The Rachel is back.

Ignoring the fact that the second pic looks nothing like the original... I have the following questions:

  1. Did it ever really go away?
  2. Isn't it just called long layers?
  3. Am I the only person who has had this style since the 90's?
The Rachel is back.

I only recently had my
'Rachel' hair cut into a short Bob. Instantly regretted it!! And now more so, having seen your post that it's now 'back in' 😰 Will take me years to grow my lovely Rachel back 🤦‍♀️

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 05/03/2023 10:32
  1. No.
  2. Possibly
  3. I don't think so.
Whataretheodds · 05/03/2023 10:33

The picture on the right is not the Rachel!
And long layers isn't a Rachel either.

Apparently it came back in 2021.

I agree, the Rachel never went away because it is an easy style that makes a lot of people look really great.

So many hairstyles are just pretty basic.

LolaMoon · 05/03/2023 10:35

Those photos dont show "the rachel" - that was jennifer aniston before she had the rachel cut. It was a much shorter layered look

This in spades. I bet the writer is someone who wasn't around when the original Rachel hype was happening.

Rachel later had longer styles but it wasn't the sensation like the season 1 hair

DorritLittle · 05/03/2023 10:38

Yeah those pics are not a Rachel. My best friend had one in 1994 and it was nothing like that which is long layers, which I have. Along with almost everyone else who has long hair.

ETref · 05/03/2023 10:38

I've had this style of haircut my entire adult life. Sometimes shoulder length but mostly longer. It is just layers with some shorter bits framing your face. It looks good styled straight or curly/wavy, easy to maintain, gives nice volume and is flattering on most people.

Nice to know my hair is 'in' though 🤣

That article claims it is the haircut of the Millennial generation but Millennials were barely teens when it was in fashion. Poker straight Rachel hair was their do.

True those pics aren’t right. It’s this one

It was a late Gen X style.

Caramac555 · 05/03/2023 10:50

Finally some good news. Some of us quite suited it

Absolutely Gen X. As were the good bits of the 90s 😉

PandasAreUseless · 05/03/2023 10:58

I've recently had a particularly dodgy haircut and have been referring to it as a 'mullet'.
But come to think of it, I've got a Rachel!
....and I'm back in the game.

Soccermumamir · 05/03/2023 11:53

I think they're calling it the 'Butterfly Effect' the new Rachel cut.

AbsolutePixels · 05/03/2023 13:52

I'm not surprised it's back, it's a great style and we're seeing so many 90s/Y2K throwbacks these days. I'm not sure about those chunky highlights though!!

journeyofsanity · 05/03/2023 14:02

The Rachel has unflattering boof on top. All poofed out. I don't think it suits anyone. Layered hair on the other hand can suit many people.

AbsolutePixels · 05/03/2023 14:11

I don't think the boof is unflattering. It creates what Korean beauty influencers call a 'high cranial top'.

However, styling-wise, it does look like a 'Can I speak to the manager' haircut.

The high cranial top tends to stand up from the head not too much outwards at the sides. The Rachel as you say does have more 'can I speak with the manager' vibes.

Omigod imagine talking at cross purposes with your hairdresser, expecting to get a cut like in the OP and coming out with an actual Rachel! Brings back terrible memories of Essensuals Cambridge giving me an unwanted Rachel in 1998 😫 Hair is naturally frizzy wavy so was really hard to maintain.

HollyLolly2023 · 05/03/2023 15:07

I can't wait for the Karen haircut to be back as I look good in it

I feel you - was also the victim of a botched 'Rachel' circa 1998! 🤣

CharlotteStreetW1 · 05/03/2023 15:28

Ah, I loved my shortish "Rachel" (which basically consisted of the top layer going under and the bottom layers flipping out). Even my hyper-critical mother said how pretty it looked 🙂

I had a short layered bob just before lockdown and it grew out into a "Rachel". I was tempted to keep it.

Alittlebitfunny · 05/03/2023 16:01

I really wanted to ask my hairdresser for a Rachel last year but lost my courage! I felt great when I had it in the early 00s when in my 20s - and agree it was like the shorter ones pictured, not those in the opening post. 20 years on and five stone heavier I think it's better not to try recreate the look!
