Are European women better groomed & better dressed than British women?

Following two interesting threads & posters are saying that the Dutch & German woman are impeccably groomed & dressed. The "scruffy toff with I untidy hair covered in dov hair" is absolutely not a sign of wealth... It's interesting!

I live in East London and frequently see women in PJs on school runs. However, I don't know how women in suburban Paris or Florence dress for theirs.

I do see Italian and Spanish women every day in London though. I walk across the millennium bridge almost daily and most dress horribly, in unflattering outdoor coats and frizzy hair (welcome to Britain, tourists) and carry their backpacks on the front, as if they are expecting to get mugged at 11am in the Tate Modern queue.

I lived in Sweden and in Spain for a bit, and the only broad generalization I would make is that they generally spend more and buy less; they might have two immaculate winter coats, as opposed to 15 from Asos clearout. But they are also not as whimsical as Brits, which I love.

I only ever see British men wear football shirts as a standard night-out outfit (common in London). Continental men might wear them if they are going out to watch their team play, but not as a standard.

Very right @JackieDaws very much agree.

That is definitely not my experience 😂😂😂 Where are you ? Boxpark after a Crystal Palace game?

Gwenhwyfar · 29/01/2023 18:31

Welsh Tart - I've seen Welsh men wear football shirts to work in an office.
Unfortunate because that viscose material gets really smelly if they sweat.

Pigtailsandall · 29/01/2023 18:32

@TheWelshTart I think you misunderstand - I'm not saying all british men at all times wear only football shirts out but that only British men wear them as a standard get-up on regular basis. I used to live with one whose standard outfit for a night on the pull was his Arsenal shirt.

I see them everywhere in London, for years. Most recently at a pub in Holborn on Wednesday night. And more frequently abroad in holiday destinations.

Penguinsaregreat · 29/01/2023 18:39

Surely the plastic, Botox, lip filler look has come from the USA. Housewives of wherever for example. Are the British more influenced by American culture that other Europeans?
As for the slug eyebrows that has definitely died a death where I live.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone out and about in pjs. Plenty of tracksuits mainly on men. I also agree that men in general lack style. Very rare to find a truely stylish one anywhere.

RampantIvy · 29/01/2023 18:53

I haven't seen slug eyebrows for some time. Spider lashes and overdone lip fillers are another thing though.

I can only speak from personal observation to the remarks about the Housewives look, @Penguinsaregreat - but apart from the housewives themselves and their presumably limited social circles, it only appeals to the lowest/ least educated classes out in the wild in the US. People who identify otherwise would not be seen dead looking like that.

Autumnnewname · 29/01/2023 20:56

Lots of very stylish European women where I live and some not so much (including me who looks like a sack of tatties)

But I live in the UK.

LaLuz7 · 29/01/2023 20:59

Eastern Europeans definitely are. There's a lot of emphasis put on looks and attractiveness

ImAvingOops · 29/01/2023 21:15

I think rich women look good wherever they live - they can afford £800 coats! Poorer women may or may not look good depending on their innate sense of style. I'd argue that it's hard to look great if you are overweight and not wealthy - our high street clothes are really cheap and nasty right now. Slim women will generally look better in anything and there is an obesity problem in the UK!

I also believe that in some cultures it's considered more important to dress up and look smart in public - British culture is different. It may be important in young people to have the right brands but these brands are often still very casual, even if expensive.

RocketIceLollie · 29/01/2023 23:01

French women are the most stylish I think. They dress more reserved. Certainly less revealing and none of this too much make up as you often see here.

BrokenPencils · 29/01/2023 23:23

No idea! It depends on the area, absolutely.

