Anyone else prefer unstyled hair?

JeaneCocteau · 21/03/2023 19:07

I see a lot of posts talking about great hair in terms of Kate Middleton, etc. A very glossy, styled and well groomed style.

If I am honest though I really love hair left almost wildly natural, as in any hair type, texture or any length. When someone has frizzy curls or waves I prefer them only gently treated, if that makes sense? So I much prefer a wild and loose chignon to super styled glossy curls.

I know I know we are all different, but I would love to know if there are others who love this kind of thing, whether you do it yourself or love anyone who's hair runs wild and free in the media (maybe Helena Bonham Carter, Jane Birkin, Geraldine James and so on).

I watch a lot of classical and contemporary instrumental music shows and notice women in orchestras often seem to go for the natural look, whilst also looking well 'groomed'. Being in the arts myself it does seem to be a thing, but perhaps not so popular in the mainstream?

I have slightly wavy hair and can't stand the feel of products in it. The most I use is a tiny bit of serum for the flyaways.
I tried the curly girl and I literally had to wash it as soon as it was done. It felt vile.
My hair is currently undyed and just past the middle of my back. I generally just run a brush through it and leave it.

carriedout · 21/03/2023 20:57

I leave mine, it has always been a bit wild but I don't care.

true natural texture as 'dont care, moneyed-middle arty types' this is close to my vibe although I am not moneyed Grin

Gherkingreen · 21/03/2023 20:57

Over styled, smooth-bouncy blow dried or super straight hair isn't my preference but that's probably influenced by my own wavy- curly, random pattern, prone to frizz hair.
I stopped fighting my curls about 20 years ago but have only just really made peace with them.
I do have to manage my hair with product and patience to get it looking it's best, but it's never what I'd called styled.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 21/03/2023 21:08

I think Kate Middleton’s hair is awful, just far too over coiffed. And it’s mostly extensions anyway.

I think the bouncy blow dry is strangely a bit aging but also looks far too over done and a bit try hard. Not many can carry it off but some certainly can.

I love natural unstyled hair on everyone. I think it looks more carefree and has more life to it. The issue with any styling makes it look too uniform and unnatural. My hair is poker straight unfortunately and very fine. Though it has some movement because I just brush and dry it. When it’s straightened it just sticks to my head and looks rubbish.

declutteringmymind · 21/03/2023 21:09

I've finally found my happy everyday hair. It was thanks to a recommendation on here.

It's an elvive spray that I spray after I've washed my hair and I ether leave it so dry naturally or blow dry it any old how.

It's a frizzy mess for about 12 hours then all of a sudden it's a natural swishy bouncy wave.

Trust me, nobody would love my unstyled hair. It’s truly hideous. It’s a combination of frizz on top and straight underneath. It doesn’t look good, it looks absolutely dreadful

michaelmacrae · 21/03/2023 22:01

I have dry, wavy hair that does its own thing. Some bits are straight, some fall in ringlets, some no shape just frizz, but the longer it gets the more I like it, as it hangs better and I can do less.

My rules are that I have to use a bit of leave in cream every morning to remoisturise and 'weigh' the ends down and bring back some curl, and to always keep the ends blunt (ie no layers), because it looks less wispy and more 'heavy' that way.

I like to think it looks boho, but in reality I fear I probably look homeless some days!

JeaneCocteau · 21/03/2023 22:05

I too have frizz that just naturally drops out the day after washing. I hate putting products in as it always makes my hair seem off somehow.

I used to straighten but now feel the flat look is lifeless on my and is better suited to those with naturally flat and shiny hair, it looks lovely and natural on them!

My hair has loose, tousled curls when air dried but they drop out almost immediately. I don't understand why it is encouraged to force a curl that won't stick by following a strict regime that feels unnatural to me. I also like to use a medium toothed comb and couldnt stand not being able to do that.

I once posted a pic on here of me with my hair all wavy and in a loose knot, I love that style and it suits me. Most of the comments advised me to get keratin treatment and flatten it Sad

Trends do seem to change tho....

The thing is - that ‘effortlessly wild’ look is probably as much effort as the super groomed and bouncy look. It’s like men saying they prefer ‘natural’ looks. What they generally mean is that they prefer an extremely difficult to achieve ‘no makeup’ makeup look. But obviously if that’s what you prefer that’s what you prefer! Just be aware that generally Helena Bonham Carter is not rolling out of bed with her hair perfectly dishevelled.

Yeah. I have naturally super straight hair, the effortless tousled look takes a good hour+ of styling, some sort of heated device, various products, a few tears and swear words.... and then it steadily goes back to straight and smooth (ie flat) within a few hours.

Do you find it is better longer, to weigh it down sort of thing?
I love mine bobbed but the texture looks better longer.
I really like haphazard hair with differing textures. There is a lot you can do with it, and it is often easier to braid, etc.

If i'm honest, my hair is naturally tousled/effortlessly wild, albeit with a bit of poof, and it really isnt hard for me to achieve it. It just hasnt been fashionable for about 20 yrs Grin
I could never achieve the effortlessly straight look though!

