Are European women better groomed & better dressed than British women?

Following two interesting threads & posters are saying that the Dutch & German woman are impeccably groomed & dressed. The "scruffy toff with I untidy hair covered in dov hair" is absolutely not a sign of wealth... It's interesting!

I too admire the flat sandal and cute dress Italian look. Are there Italian brands who sell this kind of thing online?

DesertRose64 · 29/01/2023 12:00

I love to sit a people watch in Germany and Italy. The older couple/those out on their own are so fit and very much take pride in their appearance. There are so many independent boutiques to buy clothes from. I now try and model myself on what I’ve seen there, I’m much fitter and healthier, and I’m far better turned out now that I try to only shop in individual boutiques.

@Snoken give us examples of how the Stockholm women are styled please! Both clothes & grooming!

They all dress like this with natural makeup, natural hair, just very natural and fresh looking.

Speaking of French reddish home dye jobs, there are an awful, and I mean genuinely awful, purple/rainbow home dye jobs in the UK. It looks terrible.

I'm in Spain at the moment and have been for a couple of months, (smallish MC town, quite a bit of wealth to be seen) and yesterday I saw a woman in her 40s or 50s with electric ultramarine blue hair but otherwise dressed quite normally for here. Unfortunately the dye job was not done well and really stood out. (The sort of colour that if you saw it in the UK you'd think the woman had lost a bet.)
It's quite a conservative area and middle aged people tend to dress similarly but fairly well. The men tend to look better than middle aged Brits in terms of clothes and shoes (no footie gear or baseball caps) but are similarly shaped!
Women tend to be more within a 'normal' size range but larger ones are not unusual. Thank god, or I'd stand out even more. Scarves (not head scarves) are everywhere and definitely seem to smarten up an outfit, I'd say. Nails are done but makeup is light.
Youngsters -- well, the same as everywhere else, really. Jeans, trainers, puffa jackets. Not much makeup though.

but this is just another capital city/major city thing

yes in Stockholm and Gothenburg you will see scandi cool, normcore, neutral colours in big voluminous shapes, minimalist jewellery, ‘no make up’ make up, etc. but at the same time it’s uniform and no one wants to stand out, so you won’t see people chucking on a paint splattered tracksuit to run and get some more milk

leave Stockholm head to the rural towns and you’ll have women dressed in velour tracksuits, loud jazzy prints, eighties make up and highlights, knitwear, clompy shoes. Whatever really. Anything they want to wear

Exactly the same as the uk

DesertRose64 · 29/01/2023 12:08

Im currently watching a series on Netflix called Fauda and one of the female leads this time round is dressed identically to the woman in that
picture except she also wears a headscarf. The series is set in Tel Aviv.

All of european women vs British women?
I think this sort of thing varies massively according to things like city people or rural. Age groups, professional jobs etc.

If youre contrasting young parisians and Berliners etc with single mums from great yarmouth or blackpool, then you might notice a big difference, but if i go see my mum in rural france, most of the women are in jeans, short hair, no makeup and variety of shapes and sizes.
My southern mediteranean family members are often quite overweight as they get older.
I am not sure why people seem to think european women are this superstylish bunch, when theyre just people, and it really varies

Single mums from Great Yarmouth or Blackpool?
What's single mum got to do with it? Snob

I don't think so. And when did we stop being European?“

2016 ☹️🤬

GPTec1 · 29/01/2023 12:47

We are quite a poor country & getting poorer as GDP per capita and looking good can cost.

Maybe this is the reason?

puttingontheritz · 29/01/2023 12:49

Nameneeded · 29/01/2023 11:50

I think it's because we just don't care as much. We could also look stylish and well turned out if we gave a shit. I think a lot of us British women have different priorities and I'm proud that we don't feel the pressure that French/German women do. It takes time, money and motivation to look good and perhaps we just don't see the point of making so much effort ?

You are totally wrong about this with regard to France at any rate. It's a different approach, less fast fashion, and it doesn't take effort, it takes buying items carefully, but not necessarily often. When you get to really know French women, you notice that they wear the same clothes again and again.

I hear this quite a lot then from the same group we are 5th 6th richest country and we have x or y it’s outrageous

Seems to change based on whether we are to be seen as poor or rich.

Blip · 29/01/2023 12:55

I think things vary wildly even just within the UK according to what region you are in and whether city or rural, rich or poor, old or young.

am genuinely puzzled as to where you are to see the streets thronging with orange people

Of course not, if you read the thread it's about European women, which obviously covers all races & women who live on the continent of Europe. Don't try to twist this into a race debate. Michelle Obama was already mentioned upthread as the epitome of U.S East Coast understated glamour.

Race debate, race baiting, chip on shoulder, why does everything have to be about race, etc. Then the word narcissist will be thrown in.

I have no idea where Michelle Obama, an American comes into this or why she is relevant.

The discussion is about British women and European women. The tenor of this thread has made it abundantly clear that the image of the women from both these categories are white women.

You might want to label it race debate, race hating, or a number of terms to distract from that clear point. It is simply an observation and goes to why this idea of a fundamental difference between British and “European “ women is nonsensical and insulting to British and “European “ women - all of them, no matter their race, class or sense of style.

Hubblebubble · 29/01/2023 13:09

Slightly different, but I noticed that East Asians are much better groomed and chic than British women. The reverse culture shock returning to the UK was dramatic. Never mind fashion, everyone looked like they needed a good wash.

I am British but whenever I go abroad am always mistaken for being mainland European. Not sure why - could be my perfectly groomed hair, the fact that I dress solely in muted camel and navy tones, or my flawless pronunciation of the word 'saucisson'. When I tell them I'm actually (whisper) British, all the locals in the taverna squeal in astonishment and reassure me that they'd never have guessed, and now they know, they just know I would never have voted leave.

Grin

On a serious note, this really is the internal monologue of certain sections of London remain voters.

The stats are quite clear, GDP as a total is 5th/6th but as per capita, we are way down the list.

Per capita is where it matters in regard to how we all feel & on how much the country can spend per person on public services or on fashion etc this is all that counts.

GDP per capita is what's important. We are a rich country but have high inequality.

Compared to where? We’re about the same re inequality with Aus and NZ, lower than US but higher than Nordic countries

It hasn’t increased in last decade or so although you see a fair few posts re increasing inequality

Re we are a rich country or poor I don’t mind but people seem to switch when making a point. Either one or the other
