Are European women better groomed & better dressed than British women?

Following two interesting threads & posters are saying that the Dutch & German woman are impeccably groomed & dressed. The "scruffy toff with I untidy hair covered in dov hair" is absolutely not a sign of wealth... It's interesting!

European women and British women?

British women are also European women.

Anyway, in general other European women are better groomed and better dressed than British women but it depends on the countries you're referring to and the regions.

For one, our mainstream shopping websites leave a lot to be desired compared to those in some other European countries. Boxy clothes for everyone, no shape, form, beautiful prints or texture but I suppose it depends on personal taste too.

Mainstream online shopping? Zara? H&M? They aren't British

Oh God, some people are going to take your comments personally and the whole thread might end up being pulled.

Quite agree Gwen, it would be ridiculous to take such comments seriously. Someone might say 'ah, but this type of sweeping generalisation wouldn't stand if it was about some nationality other than Brits' - but such a sweeping generalisation simply wouldn't exist because it's just not reality (unless it was to say how elegant and stylish they were!) Obvious, really.

I agree with motherparent19 about the racial subtexts of this thread especially since someone posted that 'normal woman' meme.

Agree with jackiedaws too. Spot on.

I thought that “normal women” meme hilarious. It said it all!!!

Motherparent19 · 29/01/2023 16:15

It perfectly encapsulated my point.

Yes.

Whenever I visit the UK, I’m surprised at how many people present themselves.

Men on nights out in football shirts, or badly fitting jeans and shirts that are too short.

It’s rare to see a younger woman who is nicely and appropriately dressed. It seems to be either pyjamas in the daytime with greasy pulled back hair, or dressed to the nines with bad hair extensions, too much tan, ridiculous fake lashes, acrylic nails so long they can’t pick up coins, make-up with that contour look that often just looks dirty, ill-fitting short dresses, and shoes they struggle to walk in.
There seems to be so little in between.

Where on earth are you visiting?

I remember reading an article years ago that said Italian women only wear trainers for sport. I vowed to do the same. I do wear trainers for fashion reasons now, but only because there's such a wide choice and I don't wear them all the time. I wear boots, loafers, sandals. It's not a big deal but I think it summed up an Italian woman's approach to style and dressing.

I also once read an article that said that the only men who should wear short sleeved shirts (not t shirts/polo shirts) are the men who come to mend the photocopier! Showing my age here.....

Hubblebubble · 29/01/2023 16:19

I shouldve been clearer. It was an observation from when I was living in East Asia for two and half years. About fashion trends and a general culture of being well presented.

Single mums from Great Yarmouth or Blackpool?
What's single mum got to do with it? Snob

Yeah. Single parent families from deprived areas are likely going to make different style choices than wealthy parisiennes. Im not snobbish. I dont give a fuck. I was raised on a council estate by a single mother.
Im not the one saying that european women are all super stylish. I can assure you that most of the many european women in my family amd friends, are no more or less glamourous than the brits

There's nothing like a bit of British hate is there. British people bad, everyone else good.
.

Which seems to be acceptable.
I've noticed that the more virulent sentiments have been deleted.

I'm struggling to tell whether some of these posts are parody or not.

same 😁

I live on the continent and when I come back to UK I notice how orange everyone is and plastered in slap.

Goodness. Where is it that you're returning to? Nothing like that where I live.

Maireas · 29/01/2023 16:49

I think sometimes people look at certain young British women on tv and extrapolate that it represents the whole nation.
And that French women all dress like Marion Cotillard in a Chanel advert. 🙄

I'm starting to feel like the only British person in the NW who doesn't tan or go out in pjs reading this thread!
I've never seen anyone out in pjs except at 4am nipping to the local garage (with a coat over them)

Shame on you for letting the side down. Get out your fake tan, stick on your fake nails, find that Sharpie and sort out your eyebrows. Then put on your PJ's and get yourself to the tattoo parlor, preferably pushing a pram and accessorising with a random drunken tramp from the gutter along the journey in the role of "boyfriend". You too can be truly British! 🤣🤣🤣

almostpayday · 29/01/2023 17:03

I live in the North of England. The trend with a lot of young women seems to be bingo dabber eyebrows, long talon nails and long hair. I can't say I've seen any tango tanned women for a while.

