I ask this in all seriousness and not to start an argument but it occurred to me that pretty every post at the moment on S&B has several posters essentially saying 'who cares...wear what you like'.

And we all know that's true and actually exactly what does happen but I think S&B IS a place to talk about....well...style & beauty related things!

I don't see the point in opening a thread about 'what should I wear to x, y or z' to post 'no-one cares, wear what you like'

It's just not in the spirit!

I want to chat to fellow posters about all manner of trivial S&B things without being made feel I'm being trivial! My life is stressful & this is an escape at times.

Does anyone else feel the same or am I just feeling cranky?

That is perfect- too true Grin

I agree OP, there is a thread at the moment asking for advice on what to wear to afternoon tea at Claridges. What a reasonable post for an S&B board, it’s very raison d’etre in fact. So of course someone has bustled in to say that personally, they wouldn’t give it the tiniest thought. Why would you do that? On the S&B board.

The ‘fashion is so trivial’ posts are deeply annoying. No one is pretending we are solving world hunger on this board, it is specifically about Style & Beauty. If such ephemera is beneath you, there is no need to post to tell us that. No one cares how worthy you are - we want to know what to wear to eat at Claridges 😁

Perfect response and example. ❤️

The S&B threads have always been filled with such comments. Years ago there was a thread where a poster was asking for recommendations for a designer bag - one poster suggested she buy a garden bench instead.

I mean a bench is nice but doesn't really hold your purse.

I remember that thread! What is the matter with people. 😂

Style and beauty used to be one of the most friendly boards on MN. People would be honest but not in a bitchy way. Lately I see more and more posters trying to out mean girl each other. Being bitchy about people dressing up for afternoon tea of heaven forbid someone start a thread about what to wear to the Ivy.

I think this is true all over MN. It's just not as friendly as it once was. A poster on another thread (completely different topic) suggested that it's possibly some sort of bleed over from Twitter. I'm not on Twitter so I'm not familiar with how people post there, but evidently it can be pretty nasty.

SocksAndTheCity · 18/02/2023 19:13

I remember the one about the Ivy. It was so thoroughly obnoxious I remember scrolling back up to see if it was actually in S&B or on AIBU.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 18/02/2023 19:23

I do have an issue with the trainer threads. Are X or Y more fashionable / stylish?
They turn me into my mother.
"Well dear, you have decided to get a pair of white trainers, jolly good. So pop along to a shoe shop, try a few on and buy the most comfortable".

I might just be a tad jealous that some people have far more standard feet than me and can wear almost any shoe. So I resist posting on them.

Agreed.

Though I do feel sad there are grown women who lack the confidence to choose a pair of white trainers. That level of self-doubt and need for conformity, is not healthy

new2mn · 18/02/2023 19:42

I think there are 2 extremes:

(1) Those who only wear what is deemed trendy by the masses. Most other people will try out trends every now and then, whether out of curiosity or for a social experience. After all we still use sites like MN despite being corporation-run, as they provide a social experience and satisfy our curiosity

  1. Those who make "I'm above trends" part of their personality, and feel the need to repeatedly mention it

Both groups seem to badly lack self confidence. I do have sympathy as lacking self confidence is something we all go through at different stages of our life, to different extents.

Lykia · 18/02/2023 19:52

I agree with you Op. I used to be an avid poster in S&B pre Covid, under a different name, and really enjoyed the posts and discovered lots of brands I'd never heard of before.

However, these days it's not as much fun anymore for the myriad of reasons posted above. It's seems you're not allowed to spend more than £20 on a jumper.

Also, I hate it when I see a S&B post in Active as I know it will descend into I just use an Aldi carrier bag for my overnight bag.

I no longer post but do occasionally lurk on the Les Parisiennes de MN. There are some really knowledgeable posters on that thread. You know who you are. Smile

And lastly, please MNHQ don't put S&B in Active as it kills the thread.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 18/02/2023 20:02

Interesting @Lykia how much has Covid changed how we use social media and how did Covid change fashion?