I don't do 'groomed' myself, I'm not a show pony, although I like to look decent when out and about Grin

@Snoken i thought the same🤣

I think Eastern Europeans/Russians are generally a stylish lot (and Japanese too, but they are not European), with their preferable style being very feminine (dresses, heels and tight clothes as opposed to baggy jeans and trainers. You would never see them in pjs!). I live in Japan and I've heard foreign men praise the way women dress here countless times over the years (Japanese dress in less sexy and more 'innocent' way than Eastern Europeans, but they all have the same universal look of tight top and flowy flared skirt with flowery pattern on it, cold shoulder tops in neutral colors, nothing bold or whimsical, everything very safe and 'cute'. Even magazines for 40-somethings promote the 'cute' look).
German and Dutch - definitely not stylish. 😂 Can't say about others

toucaninjapan · 30/01/2023 04:24

Speaking of stereotypes, this is one of the examples of the way a 'typical British girl' looks like according to Japanese

DeFacto · 30/01/2023 04:53

Interesting @toucaninjapan, I live in a part of the UK where we have a lot of Japanese students and always get a lot of love from young Japanese women.

'I love your style'

'I love your hair'

'You're so beautiful'

Are things I often hear.

I am tall. Slender with wide shoulders. MAD silver hair. I wear quite structural but very British clothes, ie a Bella Freud cord suit or a a Jil Sanders flowing maxi-skirt with an oversized Man's pinstriped blazer with Aeyede white boots or Ginzas from The Row.

I don't wear recognisable labels, unless you know. Japanese women who travel to Europe 'know'.

'If you know, you know'.

"I've never seen anyone out in pjs except at 4am nipping to the local garage (with a coat over them)"

I used to live in a poor part of Cardiff and so women out in PJs and slippers every day. It really is a common ocurrance in some places. I don't think it's a real problem, but it's true that it's not very sophisticated.

I would see that as a sign of people being completely downtrodden and overwhelmed by life to the extent they’ve given up.

toucaninjapan · 30/01/2023 05:07

@DeFacto Japanese are generally fascinated by "foreign" features, the more unique, the better (however in most cases you would find people impressed with just how "different" and "unusual" you are to them and not necessarily fitting what they consider to be "attractive". I'm not saying it's 100% true in every case though). I bet you have also been told how small your face is and how "high" is your nose. 😊
Same goes for foreign fashion, they would find it very interesting (especially the whimsical bits!) and stylish in an unusual way ("Everyone has their own style! Wow!"), but won't necessarily want to copy it or feel it could be right (once again, attractive) for them.

DeFacto · 30/01/2023 05:28

Aha! @toucaninjapan, my nose is commented upon!

Small face isn't one I've ever had. I obviously have a large face!!

I am very porcelain skinned which, combined with my height, big nose, and mad hair always seemed very covetous.

Only Japanese women though.

Japanese men have never acknowledged my existence.

Interesting.

toucaninjapan · 30/01/2023 06:12

@DeFacto lol you might be too pretty (and too tall) for them! Many Japanese believe their men are not attractive to foreign (in most cases this means Caucasian) women. You won't see many foreign woman-Japanese man sort of couples here, a whopping majority of international couples would be made of Japanese woman-foreign man.
In addition, most of the Japanese men (at least according to the TV, magazines and occasional interviews of regular & famous men) are into the innocent look I've mentioned earlier. Everything cute, flowy, very very feminine, not too sexy or "intimidating". You would see most of the unmarried women in late 20s to late 30s embracing this look in order to be deemed attractive. Then once you're married/become a mother, you should immediately drop it and go for the more "dignified" look with hiding your body beneath wide dresses and trousers. God forbid you wear shorts, people will judge you! 😁

Very interesting to see this. Traditional British style brands (like Margaret Howell) seem to do very well in Japan.

missmoon · 30/01/2023 09:03

Also, to add to a few earlier posts on the Netherlands. I lived there for 10 years, and Dutch people (in my overwhelming experience) don’t care about clothes at all, they save all their money for beauty / tanning/ gym services and for travel. This was in Amsterdam, where most are quite well paid relative to the average. The quality / choice of clothes in shops was absolutely dire. Things may have improved in the years since I left, and I guess there is more internet shopping now (so stylish women can buy French clothes!).

toucaninjapan · 30/01/2023 10:15

@missmoon on the contrary, Boden with their fun prints has failed miserably in the past (no surprise here). They had retreated their women's selection on the Japanese version of the website for a while, but now are trying to come back, it seems. I doubt it will work out from the second try though, it couldn't be further from what most of the people wear here except for the some plainer bits maybe
