Tiffany necklace or something else

It’s my DD’s 18th birthday soon. I’d like to get her something that she can keep.
I’ve been looking at the Tiffany necklaces, the return to Tiffany hearts, that are around £280.

She knows the Tiffany brand so would appreciate a piece.

But I’m also thinking are they a bit naff?
Her birth stone is diamond, so could buy her her first piece of diamond jewellery.

Am also considering having my late Mum’s engagement ring checked for the stone being a diamond and if so, having the stone set into a silver locket.

Any thoughts please? Budget is £300.

Did you see the recent Tiffany thread. The consensus was that their stuff is naff and is aimed at the masses who can’t afford their premium products. Upto you though.

OatFox · 29/01/2023 15:08

Don't buy the cheap Tiffany options. They're not great quality.

Invest in a diamond piece like you're planning or source a second hand diamond ring to keep forever.

KangarooKenny · 29/01/2023 15:09

My DD likes her Tiffany necklaces, I’d buy them over Pandora any day.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 29/01/2023 15:09

I think the idea of having the diamond from her grandmother's engagement ring incorporated into a new piece of jewellery is a beautiful idea. If you do some research into jewellers local to you who offer this service I'm sure you'll find someone.

Shallysally · 29/01/2023 15:11

@Shitfather ah no I didn’t, thanks for the heads up!

@OatFox that’s my concern, the quality. I’d rather get her something that looks a bit sturdier for longevity.

@KangarooKenny ah does she? I’m pretty sure my DD would love one too

Im not a fan of Tiffany, I had some earrings and they have tarnished terribly - at the end of the day they are only silver. I think the piece of grandmas jewellery idea is really special

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 29/01/2023 15:12

I don't love the 'return to Tiffany's' heart stuff. But I have a plain silver bracelet from Tiffany's that I've had for 25 years or so that I absolutely love. So I certainly don't think everything Tiffany's is naff.

Shitfather · 29/01/2023 15:12

It’s worth a read. Other posters mentioned that it was easy to source good fakes. Get her something authentic and memorable.

Shallysally · 29/01/2023 15:12

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches thank you. There is a jewellers locally who offer this service. I’m going to contact them tomorrow, just for an approximate quote.

I have the return to Tiffany stuff (real) I agree now it's now a bit nagging and everywhere but I do still wear the bracelet for sentimental reasons

I now wear quite a bit of Monica Vineda and had a lovely Alex monroe necklace I had at Christmas

Slimjimtobe · 29/01/2023 15:13

Is go for the Alex Monroe bee necklace

have you seen it? It’s really pretty

Shinyandnew1 · 29/01/2023 15:14

I quite like some of the Tiffany bits, actually-but prefer the open heart to the ‘return to’ stuff.

Having a family diamond set into a silver heart sounds really lovely though! Can you let us know what sort of price you are quoted?

NeedToKnow101 · 29/01/2023 15:15

Or for something different to the diamond idea www.louisewade.com/collections/necklaces-1

Shallysally · 29/01/2023 15:17

@Shinyandnew1 yes of course I will!

@Slimjimtobe thanks, I’ll go and have a look

@FredaFox thanks, I’ll have a look at Monica Vinder

The Bowie necklace is 😍

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/01/2023 15:53

I've got a 'cheap' Tiffany necklace that I absolutely love this one - but according to Mumsnet that probably makes me as common as muck and quite possibly with a negative IQ score too.

I think the Alex M bees are lovely, but more for middle aged women than teenagers.

The granny's diamond idea is lovely, but I'd only do that if you asked her what she'd like. Too much money/sentimentality to get it wrong.

NameChangedForThissss · 29/01/2023 15:57

I’d go for the Tiffany necklace. I think she’ll love to get a little blue box for her 18th.
I have a silver charm bracelet and lots of charms in silver and some in Tiffany blue.

Shallysally · 29/01/2023 16:05

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I really like that necklace! I’ve discounted it she has a similar one from Pandora though.

She is a sentimental soul, I’ll have a think about asking her.

@NameChangedForThissss is your bracelet a Tiffany one please?

NameChangedForThissss is your bracelet a Tiffany one please?
Yes and I have a handbag, Tiffany bag, shoe and ice skate charm. I also have the bracelet in gold but no charms, I did think about collecting them but they are very expensive.

NameChangedForThissss · 29/01/2023 16:25

I forgot , I also have a silver necklace with two keys, one blue and one silver. The keys can be worn on the charm bracelet. I got a lot of it for my 40th and my DH went through a phase of buying a new charm each christmas.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/01/2023 16:30

If you ask her , would she prefer your Mums ring as it is ?
If you remodel an older item I think (might be wrong) you 'lose' the hallmark as it need to be re-hallmarked to present date ?

She could have it resized and wear as a Right Hand Ring then it's something she could wear every day and might even use as her own engagement ring .

I have my Nanas engagement ring , it needs a clean but only fits on my middle finger an I'd need a thin band as well to stop it slipping off if my hands get cold ,

(My DD is 20 , she wouldn't wear Tiffany or Pandora )

caringcarer · 29/01/2023 16:35

I'd get gold rather than silver. If she likes the silver colour go for white gold or platinum. Silver looks a bit cheap.

Anonmousse · 29/01/2023 16:55

I'm a jeweller and I wouldn't say Tiffany jewellery is naff because it's personal taste , and I know its a recognised and loved brand, but I do think it's very expensive for what you get (I know jewellery is generally expensive! But theirs seems a lot for what is essentially mass produced silver jewellery)

If you would like your mother's diamond set into something else, I would recommend 9ct white gold over silver. Silver is very soft and not usually used to set diamonds, and will tarnish more quickly. Maybe get an approximate price for both? A spectacle set pendant with chain similar to the pic, might be do-able in 9ct. Probably not as wow as some of the others but maybe more sentimental.
