and now have cord, wool and velvet for winter.
Would you do the same?
Silk and linen for summer, in case this is relevant.

I’m nearly 60 and still wear jeans a lot.
I can imagine by 70 I might stop wearing them, but we’ll see!

Why stop at 70? Genuine question.

AuntieMarys · 09/02/2023 08:00

I'm 63 and wear jeans most days. I don't possess a dress or skirt.

Kanaloa · 09/02/2023 08:02

I wear jeans because they’re comfy and practical. Realistically velvet trousers are not practical if you have a physically active and busy day.

But if someone else wants to/doesn’t want to wear them I don’t really care. The one thing I don’t get is the age limit. I don’t wear high heels. They’re not comfy and I don’t like them. But I wouldn’t make myself wear them till 50 then give them up. Why wear jeans that you apparently dislike until age 50?

Jeans are a dark closed environment. Denim is a horrible material. Stiff, unyielding , too cold in winter and too hot in summer and desperately uncomfortable all year round.

If your jeans are desperately uncomfortable I imagine you aren’t wearing the right size or style. And what are you wearing that’s warmer than jeans?

They don’t/shouldn’t cause thrush either, unless, as I said above, you are wearing the wrong size and they’re far too tight in the crotch, causing you to sweat etc.

Floisme · 09/02/2023 08:12

Fashion questions aside, I've found denim to be great for ageing bodies. It adds a bit of shape and structure to counteract loss of tone. I've never understood the love for linen trousers as an alternative - beautiful fabric but way too droopy unless you buy very high end. My arse is quite saggy enough on its own thanks.

Never. Cord and wool would make me feel and look chunky, and velvet would look eccentric in Tesco. Linen looks like a crumpled rag and silk looks like pajamas on me. I'm 53 and love jeans and even worse, high waist skinnies! They're comfy and suit my figure.

You’re my Jean Sister … I love my high waisted skinnies too! Look great rolled up slightly with trainers/ankle boots or with knee highs. Added bonus - great silhouette and butt lift 😬 I’m nearly 60 🤪

TheRealHousewife · 09/02/2023 08:27

I forgot to add @FelicityFlops I also have velvet, cord, linen, silk slub etc too. Horses for course 😬

Whydoitry · 09/02/2023 08:30

I love jeans and can't imagine giving them up, I wear them a lot. Almost never wear anything else in winter.

Having said that, at 42 I've had a huge change in the fabrics I buy. Far fewer synthetics. Jumpers now are merino or cashmere, dresses are cotton, linen or silk.

Then again I was also convinced a few years ago that Phoebe Philo was going to sign for Marks and Spencers so what do I know

That would have been brilliant!

Really hope that your premonition was just premature and that this could happen one day.

It was a specific time when Philo wasn't working, had a young family (so might prefer to be UK based) and was talking about seeking fresh challenges, new directions and yada yada yada. Sadly I think the moment has now passed!

GettingStuffed · 09/02/2023 08:49

I gave up jeans in my 30s and at the age of 58 I discovered mom jeans which solve all my issues with jeans, and TBH most fabrics right against my legs

middleager · 09/02/2023 08:54

I'm 50 and have never really worn jeans because I'm short, chubby, with a flat arse and big stomach. I haven't owned a pair of jeans since I was 13.
They are bloody uncomfortable.

I actually have thin legs and wear beggings or elasticated waists. Nothing with a button or zip.
Dresses and skirts? Now I can do those.

LaMarschallin · 09/02/2023 08:54

Oh, I see.
Rats.

Ahh well, I'll just leave these Lerner & Lowe lyrics here to contemplate on what could have been:

"Don’t let it be forgot that once there was a spot
For one brief shining moment that was known as... Camelot"

Because I feel it could have been.

Floisme · 09/02/2023 09:05

It would have been perfect LaMarschallin - for Philo, for M&S, for Britain... unfortunately I seemed to be the only one who could see it Sad

I haven't worn jeans in over 30 years. I don't like them. I don't want to wear them. They are the world's dullest item of clothing, and almost no one looks good in them.

Don’t wear them then 🤷‍♀️ but you didn’t say it was because they were dull, you said it was because they are desperately uncomfortable and give you thrush. I was just saying jeans shouldn’t be desperately uncomfortable and cause thrush unless they don’t fit you.

LiverpoolMuse · 09/02/2023 09:23

When you say jeans, do you mean the blue denim ones, or all the colours, would you wear yellow or white ones. I gave up. Wearing blue denim years ago because I got bored with them, I wear different colours though as they are so practical.

Tirednest · 09/02/2023 09:34

Getting thrush from jeans is bizarre. Unless you are wearing sweaty pants and sprayed on jeans. My jeans are cotton and very comfy.

Uncomfortable and dull. And cold. Denim is terrible in cold weather.

Just because you wear ill fitting jeans and look awful and dull in them doesn't mean everyone does.

I've seen plenty of people look terrible in dull dresses and tights or wool "tailored trousers" or whatever and plenty looking fabulous in jeans.

it's called personal preference.

ThisWOMANWontWheesht · 09/02/2023 10:03

I’m 54 and got back into jeans in the last couple of years. There seemed to be a period of about 15 straight years where the only jeans available were skinny, which didn’t suit me at all. Now I have several pairs of nice new non-skinny jeans. I walk for 1.5 hours every day (have dog) whatever the weather, and I don’t agree that they’re not warm enough.

My DMIL wore a lot of expensive jeans, right into her eighties, often with a nice blouse or cashmere jumper. She made them look very glamorous!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/02/2023 10:09

Jeans keep me warmer than tights.

Jeand are made from cotton which isn’t insulating. However the twill weave makes them windproof to some extent.

l have to wear 2 pairs of tights to make my legs warm enough. Then l feel like a Tomliboo

Awumminnscotland · 09/02/2023 10:26

I'm the same as pp. About 10 years there where I couldn't find any jeans that fit and suited me. Have just bought 2 pairs of mid rise bootcut jeans one 'cosy' ( kind of brushed cotton) on the inside and one pair darker and smarter. I'm probably going to invest in a couple more pairs soon as I can see myself living in them.
They feel great on, and I feel good in them, more like myself again!

Kanaloa · 09/02/2023 10:33

NatashaDancing · 09/02/2023 09:40

Right, but I was responding to your claim that they are ‘desperately uncomfortable’ and cause thrush. If your jeans fit correctly they should not be desperately uncomfortable and will certainly not cause thrush. If you simply find them dull or require warmer clothes (struggling to think of what trousers would be significantly warmer than jeans) then obviously that’s just personal taste.

RubiesandRose · 09/02/2023 11:37

My mum is 85 and still wearing topshop skinnies and knee high boots with a low heel, she looks fabulous! I don't think there are rules, just what you like and what you feel comfortable in!

Like I said, we’ll see how I feel when I’m older. May stop, may not 😁
