Daily SPF 50 that you can actually wear every day?

I've started using trentinoin at night so need to use sunscreen consistently. I never really used sunscreen before unless at the beach or something, hence a lot of sun damage.

I've tried some different brands, and never really got in the habit of wearing sunscreen daily like you're supposed to. Mostly because I didn't want to be at work etc with a white flaky film all over my face and neck.

Lately I've splashed out on a few sample sizes of better brands and they're ridiculous. The latest was £15 for a small bottle of Boots no7 advanced whatever, put it on and gave it a while to settle, ended up with again a scaly and pilly white sheen. It stings like anything too. I mean I'd wear it at the beach but I have to be presentable at work.

Any recommendations or should I just get a big hat?

ultrasun is a good one

hettiethehare · 02/03/2023 14:36

I like the Dr Sams SPF as well.

I find to avoid getting a white cast I need to put my SPF on gradually - so dot small amounts over my face then rub in, then repeat a couple of times. It seems to absorb much better that way.

Also - is the flaking from the tretinoin? If I have even the slightest tret flakiness then my SPF looks awful - it seems to magnify the flakiness x a billion on me. I have found that it is better with gradual application though.

I use this and don't have issues
Clarins

I love this uv plus but I've run out and unsure about buying again as they seem to have changed the formula quite dramatically? What was one brilliant product is now three!

Have you tried one of the new ones @Onthegrid ? If so, what is it like?

It also seems to have gone up in price but I need to make a decision soon.

cerave have started selling spf 50 and it’s fairly budget friendly. I wear it alone and under make up with no issues

LuciferRising · 02/03/2023 14:46

How often do people reapply? Just looking at the Watery Essence, it says every 2 - 3 hours.

Howtohideasausage · 02/03/2023 15:05

La Roche Posey

simbobs · 02/03/2023 15:16

They all need reapplying every 2-3 hours, apart from Ultrasun which is meant to go on a clean dry skin first, before anything else, though I do use it on top of other skincare if it is well sink in. La Roche Posay and Garnier are good and less expensive. I also like Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen.

Usernamen · 02/03/2023 15:19

Does anyone reapply every 2-3 hours when not on holiday? ie at work, when out and about, etc.

I don’t, but I’m thinking that I should!

I like the sound of this. No white cast?

No, none. It's actually marketed for use by children but does the trick. I've never had any sunburn on my face when using it and use it all year round, though apply more in summer understandably.
I assume they still do it; I know they do tend to change their ranges fairly often.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

DorisJoy · 02/03/2023 15:57

Another vote for Altruist face fluid. Comes in spf 30 or 50 and I’d say on a par with la Roche posay but at half the cost. It’s about to be released in Sainsburys. Also found on their website or Amazon are a stockist.

Calphurnia88 · 02/03/2023 16:15

Cerave.

Was using LRP but it left a white tint.

ArseMenagerie · 02/03/2023 16:23

zebette · 02/03/2023 14:01

Seconded

Thirded. Altruist is great - I use the ‘for the face’ formulation

TheFormidableMrsC · 02/03/2023 16:31

I either use either Ambre Solaire anti-age or La Roche Posay. Both lovely textures and great under make up. The Ambre Solaire is really good value.

BMrs · 02/03/2023 16:48

Altruist face fluid spf 50. £9 on Amazon and free delivery with prime x

LoobyDop · 02/03/2023 17:44

I used to like LRP, but I’m sure they changed the formula, because it started pilling on me. They definitely whacked the price up and changed the packaging to a leaky bottle. So I switched to Bondi Sands. About £7 a bottle, doesn’t pill or leave white marks, nice texture and does the job.

Blueberrymood · 02/03/2023 18:30

Another vote for altruist. Its really lovely, lightweight, no cast and cheap. I found lrp pilled on me.

wisteriaplum · 02/03/2023 18:48

QueefofSheena · 02/03/2023 13:42

I use Beauty Pie SPF50 at the moment. It’s a nice lightweight formula and does the trick.

Another vote for this. Lightweight and gives a great base for makeup

Iwonder08 · 02/03/2023 19:09

Dermatologist told me she uses ultrasun as there is nothing better on the market. Not cheap though

Pirrip · 02/03/2023 19:57

Another vote for Altruist

Branster · 02/03/2023 20:06

Ultrasun it's great. I Only buy it on offer as it can be quite expensive at full price.

RebelDiamonds · 02/03/2023 20:14

Heliocare. They have lots of different ranges to suit individual skin. I use the fluid cream as it's also like a moisturiser and my mum uses the gel oil free as she has acne prone skin. It's amazing and I wouldn't use anything else.

Housenoob · 02/03/2023 20:15

Reading this with interest and thinking of trying the LRP or Altruist- probably the latter as it's cheaper. But I have dark (Indian) skin, does anyone with similar skin tone know if either of these be more likely to leave a white cast? The cast looks SO awful, ends up making my skin look grey 😭

RebelDiamonds · 02/03/2023 20:16

Heliocare also do a tinted SPF in 3 different shades. I use it as a foundation in summer and it's as good.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 02/03/2023 20:20

It's trial and error. I've tried so many of the ones mentioned on this thread and have only re-purchased one or two. Hated LRP, hated Eucerin, Altruist was too greasy, Biore had too much alcohol in it etc. etc.

SlippinKimmy · 02/03/2023 20:21

LRP irritates my skin so I can’t use it. I like Altruist, Heliocare and various Korean face sunscreens that are really light - Etude House do some good ones.

However, my favourite is by Pharmaceris, which I bought on a whim when Escentuals did one of their French pharmacy specials. This one is for sensitive skin, goes on a bit thick but really sinks in. Don’t need to use a moisturiser when I use this one!
