Where do you buy clothes that she actually normal?!

I'm 32, size 16, starting right from scratch with my wardrobe as I own virtually nothing other than a couple of awful pairs of leggings and baggy t-shirts. Seriously I need HELP.

I need to start all the way at the beginning and figure out my wardrobe. I'm a SAHM abd dont go anywhere posh so need casual clothes mostly. Jeans, tops, day dresses, cardigans, jumpers, etc

I've not shopped in years. But I've just had a browse today and I'm honestly lost. New Look - I used to shop a lot in here but everything appears to be aimed at pantomime dames and hookers. Genuinly why its all.so garish and weird?! I don't even see teenagers wearing that stuff so who's buying it.

I'm 32 so hardly old!!! But I feel ancient looking at the clothes available. Next...seems mostly geared towards women working in an office or older women.

Where do people shop for nice, wearable day to day clothing? Flattering clothes for average bodies? And I don't want to spend a fortune either if possible because like I say, I'm just a SAHM.

I probably need a couple pairs of "mom" jeans - not skinny, a couple longish Cardigans that come below the bum. Tops - again longish and pretty basic...stripes, floral etc but not frumpy and old looking. I want pretty styles for a 30 something year old. So like...sensible but still young?! Don't want to look like my mother.

I know I'm a basic bitch and probably very dull but I just need basics to start me off as I have nothing.

Thank you!

OP is 32. She was in her early teens when leggings+tunic was in style! But long-ish plaid shirts have come back around and those with leggings or black skinnies with a good bit of stretch, and docs or similar is definitely a look that is both "in" and also do-able as a mum-of-small-child in her early 30's. And is in effect the same as leggings+tunic, really, just more on trend.

Hongkongsuey · 24/03/2023 14:15

WhiteStuff and Fat Face for a 32 year old?🤣 Maybe her mum. Look at Uniqlo, &OtherStories, Zara can still surprise, M&S sometimes. Look on Vinted for All Saints, Barbour check shirts and leggings is a look favoured by my daughters. They use ASOS a lot too.

Sorryyoufeelthatway · 24/03/2023 15:55

Asos, &otherstories, H&M, supermarkets, All Saints

DuchessOfSausage · 24/03/2023 16:38

@Hongkongsuey , my DM wears Uniqlo, M&S and FatFace and is nearly 80.

TheChosenTwo · 24/03/2023 17:56

My god I had to ask dh to stop buying me things from fat face and white stuff when I was about 30, it was like he deliberately went in there to choose the frumpiest outfit he could find! It was all
washed out shapeless faded pastel colours. He thought he was being practical, everything was returned every time.
I’m now 38 and still wouldn’t consider shopping there based on past experience 😂 I’m not saying you can’t find nice things in there but he never chose me any of it!!
I tend to look at nobody’s child (dresses), & other stories for shirts and some knitwear basics, Oliver Bonas and Ted baker too. I usually go for neutral colours of staple items though, nothing extravagant and dressy. I’m quite a simple dresser.
More often than not though you’ll find me in gym gear!

Tallie27 · 24/03/2023 20:52

I'm 30, I wear leggings with oversize tshirts or sweatshirts and converse/vans/docs. Would never shop in fat face or white stuff as both seem too old. H&m is my go to for basics.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/03/2023 14:52

Superdry do great check shirts which you could wear open with a white T shirt underneath with stretchy black Jeggings/ jeans?

RosesAndHellebores · 25/03/2023 15:08

I'm double the op's age and hear the comments about White Stuff being too old but they do some really good plain knits, occasional plain casual trousers and good, structured jeggings.

I'd add M&S for jeans/trousers, Seasalt for tops, Hush/Whistles for occasions and the occasional jacket, coat, etc.

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/03/2023 15:26

I've had some
Success with Stitch Fix recently. Normally keep a couple of things from each box.

