I gave up jeans at 50

and now have cord, wool and velvet for winter.
Would you do the same?
Silk and linen for summer, in case this is relevant.

I'd never wear silk or linen trousers. I don't iron, so I'd just look like an ummade bed. I have a lovely silk shirt that doesn't need ironed if line dried, so I am not agin silk, but in general it all sounds far faffier than pulling on my trusty jeans.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/02/2023 08:50

I’m 59, and wear jeans neatly everyday. Second cord and velvet making me look chunky, and also they wear out easily.

Solk is actually an insulating fabric and can be warm to wear. Not mad for linen, creases like mad.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2023 08:50

How on earth would I climb trees in wood/cord/velvet? They'd get ruined.

Firkinhavinalaugh · 07/02/2023 08:50

Age is just a number - my 81 1/2 mother wears jeans and looks fab :)

JJ456 · 07/02/2023 08:52

I hate jeans shivers feels like wearing cardboard. Mine are all gone!

RegainingTheWill2023 · 07/02/2023 08:52

How bizarre to make "not wearing jeans" a thing to boast about 🙄
Wear what you like. I can't make a link between age and fabric that would necessitate ceasing to wear jeans.

PeskyRooks · 07/02/2023 08:53

If I only wore cord or velvet trousers I'd have to permanently carry a lint roller around in my back pocket for all the cat hair and bits that seem to gravitate towards me! Not a problem with jeans.

I am partial to a maxi skirt though. I'm 47.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 07/02/2023 08:54

I stopped wearing jeans at 22. They are hideous on me and never ever fit properly. In fact I don't wear trousers at all (unless leggings for exercise).

HeadNorth · 07/02/2023 08:55

I don't get the 'jeans feel like cardboard' comments - mine don't?

Back in the day, when they didn't have elastane, we used to sit in the bath to shrink them, then lie on our back with a wire coat hanger to zip them up - yup, that wasn't comfortable. But modern jeans are stretchy and soft.

Divebar2021 · 06/02/2023 21:12

I wouldn’t give up anything because of my age - if someone implied I’m too old for something I’d go and buy multiple versions of them to make a point.

😂 same. They'll be prising my denim skinnies off my cold, hard body.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 07/02/2023 09:04

I only tend to wear soft jeans, like loose jegging types, although I have got some nice flares. I struggle to move away from jeans, I don't look good at all in wide legged anything, I quite like a slim black trouser at a push. My 'uniform' (black top under loose jacket/slacket, blouse) for want of a better word always includes jeans!

MorrisZapp · 07/02/2023 09:10

I come from a jeans family. My mum still wears them most days, she's 76.

Mine act like a comfortable corset for my thighs, hips and stomach. If I give up jeans how will I know what size I am?

Mischance · 07/02/2023 09:12

I still wear jeans and I am ......... let's just say quite a bit more than 50! Smile

I wear them because they are comfortable and go with anything. hey are actually boot leg jeggings and I have 3 pairs plus a black pair. I have forgotten when I last wore a skirt/dress.

Mindymomo · 07/02/2023 09:18

I stopped wearing jeans around 40 and started again when the bootleg ones came in. It’s about finding the right ones for my shape, which isn’t easy.

LynneBenfield · 07/02/2023 09:19

Silk trousers/skirts in summer? Do you spend a fortune on dry cleaning or forever hand washing?

I don’t live in jeans but I do own and wear them. They are practical for my lifestyle, I have working dogs and spend a lot of time scrambling about in prickly undergrowth so need thick fabric on my legs.

I only wear silk trousers occasionally but I've never hand washed them. They're fine in the machine on a delicates cycle.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/02/2023 14:56

I've worn jeans since I was old enough to choose my own clothes!
I'm now 58 and still wear them daily
Skinnies no less
I like the firm feeling of jeans and have never worn joggers or leggings

TollgateDebs · 07/02/2023 15:13

Odd question and wondered if this is market research for one of those articles that makes generalisations about age and style.

Same here - I machine wash everything, including wool school blazers. My finances don't stretch to dry cleaning. Silk goes on a delicates cycle and doesn't need ironing.

I gave jeans up when I was about 22. They are uncomfortable and look awful on most people, regardless of age.

My wardrobe consists of cashmere, wool, cotton, linen and a bit of corduroy. I don't wear trousers at all - always skirts and dresses.

I got to 31 but otherwise agree with you.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/02/2023 21:39

Can l ask how all you dress wearers cope with horrible, itchy, thrush creating/falling down tights? And how do you keep your legs warm? No thermal tight is warm enough for me, and l can’t wear wool.

I'm interested in where to find iron free silk trousers for summer, being a non ironer myself!

I think that's difficult if you can't wear wool. Have you tried silk long johns under wool tights or leggings, or can you not wear that either? In cold weather I tend to wear silk long johns with one or two pairs of wool leggings on top, if I am wearing a skirt or dress. Or I wear Falke soft merino tights which are cotton lined, with an extra pair of wool leggings on top of it is cold. I hate synthetic tights and wouldn't wear them. I have a few pairs of knitted cotton tights that are OK if it's not too cold, Falke make some and I also have some from White Stuff.

Good question! I haven't worn tights since I was at school because I loathe them and am all in favour of a breathable foof. I wear opaque stockings/hold-ups or M&S knee-length heatgen thermal socks (very soft and warm - not wool). If it's really, really cold, I wear M&S heatgen thermal leggings under a dress/skirt too.

ImWearingReallyJudgyPants · 07/02/2023 22:05

@netcam I only have two pairs of trousers as I just don't like trousers - but I they are wide-legged silk pairs from Jigsaw (bought about 5 years ago).