It has been a pain in the rear for most of my life although i have come to get on with it in recent yrs.

michaelmacrae · 21/03/2023 22:20

@JeaneCocteau yes, It's very fine, so frizzes up easily. Also I have a lot of 'wide' waves rather than tight curls (IYKWIM), so if my hair is too short it doesn't curl properly, it just sort of 'bends' randomly outwards or upwards. Let's say I fight with it a lot less when it's long!

Not sure how curly girl found it's way in! I opened the thread for those of us who prefer it less styled.
As lovely as it is, I much prefer the less bunched look, even slightly combed - i say this as a soft curly, they fall out whatever I do.

I do find the wild but done look easy, my hair is very porous and will hold any shape i push it in to. It's fine with a bit of leave in conditioner to soften any frizz.
I like it messily half-bunned or just a low knot, but it is fairly poofy left loose.

I often see before and after pics on here of curly girl and always, always love the before!

The Kate Middleton look reminds me of Korea, very neat, tidy and appropriate for a woman 'of status'. Not my thing but her natural looks are lovely anyway.

You see you find it easy, I find it shit and I look shit. My friend just lets it dry and it's great, if only...

Rainbow1901 · 21/03/2023 22:27

I have chemo curls which would be great if they dried naturally in a non-wet look curl/wave. Bu as it is - it is blow-dried and ironed into submission. My natural curly look is saved for holidays abroad - no-one knows me!! 👀

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 21/03/2023 22:46

This makes me feel a bit sad. I have curly hair that needs styling, else it is just an uneven triangle of frizz. It doesn't 'curl' on it's own, it just frizzes up and looks horrible. So I have a choice of either styled curls or styled blowdry - which I now learn looks 'entry level office job' or 'out of date'.

Not all of us are blessed with hair that falls into shape like bedhead in the movies.

I think it's more that I laboured under the impression that it was horrible for decades, being ashamed of it and only ever seeing the negative. So Ive spent so much of my life forcing it to be what it isn't, and it was really hard work, until realising there are actually some 'easy' positives if I go with it's own nature.

On a crap note it does go limp quickly, and i have to wash and start again within 2 days. Or if i have to wear a hatGrin

I dont think natural is always best, or else i wouldnt wear mascara, but wild hair has been more or less shunned outside of wacky fashion editorials for a long time, and even then they'd use straight haired models by default, with a bit of backcombing.

I think we are generally encouraged to hate what we have, so someone has to sit in the shadows and feel ugly. That's marketing. I suppose all hair styles are easy when they're what nature gave you.

Nope.
I have your hair. Your description fits me, so what i am saying is that i like it! We have been brainwashed to loathe our hair, and we do not 'need' to force it to do anything. We can only go with what we are comfortable with, although society will affect our perception of that.
If frizz was declared perfect and covetable tomorrow, and the world's richest began to sport it, I bet you would see an almost instant shift towards loving it in the mainstream.

healthy looks good, porous fluffy hair is still healthy if undamaged and isnt anything to be ashamed of!

Mine is a bit like this naturally but without a fringe. It is just a 'mass' of wavy fluff, but if taken care of i have grown to like it. There's really no need to force spiral curls into it.

Anyone else prefer unstyled hair?

I agree OP. I hate the feel and smell of products and my hair does its own thing no matter what I do anyway so I just live with it.

I have lost count of the people I know who have naturally wavy or curly hair but straighten it daily because "my hair is awful" and would never leave the house unstyled. A hangover from the 90s I think when poker straight was in fashion. It's a bit sad really.

I find all the try-hard, artificial curls, poker straight, whatever styles quite ageing and just boring. Last time I caught a plane abroad you could tell who the non-British women were by their hair - lots just had natural hair (not "this took me two hours", but just wash and go natural), no harsh yellows, ends burnt by straighteners or extensions to be seen anywhere. It was quite refreshing really.

Amazing how many mumsnet users can instantly spot all non British women at airports by their amazing natural beauty and outstanding fashion sense. I’ve been all over the world and find most people are about the same - as in some good looking, some less so, some high maintenance, some less so. I certainly haven’t noticed every single non British woman (so a huge huge huge number) with beautifully amazing natural hair to the point that I can single them out on the plane.

Kanaloa · 21/03/2023 23:17

You see the same thing on fashion threads. Apparently all ‘European’ people are instantly spotted by their superior fashion and slim figures. While in real life most European people just look normal… like the rest of us!

Then our hair is nothing alike Confused my hair doesn't look like that in the slightest.

It looks more like this pic, but not as long and flatter at the root and puffier at the ends. Put up, I get a halo of frizz round my face like I'm wearing a sunflower mask. I genuinely can't not use a product in my hair, and leave in conditioner is not something that works well for me either.

Some interesting assumptions there Kanaloa. In my previous post I didn't state where I travelled (not Europe) or described natural hairstyles as superior or beautiful.

I presume you've thought of cutting layers into your hair, to get rid of the triangular shape? Mine can get like that too when short, though mine's a lot thinner than that lady's! I haven't been to a hairdresser in years but I think they can cut to take the 'heaviness' out of hair and make it fall with a bit more movement..
