The Rachel is back.

Ignoring the fact that the second pic looks nothing like the original... I have the following questions:

  1. Did it ever really go away?
  2. Isn't it just called long layers?
  3. Am I the only person who has had this style since the 90's?
The Rachel is back.

I had this in the mid nineties. Love it.

HeadNorth · 06/03/2023 17:02

I had a Rachel in the 90s - I was young, skinny and rocked it. I agree, it was basically shoulder length with shorter layers, some flicking in and some flicking out. No camera phones then so not much in the way of evidence of my fabulous Rachel hair. I won't be repeating the look this time around...

There was a large period of the 90s where you could have said French Bob, pixie cut whatever but you still came out of the salon with a Rachel . Confused

I only recently had my
'Rachel' hair cut into a short Bob. Instantly regretted it!! And now more so, having seen your post that it's now 'back in' 😰 Will take me years to grow my lovely Rachel back 🤦‍♀️

I had been contemplating this too 🙄

Those photos dont show "the rachel" - that was jennifer aniston before she had the rachel cut. It was a much shorter layered look

These are still quite long layers imo.
The op was from instagram. I am merely the messenger.

I've had this style of haircut my entire adult life. Sometimes shoulder length but mostly longer. It is just layers with some shorter bits framing your face. It looks good styled straight or curly/wavy, easy to maintain, gives nice volume and is flattering on most people.

Nice to know my hair is 'in' though 🤣

☺️

I've recently had a particularly dodgy haircut and have been referring to it as a 'mullet'.
But come to think of it, I've got a Rachel!
....and I'm back in the game.

Ah, I loved my shortish "Rachel" (which basically consisted of the top layer going under and the bottom layers flipping out). Even my hyper-critical mother said how pretty it looked 🙂

I had a short layered bob just before lockdown and it grew out into a "Rachel". I was tempted to keep it.

I found this quite mushroomy.

Yeah a proper Rachel in my day was, as a PP said, the longer later curling out and the shorter top layer curling in. Great lengths were gone to with a curling tong to make this look as unnatural as possible Grin

At my school if you were extremely lucky your top later had highlights through it. I never got that as I never went to a proper hairdresser, just a barber in the village. I eventually got the Rachel by sneaking away to a very scruffy town nearby to a proper(ish) hairdresser. I'd been saving up for ages as the haircut was £15 and I needed 4 buses and 2 taxis to get there and back. I was away for hours. Ah the 90s.

looks a lot like the 'mumnsnet haircut'
<ducks>

it's a nice timeless, effortless hairstyle.

WhoopItUp · 07/03/2023 09:29

Can anyone tell me exactly what the mumsnet haircut is? I hear it mentioned but never know.

HollyLolly2023 · 08/03/2023 10:14

@WhoopItUp It's where you cut your hair in a ponytail, giving you layers in one snip. The butterfly method is a tiktok version of the original mumsnet haircut: hair all in a high pony, could be as high as near your forehead like a unicorn then you cut it straight. Depending on how close or far to the scrunchy or hair bobble that you cut it it will give you shorter length and short layers or longer layers. Google images has pics of it. Very easy and works but it's not as good as a hairdresser's cutting the layers IMO as they work with your crown and how you part your hair rather than a blanket snip. Thick hair is forgiving for DIYing but if you have thin hair and double points if it's also straight there is less margin for error.

Oh wow, thanks! I remember seeing this in lockdown.

I was reduced to tears by a botched Rachel. Never again.
