing that stuff so who's buying it.

I'm 32 so hardly old!!! But I feel ancient looking at the clothes available. Next...seems mostly geared towards women working in an office or older women.

Where do people shop for nice, wearable day to day clothing? Flattering clothes for average bodies? And I don't want to spend a fortune either if possible because like I say, I'm just a SAHM.

I probably need a couple pairs of "mom" jeans - not skinny, a couple longish Cardigans that come below the bum. Tops - again longish and pretty basic...stripes, floral etc but not frumpy and old looking. I want pretty styles for a 30 something year old. So like...sensible but still young?! Don't want to look like my mother.

I know I'm a basic bitch and probably very dull but I just need basics to start me off as I have nothing.

Thank you!

White Stuff.
I lost six stone and that's where I started. I've branched out since but those first few White Stuff dresses made me feel great.
I'm 66 and size 16

(I know you said not skinny but they're just so comfy I had to share)

usernother · 22/03/2023 16:25

Sainsburys

JustFrustrated · 22/03/2023 16:25

Primark hits the mark for me.

fyn · 22/03/2023 16:30

I am a similar age to you and about the same clothes size. I only wear dresses because I am lazy and they require absolutely no thought to look relatively put together! I really like dresses from Nobody’s Child, the Ghost x M&S collaboration, ASOS, Somerset by Temperley from John Lewis and Sainsburys! I always look on vinted before buying new as well! I currently go for wrap or smocked top ones because I’m breastfeeding and usually midi length so I don’t flash anyone chasing the toddler!

Fat Face and White Stuff is where I would go for that sort of thing. I have also just bought some nice basics from M&S and I’ve also been advised to try Uniqlo.

Icedlatteplease · 22/03/2023 16:39

Trousers from next and marks and Spencer

Tops from H&M

Dresses and coats from charity shops.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 22/03/2023 16:40

long tops called tunics

MrsMitford3 · 22/03/2023 16:42

Hush
Uniglo
Sainsburys

JaneFondue · 22/03/2023 16:44

I really like M and S these days for jeans and trousers. Tops are a lot more challenging for me because everything is poofy and floral. But Uniqlo and Rapanui do good basic tee-shirts.

Eranzer · 22/03/2023 16:45

Most of my day to day casual stuff is H&M

Icedlatteplease · 22/03/2023 16:48

Primark for cheap ass tops for wearing as a layer under jumpers and on casual days (and yes my £2-3 tops wash and wear day in day out no issues)

NHStyptypey · 22/03/2023 16:49

Actually M&S is very nice at the moment. I'm in my 30s and love it. Just wish I could afford it x

Wellillsayitifnoonelsewill · 22/03/2023 16:51

I used to love Eden jeggings from Dorothy Perkins. 😭😭😭 if you can find a soft jegging in black that fit well they are excellent wardrobe staples as they dress up with pretty tops and heels and dress down with trainers/hoodies/T-shirts or even in between (boots biker jacket and band tees are my going out uniform) as well as being ridiculously comfy and flattering for all body shapes xx

sarahb083 · 22/03/2023 16:52

Uniqlo
M&S
Vinted for Sweaty Betty (new) leggings

yogaretreat · 22/03/2023 16:52

H&M and Asos for general stuff
Actually m&s do okay jeans
Lucy and Yak do decent cargo type pants which are good for every day
Vero moda do nice jumpers
Uniquo for all basics like tshirts. I live in their long sleeve basic black tops with jeans. They wash really well.
I like Silk Fred for every day dresses.

Apologies not meaning to be rude but I'm 33 and would never in a million years shop at white stuff.

coffeetofunction · 22/03/2023 16:54

Totally depends on your style and what you feel comfortable in. I'm 38 and I love h&m. I don't dress my age though, more like 25 but it makes me feel comfortable and people often tell me how stylish I am. I love jeans, big baggy jumpers, oversized dresses and coats. Often wear Dr martens or converse. Try making yourself a Pinterest board so you can have an idea of what you would like to wear

Ineedwinenow · 22/03/2023 16:55

I live in wide leg jeans from M&S and thermal leggings when I walk the dog and a mix of teeshirts, basic long sleeve teeshirts and jumpers!

Also it’s worth remembering start with a good fitting bra and then work your way up to teeshirts and jumpers! A good bra makes your posture better which in turn makes clothes look better!

Yeah I've been thinking similarly about marks recently. The stores are so uninspiring but I could walk in try on 6 pairs of work trousers and walk out with 2 that were reasonable in price, comfort and appearance. DD(17) did similarly with a pair of smart trousers and college friendly trousers. Which is really an important part of what next should be

Op says she's a sahm, so if there are toddlers involved I find I can't wear black jeggings because I spend so long kneeling on the floor that the knees go white really quickly! Shame because as you say they are easy to style.

I like sainsburys for tops and asos for jeans.