Testino · 29/01/2023 17:15

CherryAndCreamCake · 29/01/2023 14:06

I have noticed a problem with the beauty, makeup and style trendy with all European women lately in general, huge filler lips, makeup that is veering on drag queen, fake tan, eyebrows that look extremely bushy "the natural look" or the sharpie look. It occurs everywhere in Europe. I have seen it first hand in Eastern Europe and Northern Europe. In England yes I think it is a bit worse, probably spurred on by image obsessed shows like TOWIE and Love Island. Many young people go to Turkey to have their perfectly fine teeth whittled down and replaced by ridiculous ice white teeth. Fake tan does seem to be more ubiquitous with the English. The caked on drag makeup is a tad more prevalent here as well. The beauty of the European woman used to be softer, more elegant and has been replaced in modern times by something gaudy. I really hope its just a passing trend! The amount of lip filler I see on young women and the "fox eye" surgery is alarming. It looks awful and obvious. Add to that the caterpillar lashes and orange skin l really can't wait for it to all die down. I saw this meme online, sums it up.

The meme is missing some things.

"Normal" white and blonde women and British white and blonde women.

Since it's obviously about blonde White women.

Not that there's anything "abnormal" about those who aren't snow white-skinned and darker haired White women.

Also, I agree that posting the meme has made a point for the pp who's talking about other races. "Normal women" vs others. Ewww.

"I've never seen anyone out in pjs except at 4am nipping to the local garage (with a coat over them)"

I used to live in a poor part of Cardiff and so women out in PJs and slippers every day. It really is a common ocurrance in some places. I don't think it's a real problem, but it's true that it's not very sophisticated.

EllaPaella · 29/01/2023 17:45

The only people I have ever seen out in pyjamas in daylight are students in the local Waitrose.

If you're in a Waitrose you're not in a deprived area though.

Pigtailsandall · 29/01/2023 17:51

I live in East London and frequently see women in PJs on school runs. However, I don't know how women in suburban Paris or Florence dress for theirs.

I do see Italian and Spanish women every day in London though. I walk across the millennium bridge almost daily and most dress horribly, in unflattering outdoor coats and frizzy hair (welcome to Britain, tourists) and carry their backpacks on the front, as if they are expecting to get mugged at 11am in the Tate Modern queue.

I lived in Sweden and in Spain for a bit, and the only broad generalization I would make is that they generally spend more and buy less; they might have two immaculate winter coats, as opposed to 15 from Asos clearout. But they are also not as whimsical as Brits, which I love.

I only ever see British men wear football shirts as a standard night-out outfit (common in London). Continental men might wear them if they are going out to watch their team play, but not as a standard.

Very right @JackieDaws very much agree.

Huh? We left the EU trading bloc, not the continent of Europe!

Nah, we got pushed well out into the Atlantic. Didn't you know?

TheWelshTart · 29/01/2023 18:13

I was in Vienna recently and most women had the standard Winter uniform on of some kind of puffer coat, a bobble hat and trainers or chunky boots. There was a noticeable lack though of the dark eyebrows and the Russian lashes popular in the UK.

How can you say "European" though and mean everyone ? That is just silly.

I live in one of the most deprived areas of England apparently! Read a newspaper article the other day about it, 65% of the pupils locally are pupil premium and the school does free breakfast, washed and mends uniform and even cooked Christmas dinner. They're amazing

Hopealong · 29/01/2023 18:20

I live in Portugal in an area that a lot of Europeans visit for holidays. My observations are that German/Dutch/ Danish/ Swedish ladies and men for that matter, tend to be taller and longer limbed than us Brits. Think this really helps in pulling off an elegant, more catwalk look.
I'm 5 ft 5, small framed and not over weight but really struggle to pull off an elegant look in my opinion.
