and now have cord, wool and velvet for winter.
Would you do the same?
Silk and linen for summer, in case this is relevant.

While I wear silk, velvet, wool and cord trousers, a lot of the time I am in jeans. I don’t understand the comments about feeling stiff, there are so many fabrics and styles to choose. Since lockdown I have gravitated towards designer offerings as I’m spending less on office wear. I wouldn’t wear jeans to the office apart from a Friday with no external meetings, and nowadays would probably be WFH.

Agree with @TollgateDebs sounds like an article - two in the past week in The Times, how to shop for jeans over 40 and am I too old to wear the new big jeans trend. Personally, I wear what I want and think it depends on your size and shape rather than your age on choosing what fits and suits your lifestyle, e.g. I wouldn’t recommend my Frame Le Palazzo to those who are short / short inside leg as you would fall down stairs /trip, whereas I can wear them barefoot.

I only wear whispers and echoes. Anything else just isn't elitist enough for mr.

😅

It’s the close fitting nylon environment that causes thrush! Not cotton jeans.

I've never had thrush wearing a dress or skirt, even with tights. I did with jeans.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/02/2023 17:12

But tights are nylon tight fitting and not breathable. This is what creates thrush. A dark enclosed environment.

Jeans are a dark closed environment. Denim is a horrible material. Stiff, unyielding , too cold in winter and too hot in summer and desperately uncomfortable all year round.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/02/2023 17:21

But they are made of cotton which is breathable. My jeans are soft and loose.

Stickytreacle · 08/02/2023 17:33

You'd have to prise my jeans from my cold dead hands. I love my jeans, they are so practical, I can wear them for gardening, dog walking, hopping on a horse, and for days out, dressed up or down. I'm 58 and have no intention of giving them up. My mum's 83 and still wears them.

I must be imagining having had thrush when I wore jeans (I'm not- so I don't know what your posts are supposed to achieve)

I have this hunch that we might be seeing the beginning of the end for jeans as a fashion item. It doesn't mean I think they're about to disappear from the high street, just that their grip over everything else we wear - shoes, jackets etc might be loosening. Nothing lasts forever and the fact that there's no longer a single jeans style dominating fashion plus the way jeans and a nice top aren't quite the failsafe night out outfit they were a few years ago both suggest that to me.

Then again I was also convinced a few years ago that Phoebe Philo was going to sign for Marks and Spencers so what do I know.

But to answer the op, at 66 I'm wearing them as much as I ever did but I just see them as a trusted and reliable basic, nothing more and nothing less.

Shunkleisshiny · 08/02/2023 18:03

My eldest sister is 86, I have been going to her house to help her declutter ( at her request)
Yesterday I moved onto her wardrobe,
6 pairs of blue denim
7 pairs of grey denim
5 pairs of black denim
2 pair of white denim
1 pair of beige denim

My sister swears she wears them all, and she is quite stylish in a Mary Berry sort of way, but 21 pairs of jeans is just bonkers!
That's just the thin end of the wedge, in all I counted 44 pairs of trousers. 44. pairs. of. trousers.

It's going to be a long month.

MavisFlump · 08/02/2023 18:05

I’m nearly 70 and I wear whatever I like! I’m beyond caring whether I’m fashionable or not; I wear jeans, cords, tights with long skirtts and so far I’ve avoided frightening the horses and anything else 😊

Jeans symbolise the increasing informality of society. I used to lecture history of fashion. It’s about anthropology.

Unless society becomes more formal l doubt jeans will disappear. Although they may be replaced by jog pants.

FelicityFlops · 08/02/2023 18:29

We never really wore jeans, growing up, so I probably bought my first pair in the 6th form or as a student. I just got to 50 and thought, no. I am considerably older than that now.
I have gone with styles that suit me, so I don't think the materials are frumpy.
FWIW I am a slim 8 to 10, but not revealing my age ;-)

To be clear I don't think they'll disappear either. I'm more wondering / pontificating about whether they'll carry on dominating fashion and dictating most other trends like they have in the recent past. I might be proved wrong and feel free to point and laugh if I am. I've just got a feeling about them.

SlipSlidinAway · 08/02/2023 22:59

In my 60s and live in jeans. Or maybe cargo trousers in the summer if it's very hot. Retired, live rurally, lots of gardening and dog-walking. Nothing else will do!

The workwear in my office has not , with a few exceptions, recovered from the dropping of formal clothes since lockdown but interestingly one of the smartest dressers is the 19 year old junior . She wears mostly dresses - ditzy floral knee length, or black wool sweater/tunic dresses and knee length cardigans / jackets, occasionally tailored trousers but never jeans. She looks great.

I did that too. I was 51. I looked around me and thought how many people over 50 looked good in jeans and the answer was none of them. Taylored trousers, wool, linen, cotton and silk pants look great.

Cantonet · 09/02/2023 05:48

I've fallen back in love with jeans at 58.
Namely Nrby jersey lined jeans.Soft, loose, boyfriend style plus the perfect washed denim colourway. I also love button fronted jeans, worn slightly slouchy - inspired by free people styling & m&s barrel jeans. I dislike skinnys & the slim straight ones, as they're too tight & restrictive.

That would have been brilliant!

Really hope that your premonition was just premature and that this could happen one day.

whiteroseredrose · 09/02/2023 06:12

The opposite of me. At 50 I stopped wearing anything else. I wear jeans or pyjamas and that's it. But I'm not interested in clothes so it makes my life easy.

Great for smart, going out or work wear, utterly ridiculous for every day wear.

lots of people over 50 look great in jeans. We aren't some homogenous group of people who are all the same shape and size living the same lifestyle. It's just ridiculous.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 09/02/2023 07:50

I’m 56 and recently lost two stone, I am delighted to be able to wear jeans again that look nice. You’re never too old for a nice pair of denims.

even better, bootleg are back in, I bloody love bootleg jeans, they suit my leg shape so much better than other jeans.

echt · 09/02/2023 07:51

Umberto Eco had some things to say about jeans in this short essay, Lumbar Thought.

I gave them up in lockdown. Joggers all the way for me now - you can get smart ones for leaving the house. I've given all my jeans away apart from a pair of skinny black ones.
