Can anyone recommend a proven nail supplement for very thin brittle nails please?

My nails have been shocking for years. However recently if I let them grow beyond say 2mm they bend and split further and further back into my nail bed. Now a few have broken so far back it looks like I have bitten them all of my life. I have some ongoing health issues so not sure if it's all related but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend something that has really worked well for them? Thanks

Mumsnet can you unhide my reply. I'm not trying to sell anything dodgy!

My nails look exactly the same after having my BIAB beautiful nails removed

Had them on for a holiday , was told they do not damage natural nails .. absolute bollocks

They are wrecked , exact the same as last time I had gel or shellac or whatever it was

Using a Sally Hansen oil treatment but it's not making much difference

They will be ok when completely grown out

I take Perfectil max too.

Biotin

I've been taking biotin for two years. My nails have gone from peeling, splitting and breaking, to growing very quickly and staying strong. I have to file them back each week.
It took a good few months before I noticed an improvement.

I'd love to know what can help my horrible ridged nails.

Marine collagen. I was doubtful and just got the cheapest supplement at Boots but after 6 weeks it's made a visible difference

Second collagen. My nails grow like mad and are really seeing since I started it. I take absolute collagen.

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 21/03/2023 11:21

If anyone is interested I started biotin, collagen but I guess that will take a month or two to grow up my nails. I have used two coats of Sally Hansen Nailsworth miracles twice a week too. My nails are already much better but I'm keeping mindful to keep them under 2mm as well so not bending back or snapping. I will try in summer to see if they can grow longer.

I have just bought this from QVC, and am hoping it will help my awful nails.

The only thing that stops my nails splitting and breaking is Nail Envy or what I’m currently trying, Nails Inc’s Gel Rehab, not that I’ve ever used gels. It makes them hard and strong and much harder to break, but obviously it’s just external scaffolding.

I take biotin 12,000mcgs, mainly because I used to give it to my horses to help their hooves stay hard and they had very good feet! I also took Philip Kingsley’s soya protein capsules for a year or two, which I think did help my hair but not my nails, which are quite possibly beyond repair.

I always assumed a lifetime of horses and 35 years’ nursing (all that hand-washing!) were to blame, but I’ve been retired for 7 years and my last horse died 8 years ago, and my nails are still shit.

I also use cuticle oil when I remember - I think it’s probably the massaging of cuticles and the nail beds that helps, rather than the oil itself.

Mine were like that, the started slimming world and you have to have 2 portions of calcium a day,I was no where near having enough and now my nails are so long and strong I keep having to cut them down!

The best thing I ever used was ProStrong, no idea if you can still get it outside of the States now as I haven't needed it for years (nails fell apart after two pregnancies beset by hyperemesis.) It's a clear fluid that you just brush on to the nails, the protein in it bonds to the protein in your natural nail. I had astonishingly positive results. I'd tried everything that everyone recommends (inc OPI Nail Envy which is dreadfully overhyped & overpriced IMHO.) I have a fantastic diet but my body was so drained it had nothing left to give my nails for a while!

Once your nails recover make sure you use a good nail & cuticle oil as maintenance. Kernow Spa make an excellent one, beautiful scent, inexpensive & all natural. Also make sure when you file your nails you use a quality glass or crystal file & file smoothly in single strokes from edge to tip (not a sawing back & forth) so you don't 'jar' or put pressure on the nail which can lead to it weakening.

I’d recommend binge watching The Salon Life videos on YouTube. She’s transformed my nails! That said, if your Sally Hansen stuff is working then it might not be of much use to you. She always recommends keeping the nails short when growing out damage.

HRT (if you are perimenopausal) might also help - brittle nails is a sign of depleted oestrogen.
