I guess you could look at what women were wearing at the platinum jubilee ceremony at St Paul's - it's on YouTube and it's a very similar event. Presumably the invite will come with a list of dos and don'ts

MrsOrange · 04/03/2023 05:54

Assuming Op is not part of the aristocracy, then she's likely been invited for charity or community work. In which case Op, congratulations for the recognition for your work. For me this is the kind of thing that screams personal shopper session at John Lewis.

Itsallok · 04/03/2023 06:03

Yes. Members of the aristocracy come on MN for style tips!!

Twizbe · 04/03/2023 06:19

I used to work with someone that's related to Autumn Kelly.

For the wedding she went to John Lewis for a stylist session.

For an event like this I'd do the same.

Did you seriously write that? You used to work with someone who is related to the ex-wife of a member of the royal family. Agree about the style session but really?

toomuchlaundry · 04/03/2023 06:24

@Itsallok why wouldn’t she write that, she was putting in the context what event someone was going to as to why they used the stylist session

If you want to be 'zoomed in to' on the telly, I suggest something like this...

Off to the Coronation...
LlynTegid · 04/03/2023 06:35

One hopes you have an enjoyable day. One thinks the £32 suggestion is a good one.

One should be prepared for the vagaries of the weather in early May, one thinks.

One should. Nicely phrased

Twizbe · 04/03/2023 06:52

@Itsallok what's wrong with that?

Op asks what to wear to a formal royal event

A few ppl suggest styling

I say I know someone who did that for a formal royal event and recommend it....

This is style and beauty not AIBU.

Actually I'd go to John Lewis for a stylist session. If you tell them it's for the coronation they'll probably roll out the red carpet, or at least a glass of fizz.

That's a good idea.

I don't know if it's the sort of thing you wear a hat to.

Thats a really good idea.

Try looking at phase eight. I think you should steer away from loud prints.

bonjello · 04/03/2023 07:09

I think some people are taking the piss.

I hope you have a lovely time OP.

Theos · 04/03/2023 07:12

The op will be the wife of a member of parliament. Prob a minister.

mrssmiling · 04/03/2023 07:14

John Lewis stylist is a great suggestion - maybe at the Oxford St branch? I was there recently and the range is certainly bigger and better than at my home store. Selfridges is also down the road, and Liberty has some lovely dresses, including Rixo which might be worth a look. You could also look at hiring? My Wardrobe and Hurr are two companies with designer dresses for hire - other people may have good recommendations? Hope you have a great day! 😀

How do you know you’re being invited OP? Genuinely interested.

She doesn't - her description of the logistics is wrong.

Just enjoy the thread as a fantasy!

SaltyGod · 04/03/2023 08:00

Theos · 04/03/2023 07:12

Or, the OP could have been invited on her own merit for her own achievements?

Irrespective, congrats on the invite. There will be lots of options in the shops as spring / summer formal wear comes into stock.

If you have a high street budget head for JL for a styling session and get yourself a lovely frock that you'll feel confident in, and of course a hat.

It'll probably involve lots of sitting and standing around so I'd also aim for comfort.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/03/2023 08:07

How exciting! My mind immediately turns to the lavatorial. How will they provide loos for the vast crowd in the Abbey? Similar logistics to Royal Weddings and the Queen's funeral, I suppose.

Theos · 04/03/2023 08:13

Why do people keep saying John Lewis? It’s so fkn frumpy

Theos · 04/03/2023 08:15

If she was invited she’d say “I have been “ not. We

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/03/2023 08:15

Sounds about right to me for the Coronation, a woman in her 50s and a not unlimited budget.

waltzingparrot · 04/03/2023 18:48

I'd hit your nearest independent dress shop.
