Hair regret post impromptu restyle

I had my hair chopped today and went from just below shoulders to chin length Bob. I adored it when it was done but was hungover, now worrying that I had just felt a bit impulsive. I hadn't really thought much about it before today them before I knew it I was blurting out "I need a change".
Eek! What can I do while I wait for it to grow? It does grow very quickly and I'm sure I can cope,, as it is hardly a terrible thing - shallow of me to even complain, but my hair! 😩😩 - it's been complimented recently for having got longer. Why did I do it?! Will I look older with a chin length Bob than my longer hair? Gah....

Well what do you feel about it now? You sound like you're too scared to look in the mirror since getting home!

I'm sure you'll get used to it soon! For what it's worth people are always telling me my hair looks nice just before my hair appointment!! Bit like I always think my make up looks best just before i remove it before falling into bed. 😧

MarshaMelrose · 28/01/2023 01:21

Give it a week or two. Initially it looks so different to what you're used to that it feels strange and uncomfortable.
Let others see it and get their feedback. Enjoying dangerously!

NightOwlNotEarlyBird · 28/01/2023 02:12

Honestly you'll get used to it! I cut mine about once a year, it grows fast so I go from long to short, always want one when I have the other 😅 I think short hair looks good when it's a bit wavy so try styling it (or spritz some salt spray and scrunch).

Hollyhocksandtulips · 28/01/2023 09:09

T hank you thank you 🙏. I needed this. I think it will need to be waved to look its best. It's the shock I guess ! @tobee yes! Loads of people had said this week how they liked my hair long - why does that always happen?! 🤣. Hoping to leave it today then wash it tomorrow and have a play with the straightener and salt spray to see what I can do with it to make it look ok again. I loved it when the hairdresser did it as she is fabulous. Just the unusual I guess making me doubt myself !

I always feel great about my hair the day I have a hairdresser appointment 😂

I think you instinctively did want a change and it’s good to mix things up a bit, otherwise things get boring. I’ve not had the same haircut for three years, couldn’t even say ‘the usual please’.

I had a bit of an incident in November where it was all hacked off, much shorter than yours and I didn’t like it so much but it’s growing back and with a good hairdresser even if you don’t love it, it probably still suits you well.

rollonpaydaymonday · 28/01/2023 12:59

I had a similar cut years ago. It went from shoulder length to a short bob. I didn't like it but it soon grew out and I liked it a bit longer. I used to straighten my short bob as it looked better straight. You will soon get used to it.

Hollyhocksandtulips · 28/01/2023 13:55

I'm going swimming shortly so it'll need a wash and then I'll be able to see the true extent of how much work it'll be to blow dry. I was frivolous having it cut into a style that needs drying properly !
Hairdresser said she cut cut a layer into it if it's too blunt so will see - the hairdryers are great at the gym so I've a fighting chance of drying it ok.

Have a play around with clips and things, for a bit of variety. I did the same once but found I could do quite a bit with it - GHD curls, clip back fringe, little French plait behind one ear etc

Hollyhocksandtulips · 28/01/2023 20:37

I've had a crack at waving it and thought I'd done ok but DS laughed and said "it's just TOO short"

Findyourneutralspace · 28/01/2023 20:38

Well what on earth does DS know? 🤣

Hollyhocksandtulips · 28/01/2023 20:42

He's helpfully added that I look like his (16 year old male) friend

Who to be fair has got great hair in terms of colour and thickness. But he meant it as an insult. No matter. Have opened wine and will go to bed soon, cushioned by my salt sprayed, springy GHD curled locks

You probably need to add volume and some of those beach waves to survive the change over. Something messy and modern.

OP - can you post a picture?

Hollyhocksandtulips · 29/01/2023 10:27

Pic. Slept on but you get the idea of the length

OP - Your hair is a lovely colour and I think the cut looks nice. Mine was a similar length and I used to straighten it. It will take some time to get used to.

Hollyhocksandtulips · 29/01/2023 12:43

@rollonpaydaymonday 😊 thanks. Faded red head here 🙋‍♀️. Miss my auburn firey locks.
It's a good cut. Just a shock to me. I'll get over it !

catandcoffee · 29/01/2023 13:42

That's a nice length OP.

TheWelshTart · 29/01/2023 17:42

It definitely needs some oomph @Hollyhocksandtulips !

Heathcote294 · 29/01/2023 19:03

I think you just need a deeper part and a bit of volume on the flipped over side. I've got a similar bob and I blow dry the parting on the opposite side to the way it should lie then flip it over, it gives it instant volume. Rough it up with some dry shampoo and you're golden.

Hollyhocksandtulips · 29/01/2023 19:34

@Heathcote294 Top tip. Thanks. I'm washing it again tomorrow so will try that

@Heathcote294 Top tip. Thanks. I'm washing it again tomorrow so will try that

Also, tuck one side behind your ear-the side with less hair.

Heathcote294 · 29/01/2023 20:02

This is mine

Ooh yes @Heathcote294 I see what you mean about volume. Lovely

I did exactly the same as you last year! I actually really liked my long hair and I had recently got lots of compliments but I just chopped it off for some bizarre reason. Currently growing it back. I'm about half way there and I'll starting to like it more. Why do we do it to ourselves??