Ticktockwoof · 26/03/2023 08:33

John Lewis just because they have everything from lots of different labels. It’s not all expensive like Hush, the Kin stuff is really good and there’s always sale stuff. Lookiero and Stitch Fix - I’ve had loads of success with them in the past although I do find they don’t really listen to my style comments anymore, and send me things I’ve deliberately asked not to have.

heaveho · 26/03/2023 08:36

My friends are having a lot of success with Shein. I’m not sure that’s it’s an ethical way of buying clothes so I’ve not joined the bandwagon. But my friends are raving about the price and quality & they do have some stylish items

Purpl · 26/03/2023 09:07

INeedABrewPlease · 26/03/2023 09:24

When I was stuck in a clothes rut, I looked at YouTube. So many people of different ages and body shapes posting clothes hauls from different high street brands. Try searching clothes hauls and you could add age and/or brand into the search. I find them really helpful for ideas and have bought many things that I really love because of watching these videos.

RudsyFarmer · 26/03/2023 09:25

Pantomime Dane’s and hookers 🤣🤣

RudsyFarmer · 26/03/2023 09:26

dames 😬

Purpl · 26/03/2023 09:32

Also consider jumpsuits especially in summer months as they so easy to wear. Bright colours seem to be everywhere but it’s worth picking out shades that suit you. Kate Middleton stylist seems to always pick shades that suit her. Try and find a celebrity that has same colouring as you.
this morning and Lorraine on Tv have good fashion slots. Just fast forward on iplayer or go on their website/app

Motherofalegend · 26/03/2023 09:34

I wear jeans, trainers, t-shirts and hoodies. ASOS, Nike, Puma or Adidas. I have nice jumpers from the White Stuff, John Lewis and basic t-shirts from ASOS. I have been really impressed by the dresses from New Look and have bought several of those over the past year. I have found Asda wonderfit jeans rally comfy, but don’t seem to last long - I am hourglass shape, so stick to jeans that hug better and don’t gape - also don’t make my bottom half look wider than it is!

Underwear all Ann Summers - surprised by how pretty and reasonably priced it was. Fits really well too!

Also Hari and the the Gang (I think it’s called), noce hoodies, jumpers etc. Really nice.

user1486915549 · 26/03/2023 09:51

Thank you guys.
Thanks to you I have just discovered some great basics on Uniqlo website

Upwiththelark76 · 26/03/2023 10:07

H and M . Zara , M and S id recommend ebay for picking up new items for half the price .
Also Primark edit have some good quality basics at very reasonable prices

ilovemydogmore · 26/03/2023 10:19

H&M, Mango and Zara are my go to high street shops (I'm just a bit older than you). You need to be careful with fabrics obviously as some things are very cheap looking.

The best advice I can give is to find yourself a "uniform" before you even set foot in a shop. Figure out what suits you and what you're likely to wear each day.
Do you look and feel your best in baggy bottoms and a tight top, or leggings and a long top? Do you like midi or maxi skirts? Are you only ever in trainers or do you want to incorporate boots too? What colours suit you best? To start off simple pick 3 neutrals (cream, beige and black for example) and one colour pop.
It'll then just make shopping so much easier and getting ready a 2 min job.

JaneFondue · 26/03/2023 11:28

I went in Mango yesterday and they have some really nice Chanel type blazers. Will dress up jeans and tshirts really well.

Hotvimto3 · 26/03/2023 11:47

Sainsburys and matalan

CoeliacK · 26/03/2023 12:14

Taking Shape have some fab bamboo long t shirts (currently 40% off). Their sizing are big - an XS is meant to be 16/18 but still roomy so could have gone for an XXS (!) wash well and the plain navy good staple.
Also Lilly & Me for tops
Brakeburn - great discounts in sale
M&S has some great tencel cargo trousers, three quarter and shorts at the mo too!

Ttwinkletoes · 26/03/2023 12:16

I like uniglo for casual stuff

Crabwoman · 26/03/2023 12:23

New look stores are usually less terrifying than online. Mostly basics in mine right now.
