I'm going to a school reunion later and I have nothing to wear.

Due to life being shit and various mental health issues I've worn nothing but fat face tunics or dungarees since lockdown.

I've put on weight too so my old clothes don't fit.

I'm a now size 18 with big arse and legs.

It was touch and go whether I was going to go as everyone is quite rubbish at the moment but I've driver to fuck it and go.

I have time to buy a new outfit this afternoon but don't have much cash and only have access to a M&S, Next and Fatface at short notice.

The reunion is in a gastropub type place from 6. So not too smart but requires effort.

Please find me an outfit that does not make me look like a complete failure.

You say you have nothing to wear at the moment, but do you have any basics; a well-fitting pair of jeans or some black wide leg trousers etc, so you'd just need to add a nice top or do you need the full outfit?

Remember at a dinner you'll be sitting down most of the time, so a stylish top is what most people will see for 90% of the night.

Randobelia · 11/02/2023 10:38

Blazer, jeans, top or dress, tights and nice shoes. I would maybe go into Fatface and say to a sales assistant you need to buy an outfit, can they suggest anything and just try loads on. Get yourself a nice bag or accessory or something too! I think Fatface would have nice dresses.

Hopeishere52 · 11/02/2023 10:40

I ve felt a much like that myself recently and struggle to know what to wear. One thing I found was a blazer from marks and spencer …they are not too expensive and can smarten almost any look up..I had a navy one to wear with jeans.

fruitstick · 11/02/2023 10:42

I don't own any jeans. I keep telling myself I'll buy some when I lose some weight but that hasn't happened.

I have skinny jegging type things which I wear with tunic tops but I saw a photo of myself the other day and I look dreadful in them.

Dresses definitely suit me more than tops and trousers I think but wonder whether that's because I'm buying the wrong tops and trousers.

Then treat yourself to a well fitting pair of black and/or navy trousers.

Depending on your shape (& stock availability) wide leg or 3/4 length could be good.

The blazer idea is always good, heels,a great bra (good underwear can transform an outfit) and something with a V neckline.

If you can't find a top, a silk/satin shirt with a couple of buttons undone at the top (though if you end up going the shirt & blazer route you'd want to wear jeans so you don't look like you're off to a job interview!)

fruitstick · 11/02/2023 10:50

How about this?

I'll also attempt to try on some trousers but I find them difficult to fit.

SaltyGod · 11/02/2023 10:53

I really like that dress.

Do you have boots to wear with it? Or what shoes were you planning?

If you don't regularly wear jeans this probably isn't the time to be trying them again as it's the most frustrating thing to buy. Of course you might strike it lucky in M&S, and then add top and blazer and you'd done.

But if you're a dress lady, you might be more comfortable in a dress

I have doc martens to wear with tights but no boots. I tend to just wear my wellies 😬

I really don't get out much!

What about this? Easy to wear, you'll wear it through spring and summer with sandals. But tonight with tights, boots, maybe a nice necklace/fab earrings and put the effort into hair and make up?

Also lovely. This is giving me hope 😍

You could wear your docs with this ⬆️

SaltyGod · 11/02/2023 10:57

Doc martens and tights = perfect. Anything that makes you feel comfortable and happy is ideal.

I do like those trousers, and am a big fan of the wide leg, but it's very much a case of trial and error on the cut so you'd have to see what they're like on.

fluffiphlox · 11/02/2023 10:57

I’m no fashionista but don’t both of those fatface dresses say ‘I’ve given up’?

FfaCoffi · 11/02/2023 11:03

Is there anything you have at home that you could wear - how about footwear? Or is it a complete outfit from top to toe?

The navy dress you shared is lovely but a little plain on its own - do you have any jewelry to go with it?

If you need an outfit today, i'd get down there and just try everything on! If dresses suit you, aim for a dress IMO. Panic-buying probably isn't the right time to find new ways of dressing - do that when you have a bit of time, I reckon.

rockpoolingtogether · 11/02/2023 11:04

Going against the grain, I would go with what you are comfy in. Make it your style. So if it's dungarees then fine! Make an effort to have clean hair and decent makeup and focus on listening to others if you don't much feel like talking. You will be OK

FfaCoffi · 11/02/2023 11:05

Just seen you have Docs - brilliant! And that FatFace Adele dress would be great with them.

Can you get down to Fatface in your DMs and try on the dresses?

You could post pics here if you feel brave enough (you dont need to show your face)

I do have a couple of necklaces that would work with a low neck.

Shoes are an issue as I'll need to get public transport and really out of practice in heels.

I think a nice dress could be the way to go.

Love the fat face dress, much of wardrobe is fat face.

Have you got a larger Sainsbury's, tu clothes are good and reasonable

fruitstick · 11/02/2023 11:10

I DO have a Sainsbury’s. I always forget about that.

Luckingfovely · 11/02/2023 11:16

The Adele dress is much much nicer than the first one. I would definitely focus on finding a dress to wear with tights and docs. Trousers are hideously hard to get right and even more so if you're out of practice shopping and bigger than you want to be.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 11/02/2023 11:23

What about this from M&S? Same style in two different patterns - and crucially, it seems to be in stock in stores (although obviously I don’t know what store you’re heading for), whereas a lot of the dresses on the site seem to be online only:

And I’ve just seen you’ve got Docs - this has been styled with similar boots:
