Is this a party dress or ok for work event?

I love this dress but I'm not sure if it's too dressy for a work event. I will have to wear it during the day in the office before the event and I don't want to look like I am heading straight off for cocktails after! The event itself is a product launch and I am there as a guest but will probably be helping handing out drinks, hobnobbing etc. The men are expected to wear suits and ties (there has been no mention of what the women are supposed to wear!). I would be wearing black tights and shoe boots with it.

I know it's not an attack on me, and even if it was, I'm big enough and ugly enough to cope.

You can't possibly know if a dress would be ill-fitting or unflattering on the OP. If you think it's old fashioned, fine, but some people don't care about fashion, or can determine if they like something whether or not 'fashion' dictates that they should or shouldn't.

But I can see with my own two eyes it is ill fitting and unflattering on the model wearing it. That’s what I am basing my comments on.

This is a perfectly acceptable day to evening dress anywhere but Mumsnet.

I got a totally different dress the second time I clicked on the link.

navy is horrid
black is absolutely fine/

this thread is hilarious

WonderingWanda · 07/02/2023 20:08

I would put a blazer over that for a work event op.

Quartz2208 · 07/02/2023 20:09

What does the navy dress look like as surely the comments must be about that and not the actual sress

Personally I wouldn’t wear it to work. It’s more of a ‘do the gardening and pop to the supermarket’ kind of dress. There are so many nice dresses out there!

Omg . Is this for real ? 😂.

I garden in bright pink crocs, black leggings and a hoody and I wouldn't pop to the shops in them !
I'm clearly well out of the fashion loop because I'd wear that dress for a night out , a lunch date - not gardening 😂.

I think I need to up my game in terms of gardening and pop to the shops attire clearly . I pop to the shops in my oodie or my pjs and throw a coat over , if my hairs greasy I stick a hat on but not one that could be worn for ascot ladies day - a woolly pom pom - and uggs .

Shoot me now .

Where are people seeing a blue/navy dress? The dress is black with a gold pattern.

sonjadog · 07/02/2023 20:15

I think it would be suitable for the kind of occasion you are describing (the black and gold one, that is).

MysteryBelle · 07/02/2023 20:25

I love the dress. Looks very nice for work and then the event afterward. Great choice. The metallic is the only thing that could be considered not workwear-like but because of how it’s designed it looks appropriate. The ruffle at bottom hints at a somewhat casual vibe but again, it’s still appropriate. And it will transition into the evening. I’d say it’s perfect.

Ihatepcos · 07/02/2023 20:39

As others have said, looks like a normal, casual work dress. Not something to wear to an event.

Jumbojem · 07/02/2023 20:40

I like the dress and I think it looks perfectly acceptable for the event you describe if you wear decent tights footwear, jewellery etc.
I don't know why everyone's commenting on what they think of the dress. OP has already said she loves it and only asked if it was suitable for the event she outlined.
As for whoever said they'd wear it gardening pffft! Bend over to do some weeding and everyone would be looking at your pants, ridiculous!

It is perfectly fine for wearing in the office through to the evening.

I've never been to a product launch but I've been to a few book launches and that dress would be suitable for that.

30flirtyandthrivingx · 07/02/2023 20:51

I don't like the dress but it's just personal preference. I'd probably go for either something shorter with bare legs or knee length and fitted, again with bare legs. If I wanted to cover my legs I'd wear a jumpsuit or wide leg trousers and a nice satin shirt. I wouldn't wear tights to a dressy event but again it's personal preference.

I couldn't imagine having bare legs at a dressy event !

I'm not 100% sure what the OP was describing is going to be a "dressy event" or a "not scruffy event"

For any evening client do I've ever been at, including book launches, the dress code is smart unless very formal black tie is specified.

The OP hasn't been back. I hope she's not put off from what is a pretty and useful dress by some of the ridiculous comments on here.

Eyerollcentral · 07/02/2023 21:02

Much more useful would be a v in, v useful trouser suit. For a woman who goes out in jeans and a top usually this is not the dress for OP full stop and it’s not appropriate for a work event being neither one thing or another. I hope the OP’s got some good ideas for something that she feels confident and comfortable in.

Bankofrave · 07/02/2023 21:02

That is not a going out dress or a formal dress or even a work dress unless you are a social worker (sorry! 😂)

Its like something you might wear to go and get chips after a day at the beach

I’ll be honest I have never seen a single item I like from Fat Face it’s all so stretchy and patterny it doesn’t scream style.

Go to John Lewis and ask the personal shopper team to help you out.

30flirtyandthrivingx · 07/02/2023 21:03

@NatashaDancing You need to calm down 😂

Mouthfulofquiz · 07/02/2023 21:04

@hellobethyname
I’ve just clicked on the link again and it’s showing a different dress!! The one it’s showing now is lovely (gold and black) and is deffo not a gardening and supermarket dress!

Bankofrave · 07/02/2023 21:04

Oh hang on I take it back! It loaded a totally different dress for me the first time I clicked!

I saw a jersey knee length white and blue sack. Now it’s black and gold.

Ok I see more where you are coming from and think it has potential ish but there are definfely better options out there.

go black trousers and a crisp white top

Glad it’s not just me! Did you get the ditzy print blue and white jersey number? Couldn’t work out what the OP was thinking!

???

Have you read the comments? "It's only fit for gardening"

RuthW · 07/02/2023 21:07

That's fine. I'd wear it for work normally. I work in an office.

The OP will look like a hired waiter in "black trousers and a crisp white top"

Mouthfulofquiz · 07/02/2023 21:08

@Bankofrave yep - blue and white jersey with a boat neck!
