When do you throw away blush / eyeshadow pallets ?

I have so many, I think even if I wore them everyday for the rest of my life I still wouldn't use up what I've got. It seems almost impossible to use up these pallets, which begs the question, when should you throw them away?

I have newer powders from advent calendars that I don't want to open because I have so many already on the go!

I get rid of anything that I never use.
Why not donate the unopened ones?

justasking111 · 07/02/2023 18:47

I donate unopened stuff to our women's refuge.

Erictheavocado · 07/02/2023 18:48

Are you talking about ones that you have opened and used, even if just once? I replace my eyeshadow palettes every three months and mascara every 8 weeks. Eyes are very susceptible to infection and however regularly the brushes are cleaned, the powder/mascara itself can harbour bacteria.
If unopened, I would keep if you think you might use them within a few months, otherwise I would see if anyone I knew would like them.

Grumpybutfunny · 07/02/2023 18:51

I chuck out the ones I have opened once I have used all the colours I like in them.

Dodecaheidyin · 07/02/2023 19:00

I'm still using an eyeshadow palette I got probably 35 or more years ago, with no problems.

I can understand mascara but replacing eyeshadows that often seems really wasteful. You’re not going anywhere near the surface of the eye or any mucous membranes with it so the chances are tiny.

I’ve only thrown away ones which have really aged and gone too dry and hard.

Hi, mum Wink She loves her original packaging Bourjois!

Tribollite · 07/02/2023 19:20

I throw them out when I've used up the colours I like. Which seems to take years! I have tons of them as well.

plumduck · 07/02/2023 19:21

You can kind of tell when they go off and don't perform right

No way?! That's mad. Don't think I've ever thrown anything away

Gufo · 07/02/2023 19:29

My naked 3 palette must be from 2015 and still going strong!

TroysMammy · 07/02/2023 19:34

I had a clear out the other day, eyeshadow bought on a whim (green) and others 10 years +. Tesco has a makeup recycling bin.

FallopianTubeTrain · 07/02/2023 19:34

When I've dropped them so many times on the bathroom floor that I have to admit they're too smashed to save.

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/02/2023 19:45

If I don't actually use it then I don't keep it regardless of age. I've never been one for an eyeshadow palette for that reason, I prefer simple makeup and don't find a palette represents good value for me.

I'd just bin the older stuff and use the newer ones you have, otherwise by the time you get around to those they'll be old and past best anyway. Just because you can get away with using something old doesn't mean you should aim to.

justasking111 · 07/02/2023 19:50

Our eye clinic see ulcerated eyes and ask about makeup. Especially mascara. Trust me you don't want ulcers

SpecialK2023 · 07/02/2023 19:52

I love eyeshadow palettes and will spend £60 on one. I know I’ve had some for 6 years or so, I’ve barely used them. No way would I throw them unless they seemed “off” I’ve never experienced eyeshadow or powder going off.

I’ve got a bronzer I’ve been using almost daily for 7 years and it’s still going strong - although nearly in need of replacement.

I do change mascaras

But are eyeshadows more forgiving

What about eyeliner?

I work in an eye clinic and I'm yet to see eyeshadow cause an ulcer!

I'll ask, I'm at the clinic next week. They're emphatic about mascara though.

Mind you they're not so keen on contact lenses once you've had an ulcer

Rebel2023 · 07/02/2023 20:28

I change mascaras often
Eyeshadow.. if it smells funny or looks funny
I'm still using an ABH modern renaissance palette and that's from 2016
I did bin an urban decay one as the texture felt wrong and the eyeshadow just smelled not quite right

Rebel2023 · 07/02/2023 20:28

And I couldn't afford to replace them every 3 months! I have maybe 60 palettes BlushGrin

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/02/2023 20:31

I don't use mascara, never needed it, but I have an eye shadow palette that might need replacing. I swear it didn't have a lot of fall down at first, but now it's getting silly. Then again, I've only had it for a couple of years or so, it feels too premature o get rid of it. Grin

Fuckingfuckssake · 07/02/2023 20:31

Please don't bin them either way, Tesco have make up recycling bins and Boots have a scheme for all beauty/toiletries/hard to recycle items where you get points for bringing bits in, even toothpaste tubes. It's called Scan2recycle.

Use this regularly but they ask for the things to be empty so tricky sometimes with eyeshadow etc
