Are European women better groomed & better dressed than British women?

Following two interesting threads & posters are saying that the Dutch & German woman are impeccably groomed & dressed. The "scruffy toff with I untidy hair covered in dov hair" is absolutely not a sign of wealth... It's interesting!

Are women of other races not women too? Or they just don’t count? Just curious.

Not in this context - because the perception is that they are generally immaculately groomed and elegant wherever you go, whether here or on the continental mainland.

"I've never seen anyone out in pjs except at 4am nipping to the local garage (with a coat over them)"

I used to live in a poor part of Cardiff and so women out in PJs and slippers every day. It really is a common ocurrance in some places. I don't think it's a real problem, but it's true that it's not very sophisticated.

Did you not see the pic of Nadhim Zahawi with his wife yesterday? They were coming out of somewhere glam and she was wearing the most HIDEOUS outfit that resembled sparkly pjs. Money cannot buy you style.

Explodingatomickittens · 31/01/2023 07:57

@Shitfather not style but Nadhim Zahawi's wife has gorgeous hair, skin & teeth on top of a very good figure. This over compansates for her sometimes dodgy outfits

I think the uk fashion, make up, unnatural lips, fillers, boobs etc is what it is, is because we copy American ideas of beauty and fashion. Not the European idea

Not American per se but the Kardashian trash.

European women is quite a broad group! You can't lump everyone in together there are a lot of different countries cultures in Europe and it's competitive subjective anyway. In my opinion it's far more to do with class and money than it is with country. Go to a poor provincial town in France, Germany or Spain and the people will look and dress very differently from those in the places like Paris , Berlin, Madrid, Munich, Hamburg or Nice. You'll notice the same in the U.K. where London is a fashion capital of the world. There will be cultural nuances to the way we dress I know what you mean about Brits being a little more shabby chic.

Buttalapasta · 31/01/2023 18:34

I'm in Italy and one thing I've noticed is (apart from kids and teenagers) people don't really wear t-shirts in the summer unless they are at the gym or beach. Actually I don't think my dh even owns just a plain t-shirt. 😅

Buttalapasta · 31/01/2023 18:35

Also I agree that there is a lot more fake tan in the UK and leggings - which only look good on about 1% of the population.

Buttalapasta · 31/01/2023 18:38

DesertRose64 · 29/01/2023 15:16

I’d be able to tell also.

To be fair, the light is really bright in Italy. I wish I'd started wearing sunglasses all the time 20 years ago, maybe I wouldn't have such awful crow's feet now!

Ha, I've seen Italians wearing them at night as a hairband.

No, I didn't. Can you share?
I googled and there is a photo of her in a strapless top and colourful leggings. The leggings are not to my taste, but they don't look like PJs either.

LolaMoon · 31/01/2023 19:53

Interesting observation. I've spent time in 6 European countries and I would agree that women in UK definitely wear more fake tan and makeup. BUT, what I noticed in very hot countries like Portugal for example (where during summer you get very strong sun from 7am- 10pm) is that both men and women had very, very leathery skin from late 30s which is hardly surprising and very ageing. So, they would look quite stunning when young but once they hit late 30s/early 40s they looked waaay older than their chronological age. It was very noticeable compared to the english who get much less sun, comparably and just shows how aging the sun is.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/01/2023 19:54

It doesn’t detract from her dodgy husband though!

Gwenhwyfar · 31/01/2023 21:18

Spain is also sunny and you don't see this.

I wear sunglasses all the year round due to where I live. But, I also wear them wherever I am in the world in winter even for a few hours a day due to having very sensitive eyes after more than 4 decades in the Middle East.

The school my grandchildren go to is made up of children from 97 countries. It can become very easy to correctly identify a new mums nationality due to how they are dressed.

Explodingatomickittens · 31/01/2023 22:27

@DesertRose64 you must give more info than that! Which nationalities are best & worst dressed? And which are best & worst groomed?!

Seems like just another thread to make out British women are all unstylish and frumpy.

I'm sure the same people that insist that simply everyone else dresses better than Brits also insist that healthcare everywhere else is better, schools everywhere else are better, food everywhere else is better, etc etc

And yet....they still live in the UK!

Triggered much? No one has said all British women are frumpy. We were talking about what it looks like on average, in general. That's a completely different thing.

It’s pretty sneery for S&B

Usually people realise not everyone is into style but still threads are about good things

Is everyone lamenting U.K. tip top wrt style? If so I reckon they wouldn’t be so keen to talk about others negatively

Wiennetta · 01/02/2023 08:32

I really don’t recognise the UK that some people are describing on this thread.

I haven’t seen lots of fake tan for years - maybe the odd person but it doesn’t really seem mainstream now. Same as the very heavy/contoured make up, thick eyebrows, big lip fillers etc - it’s not really something I see around at all.

It does vary from one area to another though - I’m in Edinburgh, which I feel is generally quite a dressed down city, with a lot of students. The students generally are fresh faced/natural looking.

It’d be the same in any country I imagine, there’d be a variety of styles and differences between cities/regions.

One thing I do think is the UK is pretty creative in terms of style, you see more variety perhaps in London compared to Paris say. It’s maybe not as conformist as some other countries.

I think the UK clothes are a bit crap, it feels to me like we’ve fallen in love with fast fashion more than some of our neighbours.

@MrsGhandi if you do live in Oman, I’m very envious!! I’d absolutely love to have a stint there after visiting it 3 times.

Honestly, It’s not about that for me. It’s a just a little thing I like doing. Just as I can generally tell which part of the country men here come from just by looking at their national dress and head ware. It’s actually a national uniform but there are just little things that for an observant person make their village/region identifiable. It’s the same with people watching wherever I go. Guessing a persons nationality is something I like doing.

Not currently I'm afraid.

I only ever see British men wear football shirts as a standard night-out outfit (common in London)

No it isn't.
