Where do you buy clothes that she actually normal?!

I'm 32, size 16, starting right from scratch with my wardrobe as I own virtually nothing other than a couple of awful pairs of leggings and baggy t-shirts. Seriously I need HELP.

I need to start all the way at the beginning and figure out my wardrobe. I'm a SAHM abd dont go anywhere posh so need casual clothes mostly. Jeans, tops, day dresses, cardigans, jumpers, etc

I've not shopped in years. But I've just had a browse today and I'm honestly lost. New Look - I used to shop a lot in here but everything appears to be aimed at pantomime dames and hookers. Genuinly why its all.so garish and weird?! I don't even see teenagers wearing that stuff so who's buying it.

I'm 32 so hardly old!!! But I feel ancient looking at the clothes available. Next...seems mostly geared towards women working in an office or older women.

Where do people shop for nice, wearable day to day clothing? Flattering clothes for average bodies? And I don't want to spend a fortune either if possible because like I say, I'm just a SAHM.

I probably need a couple pairs of "mom" jeans - not skinny, a couple longish Cardigans that come below the bum. Tops - again longish and pretty basic...stripes, floral etc but not frumpy and old looking. I want pretty styles for a 30 something year old. So like...sensible but still young?! Don't want to look like my mother.

I know I'm a basic bitch and probably very dull but I just need basics to start me off as I have nothing.

Thank you!

Yeah I've been thinking similarly about marks recently. The stores are so uninspiring but I could walk in try on 6 pairs of work trousers and walk out with 2 that were reasonable in price, comfort and appearance. DD(17) did similarly with a pair of smart trousers and college friendly trousers. Which is really an important part of what next should be

I meant what marks and Spencer should be!!!

Clarabellawilliamson · 22/03/2023 17:00

M and s for jeans, sainsburys for sweatshirts. Asda for nice plain tops (but there is lots of polyester to wade through first!)

Following. I was an Oasis girl and totally lost since they've closed down :(

Fat face is nice sometimes!

Oasis is still online. Always has a sale on too.

BebbanburgIsMine · 22/03/2023 17:03

Asda
Tesco
Sainsbury's
Yours
Simply Be

Occasionally M&S, but they're often too expensive for me.

Bearpawk · 22/03/2023 17:05

John Lewis Kin
H&M
Monki
Arket
Uniqlo

Op says she's a sahm, so if there are toddlers involved I find I can't wear black jeggings because I spend so long kneeling on the floor that the knees go white really quickly! Shame because as you say they are easy to style.

I like sainsburys for tops and asos for jeans.

What about just regular cheap leggings for rolling around the floor in at home (I did this when my youngster was at home) and jeggings for out and about? or blue jeggings (which I don’t really ever go for cos I feel fat in them personally 🙈) - would they hold the colour better xx

CambsAlways · 22/03/2023 17:09

M&S Tesco H&M Next I’m mid 60’s

thaisweetchill · 22/03/2023 17:22

I find H&M are great for your basics, they do some lovely prints too. I get mom jeans from primark I find they fit better but I've also heard M&S jeans are great.

I haven't shopped in river island for years as found their taste to be desired but I walked past last week and saw some gorgeous linen trousers which I will be trying on.

I've recently purchased a few bits from 'ELR style', they are bodysuits but started doing other bits but they're fantastic quality and do last!

Try following some fashion accounts on Instagram for inspiration as I find a lot of gorgeous styles on there that I probably wouldn't choose myself.

RichTeaCheddars · 22/03/2023 17:22

Next do some styles of jeans in the in-between sizes which I find great.
M&S do some nice mom jeans.
Also love M&S yoga leggings. Have a crossover waistband and so comfortable.
Tops/jumpers I get from Sainsbury's or Primark.

I'm a similar size and age. Looking at other replies for some inspiration

I loved Oasis and find Oliver Bonas the most similar. They do a good sale too.

Niftythrifter · 22/03/2023 18:09

I think that New Look could still be an option you just have to spend time hunting out the things that you would wear day to day so it might be worth trying to filter what you are looking at on the website and ordering from there. I think in all honesty there is some horrible stuff that is being offered on the high street at the moment and it’s just a case of filtering the good stuff from the naff flash in a pan stuff.

HubertTheGoat · 22/03/2023 18:13

Fat Face. M&S jeggings.

hateclothesshopping · 22/03/2023 18:53

Ebay. I hate making expensive mistakes and hate shoddily-made things in cheap fabrics. I buy high quality things someone else has carefully kept for best, for no more than you'd pay for new in ASOS or wherever. If it was a mistake and doesn't fit/suit me it goes straight in the charity shop bag; if I like it I wear it all the time and don't worry about spilling things on it. Environmentally friendly too. What's not to like?

yoshiblue · 22/03/2023 18:55

M&S for jeans and wide leg trousers
Monki, Tu for dresses
Tu - good basics like t shirts, cardigans
H&M I find the quality a bit mixed

Avoid Next its frumpy. Agree with others M&S has generally upped their game.

America12 · 22/03/2023 18:56

Zara
HM
Fat face
M&S
Tesco

MinorMeltdown · 22/03/2023 19:00

I don't know if it's just my local H&M but I can't find a lot of nice casual stuff?! Dresses have cut outs or weird shapes and tops are belly button length?!

Then they have a section which reminds me of Tammy girl back in the day (but for adults) and I avoid that like the plague!

HamstersAreMyLife · 22/03/2023 19:02

I'm a big New Look fan. I like the Apricot and petite line. Also like next and used to love DO but shop there less now you have to pay for returns. I miss DP on the high street, I'm not a fan of online shopping although I buy a lot from H&M and Marks in the sale because you can return easily in store.

ViscountessBridgerton · 22/03/2023 19:05

Just ended up on the Uniqlo website and ordered a load of stuff thanks to this thread 😅

CharlotteStreetW1 · 22/03/2023 19:08

Weird Fish for their Talahassee dresses. Often in the sale. I've got four and have just ordered a similar one from La Redoute. Possible not great for crawling around after toddlers although they are very comfy.

TU for leggings.

Mango for tops.

Seasalt for tunic tops if I'm feeling flush.

White Stuff.

Simply Be for basics.

Monsoon for dressier Stuff.

Can't remember the last time I was in a clothes shop.

Gufo · 22/03/2023 19:12

M and S jeans are really good. And Hush (sale) for tops.

I feel the same about New Look!

ActDottie · 22/03/2023 19:30

I’m your size, age 30 and live in sainsburys girlfriend fit jeans

getafringenotbotox · 22/03/2023 19:50

If your starting from scratch I'd do a capsule wardrobe.

I'm gradually whittling my stuff away by selling in vinted and replacing with neutrals.

Jeans next or m and s
Shein for blazers and basic tops.
Leggings I wear queenie ke from Amazon. They are really god quality I've had mine a year or so. They also hold you in a bit Grin

What has really helped me is an app called stylebook which you photograph all your clothes then you can make outfits with it all. I get much more wear out of things.

DuchessOfSausage · 22/03/2023 20:00

Jeans - M&S or Fat Face
T-shirts and hoodies - Uniqlo.
Tu (Sainsbury's) is surprisingly good.
DP Eden jeggings were great.

buckleten · 22/03/2023 20:14

M&S is great, and I also like FatFace. H&M sizing is very random and the quality is poor I think. White Stuff is nice if a little more expensive, very nice knitwear though.
