Can anyone recommend a proven nail supplement for very thin brittle nails please?

My nails have been shocking for years. However recently if I let them grow beyond say 2mm they bend and split further and further back into my nail bed. Now a few have broken so far back it looks like I have bitten them all of my life. I have some ongoing health issues so not sure if it's all related but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend something that has really worked well for them? Thanks

Biotin

Polecat07 · 19/02/2023 17:44

OPI Nail Envy is very good. It comes in clear matte, clear shiny, or a few nail polish colours. It's not the cheapest nail strengthener on the market but still considered one of the best I think.

Polecat07 · 19/02/2023 17:46

Sorry I didn't read properly and assumed you were looking for something topical!
Well there's loads of supplements for skin, hair and nails and they all contain much the same key vitamins and minerals. Collagen makes a big difference for some people as well, I can't say I've tried that myself though.

Thanks @Polecat07 I'm fine with tackling from all angels. I'm currently superglue my nails at the breaks it's far back and painful. I have some colegen but I need to take it religiously now I think

Biotin. I started it for my hair but I noticed it first in my nails. It's made them grow at a rate of knots and they're strong as anything too.

I have bitten my nails my whole life they have always been really thin and brittle as soon as i started getting any length they would break. I started doing my own gel nails in September and use builder gel for strength as well as Solgar Hair, Nails and skin vitamins, and my nails are growing really long and feel much stronger. I actually have to file my nails as as they grow too long.

Can anyone recommend a good Biotin supplement please?

Yes to biotin and an omega supplement.

Also I must pass on the recommendation for Essie Hard to Resist. You'll need two or three coats. It's really helped my nails.

Eat two cubes of jelly a day - much cheaper than collagen and more yummy! Really works!

HermioneWeasley · 19/02/2023 18:20

Taking one collagen supplement a day has made a huge difference to my think, flakey nails

greenspaces4peace · 19/02/2023 18:24

topically i use Nail Inc. Nail Kale (it's clear really)
followed by OPI Nail Envy in either clear or clear pink.
this combo is enough to not need superglue. lasts nearly a week (and i don't wear gloves for dishes which i should)
oh please wear gloves when doing dishes or housework, that makes a big difference.
lastly i still need to keep them relatively short.

My mum used to make us eat a cube a day as a child, as well as Rosehip syrup. My goodness, we all loved queuing up for our "meds" 😍

Any particular kind? My nails are so rubbish!

swayingpalmtree · 19/02/2023 18:30

Zinc and selenium and a few coats of OPI nail envy on a regular basis.

My nails were soft as tissue and constantly breaking/splitting- after this regime, they are so hard I sometimes struggle to trim them with nail clippers. The difference is astounding.

Goodness just eat more protein. It’s cheaper!

My Dad had brittle nails and used Cornucrescine (a treatment for horses hooves) on his nails. Swore by it.

I have the same brittle nails but use Perfectil Max and Omega oil. I’ve had good results and it’s improved my hair too.

I eat enough protein from a range of sources. I need something else as its not working. My nails are so thin I'm getting to the point where I can't wash my hair without them ripping

I tried opi, nails Inc etc but the only one that worked for me was nailtiques formula 2 and a good cuticle oil (CND).

grumpycow1 · 19/02/2023 19:23

Marine collagen powder, I was taking the Beauty Pie one and my nails were never better! I stopped for breastfeeding but recently started again and I’ve noticed improvement already after a couple of weeks.

www.boots.com/natures-bounty-hair-skin-nails-60-mixed-berry-flavour-gummies-10240001 I've been taking these as well using Jojoba oil (multiple times a day) and my nails are completely transformed. I actually had to cut them down on Friday as they were getting too long. Started in January and before that my nails were very similar to yours.
