Straight hair out of fashion now?

Plantagenette · 11/03/2023 22:20

I don't personally believe that any type of hair should be in or out of favour (but it sure as heck serves capitalism to put one in the shade!), but my hairdresser was chatting about to me about trends this week and mentioned the pin straight look is done and dusted.

I notice less younger people with very straight/straightened hair I must admit, but I'd say they look mostly natural. Wearing it long certainly seems to be still in favour!

What do you think? I do see a lot more curlies going about which is great.
She actually said straightened hair looked really dated now, which reminded me of mumsnet Grin
And she said this as she was...blowdrying mine straight to hurry me out the door!

i thought straight was back cause of the 90s/00s

journeyofsanity · 11/03/2023 22:22

Well yes, that flat ironed, unnatural dead straight hair has been out for quite some time. But natural looking straight hair is still very much a thing along with wavy hair and curls. I think beautiful hair in a more natural state seems to be what is trending. So natural looking straight rather than ironing your waves into a pancake flat things

I think really flat, straightened hair has been out of style for many, many years.

Is 80s hair aka Van Halen or Iron Maiden back in style yet as that's what mine is like in it's natural state! Patiently waiting!

It has thankfully !

tiredhadenough · 11/03/2023 22:38

The trouble is some of us have no choice.

My hair is shit. Not curly just frizzy and hideous. I tried curly girl and ended up having to avoid all mirrors as I was so ugly so I'm back to straightening it so I look relatively decent 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes 90s styles are coming back in now so I imagine v straight hair will be as well. Dd is 13 and all of her friends straighten their hair

BitOutOfPractice · 11/03/2023 22:42

My hair is naturally poker straight. It will not hold any sort of curl or wave. So I guess I’m unfashionable again 🤷‍♀️

Tralahlah · 11/03/2023 22:42

Agree with everyone that the poker straight hair look is looking dated now. All that ironing wrecks your hair in the end. Seeing people wearing their hair more naturally, especially with natural waves and curls. Lots of shag cuts and mullet styles too. The variety is nice to see.

username1722 · 11/03/2023 22:46

I still see lots of women with straight hair, but it's not flat against the head like it used to be. There's volume at the roots. Everyone wants volume in their hair these days.

Morestrangethings · 11/03/2023 22:53

In the 70s some girls used to iron their hair straight with an iron and ironing board, then in the 90s it was in again and then early 2010s to pre-covid again. Three times in my life time so far. At one point in the 90s we had some women spiral perming, and other women flat ironing hair.

My hair is the same @BitOutOfPractice. It's heavy and poker straight. Any curl drops out within a couple of hours no matter what witchery any hairdresser uses on it.

It is boring and flat!

Plantagenette · 11/03/2023 22:58

i used to iron mine flat in my teens, more than anything it was really dangerous!
My own hair is neither straight nor curly, so it's easy for me to tease it both ways, but in its natural state it looks a fright.

I do agree that natural, whether straight or curly is a delight to see after what felt like years of everyone looking almost identical.

I think really flat, straightened hair has been out of style for many, many years.

it was but it's coming back, catwalks were doing it last yr, seen it on more celebs & i'm starting to see lots of young girls with it now. It takes a while to filter through to the masses.

I have hair like Kelly Hoppen. So I’ve never been exactly trendy. I went through a phase about 20 years ago where I’d get it blow dried straight at the hairdresser, but it really didn’t suit me. As I’ve got older, I’ve learnt to appreciate my curls.

Kranke · 11/03/2023 23:07

Straightened hair hasn’t been fashionable since the late 90s/00s. Think you might need a new hairdresser if you want a more fashionable cut.

Was going to say this. My 18 y/o cousin is a bit of an ‘influencer’ and has poker straight hair. Most teens/younger people I know have it dead straight with a central parting. Or very sleekly tied back in a low bun/long straight ponytail.

I’d say overly styled waves are more dated.

Vitriolinsanity · 11/03/2023 23:09

I see the blunt Bob as the current trend. Straight on day 1, beach waves on day 2 and a messy up do on day 3.

You may want straight hair to be pas se, but like skinny jeans it may simmer but never die.

I have been unsuccessfully trying to put waves and curls into my hair for years. I thought I was doing it wrong but I'm glad to hear "dead straight" is an actual hair type and it's not just me!

magicthree · 11/03/2023 23:15

I think this also. Hated that poker straight hair, and it is so easy to see that it has been straightened. Natural hair is a million times nicer.

ImSoShiney · 11/03/2023 23:22

I've just had my long straight hair cut short cause I thought it was making me look old. Now it's shorter with gentle waves I think I look loads younger. No idea if that's down to what's fashionable or not like 😂

Enthrallingstoryofstillnessandlight · 11/03/2023 23:26

All the kids still have long poker straight hair though

Chocolatetadpole · 11/03/2023 23:26

Still waiting for fuzzy, frizzes at the slightest bit of humidity hair to come in to fashion sigh

CarPoor · 11/03/2023 23:33

The blow out, layered Dyson air wrap look is what's in right now.

But I don't think straight hair is not in. I would say just a more sleek/shiny straight. I guess an enhanced natural look is what's in? Depending on if your straight/curly

I don't think straight or curly hair will ever go out of fashion, that's just hair? That's like saying brown hair will go out of fashion. It cant

Vitriolinsanity · 11/03/2023 23:36

@Enthrallingstoryofstillnessandlight to be fair you can't see because they're all wearing those coats with GIANT fur trimmed hoods. Where I live it's like Cartman on top and skinny blue legs on the bottom (it's fecking cold girls, put some tights on!)
