Where do you buy clothes that she actually normal?!

I'm 32, size 16, starting right from scratch with my wardrobe as I own virtually nothing other than a couple of awful pairs of leggings and baggy t-shirts. Seriously I need HELP.

I need to start all the way at the beginning and figure out my wardrobe. I'm a SAHM abd dont go anywhere posh so need casual clothes mostly. Jeans, tops, day dresses, cardigans, jumpers, etc

I've not shopped in years. But I've just had a browse today and I'm honestly lost. New Look - I used to shop a lot in here but everything appears to be aimed at pantomime dames and hookers. Genuinly why its all.so garish and weird?! I don't even see teenagers wearing that stuff so who's buying it.

I'm 32 so hardly old!!! But I feel ancient looking at the clothes available. Next...seems mostly geared towards women working in an office or older women.

Where do people shop for nice, wearable day to day clothing? Flattering clothes for average bodies? And I don't want to spend a fortune either if possible because like I say, I'm just a SAHM.

I probably need a couple pairs of "mom" jeans - not skinny, a couple longish Cardigans that come below the bum. Tops - again longish and pretty basic...stripes, floral etc but not frumpy and old looking. I want pretty styles for a 30 something year old. So like...sensible but still young?! Don't want to look like my mother.

I know I'm a basic bitch and probably very dull but I just need basics to start me off as I have nothing.

Thank you!

Next is worth another look online as their clothes are quite middle of the road (a lot of choice so not all young, old or workwear) and they also sell a lot of other brands including Gap.

I personally find Fatface and White Stuff a bit older. Maybe it's just because my 77 year old mother shops there.

M&S has upped its game and isn't as tragic as it was once known to be.

I agree the supermarkets are a good place - Sainsburys Tu, George at Asda and F&F at Tesco. Annoyingly. Tesco stuff not available online but I always find something if I'm near a big one.

As pps have said many of the shops that aren't on the high street anymore still have an online presence including Oasis and Warehouse.

Otherwise it's a matter of picking through various shops to find the gems, eg Superdry can be good for t-shirts.

I just got me some sinophant high waisted leggings off Amazon pack of 3 (highly recommend) and a couple of oversized sweaters off pretty little thing, to lounge about at home/ out and about locally with DS but I'm quite flattered the amounts of comments I've had from my outfits, and I barely spent on them

treneton · 22/03/2023 20:40

Vinted - sell off your old stuff and buy new or nearly mew much cheaper than the shops.

Fat face
Supermarkets
Mountain warehouse
H&M
Uniqlo
White stuff
M&S

TheOGCCL · 22/03/2023 21:16

@fyn Ha yes but not everything and the good stuff is often sold out quick!

ImAvingOops · 22/03/2023 21:35

You are too young for white stuff and fatface!

I rate Victorias Secret for leggings - I bought the most gorgeous soft ones on there that had pockets for my phone. Pockets in leggings are really useful if you have young children and need free hands quickly!
VS also have lovely soft sweatshirts and hoodies.
Id steer clear of florals tbh - they are really easy to look frumpy in.
Try on lots of jeans shapes to find what suits you - M&S would be good for that since they have a variety of leg lengths and styles. They also have some nice casual blazers. Not sure if they are still in stock but last year H&M did some long cardigans in neutral colours that were dirt cheap but looked great.
I've found Next online to be better than the shops - they stock actual brands online and when I return stuff I get a refund much quicker than places like John Lewis. Id start there and M&S for tops.

Urban outiftters, Hollister, M and S surprisingly, Primark and H and M have a good mix of clothes I find. I thought UO and Hollister were going to be too young but actually they have some lovely things. I usually buy basic tops from Primark then jeans from UO, skirts and dresses from H and M, knitwear and leggings from M and S, jumpers, dresses and skirts from Hollister. I am in my late 30s if that helps.

Aphrathestorm · 23/03/2023 06:59

I get fat face and white stuff and monsoon from charity shops. Sainsbury's Tu and M&S in the sales.

Passerillage · 23/03/2023 07:03

Superdry, and Other Stories (good jeans and tops/knits), some Boden/Joules depending.

I know you say casual, but what style? Are you glam? Sporty? What celeb’s style do you love?

sandgrown · 23/03/2023 07:13

Definitely M&S mom jeans. Very comfy and wash well .

GettingStuffed · 23/03/2023 10:30

Weird fish, not cheap but really good quality. Read reviews for sizing, last year I bought three items one a 16, 1 an 18 and 1 a 20. They all fit me perfectly.

HiddenGiraffes · 23/03/2023 14:04

I'm your age and Zara, Mango, H&M, Uniqlo, occasional M&S for casual clothes.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/03/2023 14:45

People saying white stuff- I used to love that shop about 6 years ago especially for work dresses but last time I went in it seemed to be a but frumpy. No offence intended. Wondering if it's changed

Nugg · 23/03/2023 14:46

Next, Supermarkets.

JennieTheZebra · 23/03/2023 15:24

Fat face/ White Stuff are good for plain knitwear. I buy my work cardigans in there. They need to be cotton, bodily fluid proof, comfortable and reasonably cheap. I’m a nurse but it sounds like the same needs could apply to SAHMs?

Redebs · 23/03/2023 17:57

I just discovered Weird Fish dresses. Only get them when reduced

elm26 · 23/03/2023 18:02

I'm 30 and love primark, H&M, boohoo and I find some nice bits in New Look occasionally.

Choconut · 23/03/2023 18:10

Primark and Next sales are where I buy all my clothes. I often prefer mens clothes in small sizes over womens though - especially Primark t shirts - for casual clothes. Womens tees often seem to be tight under the arms and I end up with sweat patches

Hiouo · 23/03/2023 18:27

Zara, H&M (online) M&S, matalan, Oliver bonas, hush. Tunics are a bit dated though.
Stradivarius have nice mom jeans, you can get them on asos.

what else can you wear with leggings if not a tunic?

SparkyBlue · 23/03/2023 18:55

M&S have fab jersey midi dresses that are really comfortable. Wear them with boots and tights now and sandals or trainers when it's mild . I'm a sahm as well and I've bought loads from M&S recently. I also got some lovely leggings and joggers from love leggings . I got a few nice bits from Vila as well

I'm mid 30s and don't wear leggings now, and nor do any of my friends I can think of. I agree you would put them with a tunic, but either way it's a very dated look - big when I was at uni 15 years ago.

chantico · 23/03/2023 18:59

Uniqlo, Primark and Asda (yes really)

All fairly to very inexpensive, so if you make the odd mistake when finding your style it won't be too catastrophic. You might have to flick quickly past some monstrosities, but I've had some of my best tunic tops and sweatshirts from supermarkets.
