Is this a party dress or ok for work event?

I love this dress but I'm not sure if it's too dressy for a work event. I will have to wear it during the day in the office before the event and I don't want to look like I am heading straight off for cocktails after! The event itself is a product launch and I am there as a guest but will probably be helping handing out drinks, hobnobbing etc. The men are expected to wear suits and ties (there has been no mention of what the women are supposed to wear!). I would be wearing black tights and shoe boots with it.

I think it’s pretty casual! I wouldn’t at an eye at someone wearing it to work on a normal day tbh

faffadoodledo · 07/02/2023 12:56

Gosh I was expecting sequins and a slit up the leg. But this is perfectly acceptable!

fantasmasgoria1 · 07/02/2023 12:57

To me it's not particularly dressy. It's casual. It's nice enough.

GetOffMyDoorJack · 07/02/2023 13:15

Ha, thanks for your replies 😂I'm very much a "jeans and a nice top" type when I go out, not really a dress person at all! But the sexist implication is that while the men wear suits and ties the ladies will wear a nice dress.

Definitely wouldn't call it dressy.

Totally fine for work

purplecorkheart · 07/02/2023 13:21

I think the dress is fine for what you want to wear it for.

CountryCousin · 07/02/2023 13:27

I’d go against the sexist implication and wear a trouser suit.

(Not keen on your frock, sorry, but it’s perfectly appropriate. Assuming your male colleagues’s suits will be from M&S rather than bespoke Anderson & Shepphard?)

CountryCousin · 07/02/2023 13:28

(Colleagues’ - not the nonsense my phone preferred.)

LadyKenya · 07/02/2023 13:29

It just looks like a run of the mill, casual dress.

BettyBoo123456 · 07/02/2023 13:32

Its definitely not OTT or stand out and ok especially if its a step change from your usual attire. I was expecting something much more controversial.

fluffiphlox · 07/02/2023 13:32

Rather dull in my view and I’m ancient.

MusicWithRocksIn · 07/02/2023 13:33

I really like it but I'd say if anything it's too casual! The sort of thing I'd wear to the office or on a typical non working day - school run, coffee shop, supermarket etc.

Laurdo · 07/02/2023 13:34

I'd say that's pretty casual to be honest.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 07/02/2023 13:36

That's the most normal looking dress I've ever seen 😂

Here's me thinking it was gonna look like this 😂😂😂

MusicWithRocksIn · 07/02/2023 13:36

If you do decide to buy it you'd better hurry up as some sizes are sold out and others only have one (I was tempted myself but I don't want to order the last 14 in case that's your size!)

This is not an appropriate cocktail dress. It’s a church dress. It’s not dressy enough.

Wear your normal work attire to work and get changed into a cocktail dress at the end of the day.

I had to go to quite a few corporate events when I worked as a consultant. I always wore a structured suit dress (obviously different dresses). These were often black and lined and the high heels were appropriate for the office and for cocktails.

Often these dresses were sleeveless, but they sometimes had sleeves.

You can’t possibly wear that dress. If the men are wearing suits and ties you will look ridiculous dressed from Little House on the Prairie. I implore you to dress appropriately.

Cocktail dress attire is very simple for women. It’s the easiest not to stuff up! It means you wear a fitted dress that finishes before the knees and high heels. You could wear a dress skirt and top if the fabric is fancy. But you can’t wear a cocktail dress to work as you will look ridiculous.

Wear your normal clothes to work and buy a little black dress. You can wear this dress to multiple events and is an investment.

MsFogi · 07/02/2023 14:03

Looks like a casual (weekend) dress to me. No one will bat an eye at you wearing that at the office/out/anywhere other than a formal event OP.

CountryCousin · 07/02/2023 14:30

I understood the OP to be saying it was not a cocktail event? Just something a bit more formal than a normal day.

And surely if her employment involved high status dressing she would know that and have chosen something more in keeping with the work culture?

(Only a minority of people in the UK go to church, so it’s not the most helpful reference. And those I know who do attend church tend to wear everyday jeans and coat.)

Haver74 · 07/02/2023 16:35

Please don't wear that. It looks like something my 80 year old mother would pick out for me (not that she would ever be given the chance!)

It’s far too casual. Trouser suits are very in for women, wear one of those if you like. I wouldn’t wear this dress to a work event in a million years.

Cornelious2011 · 07/02/2023 16:39

The dress is ok in some of the colours but it's quite hippy casual. I don't think I'd wear it to a work event.

The OP's work event isn't a cocktail dress type affair though! If men will be in suits and ties, the women will be in work dresses - definitely not a cocktail dress!

OP - you won't look like you're going for cocktails after, but it may possibly be too casual for your work event? I assume you know the sort of thing the women usually wear to these things, and I'd stick to that.

Same - for a normal casual day in the office. But I would expect to wear something smarter for any kind of work 'event' (client meetings, public event, conference etc). A suit dress or similar from somewhere like Hobbs is usually my go to.

thesnailandthewhale · 07/02/2023 16:49

Looks casual and rather frumpy, sorry!