I've turned into a right jeans and jumper person, I keep saying when it warms up I'll wear more of my wardrobe.
Have others grown out of their wardrobe?
Has a large percentage moved to lounge wear?

wherearetheturtles · 18/02/2023 20:05

QuertyGirl · 18/02/2023 19:06

Is nobody bothered that "fashion" is being told what to wear by some marketing firm?

This isn't about how you look, it's conformity

Nope. Totally disagree with this.

I don't wear things purely because they're on trend. I enjoy looking at fashion mags, websites and seeing what's on the catwalks, then seeing how it filters down to the high street. I'll then pick out what particular items I like and then possibly purchase. Sometimes I see things that are "in" and think god no. I'm also only interested in a good cut, quality fabric. I wouldn't buy very cheap polyester copies of things.

How long ago?

I can vividly remember many "that's fucking hideous" responses to posts circa 10 years ago 😂

Iwasntgettingasandwich · 18/02/2023 20:23

I do mostly agree. It would be like going on a gardening thread and saying "why not just block pave it and hang up an artificial ivy?'

Iwasntgettingasandwich · 18/02/2023 20:29

But, I have found that on the s&b thread page you can go all the way back to 2005!

botemp · 18/02/2023 20:31

Wrt to Lykia's post, pre Covid S&B was one of the boards that was noticeably more affluent than the rest of the site. Covid probably didn't kill off that group probably only made them richer but I have found myself self censoring about pricier purchases as I'm not immune to seeing that a lot of people are struggling so it feels crass to discuss your own frivolous spending. I'm probably not alone in that and that may explain why it all seems like we can only chat about supermarket clothes or Vinted bargains now.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 18/02/2023 20:32

Even the Monty Don thread attracted a certain amount of "yuck, ugly expensive sack" comments.

Do we need a return of Edmontine Don?

Edmontine · 18/02/2023 21:00

👀

Why me?

I also disagree. Yes, a "marketing firm" can issue all the edicts they want about how we "should" dress, but if they've misjudged the mood of their audience at that moment, people won't buy and they'll have a lot of stock unshifted. That's what I find fascinating about trends, which ones catch on at which times and why.

NotMeNoNo · 18/02/2023 21:06

Because MN doesn't have a board for Clothes and Hygiene. Sometimes people want to discuss practicalities without getting carried away with this season's jeans or wonder balm.

NotMeNoNo · 18/02/2023 21:10

People need clothes, decent clothes, they don't necessarily need fashion to say those clothes are dated rubbish every three years.
I know that's how the fashion industry works but it's not doing a very good job of supplying us with clothing.

LimeCheesecake · 18/02/2023 21:14

Look, we aren’t all walking around in 1940s suits and slacks - so let’s not pretend we aren’t all following fashion somewhat. The “I never follow fashion, I wear what suits me” people rarely are dressed like an extra in Dallas/the sweeny /crossroads- so they have followed fashions, if not the most key item this season.

Hmm, my navy workwear slacks and sheep colour hand knit may disagree with you.

Chasedbythechaser · 18/02/2023 22:16

I agree with you OP.

Its wearying to read replies to specific questions saying Whatever you want' 'Who cares' 'Anybody who thinks about this stuff has a boring life'

If the person asking the question cares, then either give them the courtesy of helping them and if it isn't your thing, then move on to another thread.

Some my dresses wouldn't look out of place in the 1940s and many of them in the 1950s. Others are posh hippy Bloomsbury. One of my favourite coats is from the 1960s , another is late 1980s.

My husband was clearing out photos after my mother in law died and found a black and white photograph of her from the early 1950s wearing a dress which was virtually identical to one of my favourite every day dresses.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 18/02/2023 22:29

there used to be a time on S&B when 1950s style circle dresses were recommended all the time. I think Lady V was the brand.

vintage clothes of course being very fashionable.
