Anyone else prefer unstyled hair?

I see a lot of posts talking about great hair in terms of Kate Middleton, etc. A very glossy, styled and well groomed style.

If I am honest though I really love hair left almost wildly natural, as in any hair type, texture or any length. When someone has frizzy curls or waves I prefer them only gently treated, if that makes sense? So I much prefer a wild and loose chignon to super styled glossy curls.

I know I know we are all different, but I would love to know if there are others who love this kind of thing, whether you do it yourself or love anyone who's hair runs wild and free in the media (maybe Helena Bonham Carter, Jane Birkin, Geraldine James and so on).

I watch a lot of classical and contemporary instrumental music shows and notice women in orchestras often seem to go for the natural look, whilst also looking well 'groomed'. Being in the arts myself it does seem to be a thing, but perhaps not so popular in the mainstream?

I much prefer a wild and loose chignon to super styled glossy curls.

The effortlessly undone yet still groomed look is SO hard to achieve though, much more difficult than something that looks more styled, especially with a frizzier hair texture.

I saw a picture of Victoria Aitken in the 90s and remembered lots of women with hair like that - showing it's natural texture (with the obligatory heavy side flip that was in vogue then). You don't see it any more on female public figures.

Rebel2 · 21/03/2023 19:31

I style mine but it's still wild
First pic is brushed
Second pic is styled and diffused

@Rebel2 second pic is gorgeous !

davegrohll · 21/03/2023 19:32

I always have 'wild hair' it's naturally poker straight, I wave it, put dry shampoo in and ruffle it up abit, it looks so much better that way imo

Pinacalola · 21/03/2023 19:35

I love natural curls, beach waves and messy buns. I also love that totally done but romantic chignon look, where it's half up half down (I know that this looks undone but is often more work than the glossy done look as a PP said)
I also love the full big glam blow out look, and the silky straight look. I love how fashions change with hair.
Not so struck on my own frizz ball hair when I actually do nothing with it and look like an electrocuted poodle though 😂

Penniless · 21/03/2023 19:38

I agree entirely in relation to other people, but my hair in its natural mode is pure bush and more than a little frightening to behold.

I find the K Middleton bouncy waves sort of depressing-looking. But as a figurehead she’s pretty depressing, all coat dresses and dutiful speeches written by someone else for carefully-uncontroversial charities, so it’s probably not surprising she has Dutiful Bouncy-But-Sleek Hair.

SolitudeNotLoneliness · 21/03/2023 19:38

I have wild flyaway grey hair with a random wave through it.

I love it. I am spectacularly ungroomed.

At a day out with friends and their family I heard someone mention to my friend that I reminded them of their great aunt.

I was thrilled 😁

3littlebeans · 21/03/2023 19:42

Yup - I've noticed this too in the different circles I move.

Classical music types - often no/little make up, natural hair, may have gone grey naturally. I really like this as I fit in here!

Other situations (school mums at once of my kids school) they all look amazingly done up/fake nails etc and its not me!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 21/03/2023 19:43

My hair is crazy. It's going white (is naturally black) and it's curly. I left it to itself today and then realised I looked like I'd stuck my fingers in an electric socket. One of my colleagues said they loved it and they wanted to have biiiig hair like mine.

picklemewalnuts · 21/03/2023 19:45

I like it too. My hair is very unpredictable, I style it according to its mood. Basically loose, but maybe with a clip here or there to get it out of my eyes.

I particularly prefer hair fairly natural, as I find people hard to recognise. Once they have dyed and straightened their hair, they could be anyone!

mackthepony · 21/03/2023 19:47

Nah. I look like the hairy bikers if I leave it natural

Mamette · 21/03/2023 19:48

@Rebel2 your hair is lovely. What product do you use? My hair would be a bit like your first pic if I just left it and brushed it. I haven’t a clue so always end up just blow-drying it straight.

Loosely follow curly girl

Wash with a gentle shampoo (bounce curl)
Condition (Aldi volume)
Detangle with paddle brush
Rinse it all out
Rake through foam/mousse and squish (pantene/wella/flora and curl)
Rake through gel and squish (treluxe/aveda/jessicurl)
Diffuse dry and scrunch out any crunchy bits

swapcicles · 21/03/2023 19:51

I prefer it as it's less work!
Currently have natural hair, I'm 44 and realised dying my hair was a lot of effort, time and money when I still had very very few Grey's. Actually love the colour now 🤩
I tend to just wash frequently and brush, my hairs thick and has a slight wave, tried every product out there and it just does its own thing, so pointless doing anything with it really 😂

Kanaloa · 21/03/2023 20:00

The thing is - that ‘effortlessly wild’ look is probably as much effort as the super groomed and bouncy look. It’s like men saying they prefer ‘natural’ looks. What they generally mean is that they prefer an extremely difficult to achieve ‘no makeup’ makeup look. But obviously if that’s what you prefer that’s what you prefer! Just be aware that generally Helena Bonham Carter is not rolling out of bed with her hair perfectly dishevelled.

This is more or less what I do too. Pic attached. If I didn’t do anything and just left it I would literally look like I’d been electrocuted. 😁

I like whatever suits the individual

JeaneCocteau · 21/03/2023 20:22

Not sure how curly girl found it's way in! I opened the thread for those of us who prefer it less styled.
As lovely as it is, I much prefer the less bunched look, even slightly combed - i say this as a soft curly, they fall out whatever I do.

I do find the wild but done look easy, my hair is very porous and will hold any shape i push it in to. It's fine with a bit of leave in conditioner to soften any frizz.
I like it messily half-bunned or just a low knot, but it is fairly poofy left loose.

I often see before and after pics on here of curly girl and always, always love the before!

The Kate Middleton look reminds me of Korea, very neat, tidy and appropriate for a woman 'of status'. Not my thing but her natural looks are lovely anyway.

i love how a bit of frizz adds texture, so long as it's subtle.

DarkNecessities · 21/03/2023 20:42

I mostly wash and leave mine tbh

i have a Dyson airwrap but can rarely be bothered to use it

BluetheBear · 21/03/2023 20:44

I think sometimes hair that looks undone has actually had a lot of time spent on it

plus whether messy hair looks good depends on the hair type, colour and texture amongst other things

OtterDisgrace · 21/03/2023 20:45

I always think of styled hair as 'entry level office job' and true natural texture as 'dont care, moneyed-middle arty types'.
like a pp said once you see it you can't unsee it. agree about HBC.
