Sabotaging clothes with poor underwear

This keeps happening to me. I buy a nice dress which fits me well but my underwear is so obvious underneath it and that doesn't work for me as I prefer a more modest look. Example of a dress I've recently bought which turned out to be shockingly thin.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for your go to slips/camis etc as nude coloured underwear just isn't cutting it.

Fabric is getting thinner and thinner to cut costs, for the same reason nothing is lined any more. I'm in my fifties, in my twenties even basic clothes from M&S or next were lined.
These days I think you need to be replacing the lining with slips or petticoats. I like silk camisoles from Intimissimi as a treat, M&S full length slips for dresses. I will wear a silk long sleeve top and a waist slip under a dress if needed.
For me the key is having a range of different bottom layers so you've got a choice.
Everything hangs better with a thin layer of clothing underneath it.
(Back in the day we had petticoats for trousers! Haven't seen those in years)

A plain silk slip is good under anything, or any simple one really. If you get one with no lace at the neckline, then it doesn’t matter if it shows under a wrap dress etc.
i have a plain pale pink silk slip, and a viscose jersey slip in cream, and pale grey. Plus a black one. Those seem to cover all bases really !

The trouser liners were called Pettipants , I remember my cousin wearing them under culottes.

LadyEloise1 · 15/02/2023 19:24

M&S do great slips - full length and half slips in various different lengths.

DelphiniumBlue · 15/02/2023 19:26

I have M&S full slips in 3 different lengths, they come in black white and nude, they help dresses hang better particularly if you are wearing tights.

CMOTDibbler · 15/02/2023 19:50

It's the M&S microfibre slips every time for me- I have them in every length from cami to maxi, full and waist. They make everything look better and skim over undies or wobbly bits.

Agreeing with previous posters about M&S. When I wear an unlined dress I wear one of these or these under it.

I have several in different lengths, all in the nude shade.

I’m early thirties and have never considered wearing a slip but thinking maybe I should? How does it make stuff hang better? Maybe I need to give it a go 🤔

Yalz · 15/02/2023 20:38

@Valentinesquestion, if your dress has a waist seam it would be quite easy to attach a lining from there. I wouldn’t try to sew a lining to the top half as I’d just wear a slip, but it wouldn’t be impossible.

I suppose you could sew a purchased slip into a dress if that felt better for you. I’d put on the dress inside out, then the slip also inside out, and pin them together at strategic places on the top (eg shoulder seam, around the bottom of the armholes) where seams on the dress and the slip meet, and around the waist. Then take it all off carefully and catch (sew) them together at the pinned places.

Same here!! I sometimes wear those anti chaffing shorts in summer but never thought to wear a slip - and I guess that wouldn’t solve thigh chaf!

You might try a culotte slip - M&S might get them back in stock in the summer.

Definitely full slips. Really helps with skirts not sticking to tights/legs and as PP have said adds to the effect of smoothing over bumps eg your bra at the back. The M&S ones are good and lots of choice of lengths. The half slips (ie just a skirt) annoyed me and rode up around my waist.

Artemisty · 15/02/2023 20:51

@DownInTheDumpster I'm a recent convert to slips.
It does make things hang better - you don't get things flapping around your legs and it just gives you a smoother line.
I also like that it keeps you warmer!

Lightninginabox · 15/02/2023 20:53

I bought two cotton old school slips a couple of years ago and they are brill for under crap thin summer dresses.

drinkingcream · 15/02/2023 20:58

Oh I have never thought about this! Makes complete sense

QuietlyConfident · 15/02/2023 21:04

Yep, M&S full slips are the business. I mostly have shortish ones - black and nude - but you can get them in a variety of lengths. Game changer.

QuietlyConfident · 15/02/2023 21:06

Silk is lovely but microfibre can be shoved in the machine wash with your normal bio detergent.

reverseferreting · 15/02/2023 21:11

Links to the M&S slips has been very helpful, thank you. Anyone got links for the silk ones they like?

ChicoryDip · 15/02/2023 21:13

Another vote for the M&S slips - the cool comfort ones feel much nicer than the standard ones.

reverseferreting · 15/02/2023 21:22

Looking at the M&S ones for the dress I showed would you go for a nude colour or white?

OP posts:
JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 15/02/2023 21:22

A full slip under a dress, buy a nude one and it will go under anything. You may need a couple of lengths.

A camisole or vest under a see through shirt.

Yalz · 16/02/2023 09:39

I agree. Nude will show less, even under white.

reverseferreting · 16/02/2023 11:49

Thanks all, off to M&S soon.
