Tuesdays 4160 - perfume

LavenderLewis · 27/01/2023 15:37

Following a recommendation on MN I ordered a sample box of seven Tuesdays 4160 perfumes. To be honest I have never before really disliked a perfume to the extent of wanting to wash away the smell but I felt like this with all seven samples. Really hoped to find a nice fresh new scent. Am I alone in not liking them? - Guess I must be because they seem popular.

@Chevyimpala67 I'm with you on Chanel, with the exception of No. 19 which I love.

I tend to like Guerlain though, with a few exceptions.

ChocChipOwl · 29/01/2023 20:59

I don't like them. Overpowering and all the same. Exception is Mrs Gloss which is unusual and grabs your attention for the right reasons

What we did on our holidays nearly knocked me sick

Coniferhedge · 29/01/2023 21:46

I bought some samples and quite liked What We Did On Our Holidays so wore it for a few days on the trot. Eventually DH asked me if I minded not wearing it as often as he really didn’t like it!

LavenderLewis · 29/01/2023 22:50

Interesting that Tuesdays 4160 gets such strong reactions. I like Chanel and Guerlian -
Mitsouko and No 5 but was looking for something a bit different.

I have had a few of these. They all smell the same to me- the signature house scent overwhelms everything. Sarah seems fab but the perfumes are odd.

Have you tried the Chanel Exclusifs?
Some stunning perfumes in there.
I like the old Guerlains, Shalimar, Samsara, Vol de Nuit and L'Heure Bleue (full bottles of all 4 in my winter scent wardrobe) and most of the Aqua Allegoricas for summer, but Mon Guerlain gets the side eye 😂

CointreauVersial · 30/01/2023 13:25

I don't hate them, but never got past a "meh" with any of them, sadly.

Worse, they have something in the formula that I'm allergic to, so they bring me out in a rash.

CoachBeard · 30/01/2023 13:32

I don’t like them either. I was given a January Joy box and there was literally only one that I liked but that one I absolutely adored. It was Standing Stones, which I think was a partial prototype for something else and wasn’t ever properly released. It didn’t smell like any of her other scents and I ended up getting a big bottle of it.

Ravageur · 30/01/2023 13:35

I'm never listening to another recommendation on here. I hated them I didn't even pop them in the loo/my bag/the car for emergency air freshening purposes. There are definitely reps of these companies stalking here and I FELL FOR IT. Baaa 🐑

ChocChipOwl · 30/01/2023 14:42

@Ravageur I don't know if they have reps but they certainly have die hard fans!

4160 could release a fart in a jar and some people would rave over it.

They're a strange company

MissBattleaxe · 30/01/2023 19:42

They don't have reps. They're not Avon! But they do have loyal fans and a tight knit Facebook group and I'm one of them. There is no such thing as bad perfume. There's always someone somewhere who will like it.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 31/01/2023 05:54

Shazam! sotd. Love ❤️ it.

TattiePants · 31/01/2023 08:37

It’s probably a couple of years since I bought a sample pack so I’m tempted to dig them out and give them another try.

Starof1972 · 31/01/2023 08:48

Morning everyone, need a speedy response if possible please! I'm off to a retail park with a Penhaligons outlet and I'm thinking of buying my aunt one of their discovery sets. She's only in her 60s and I've never sampled any of their scents so I'm wondering if it's a good idea? She normally wears Pleasures (E. Lauder) or DKNY women so loves floral and citrus notes and particularly violet or rose. Hope someone has one of these sets and can offer an opinion. Thank you!

Starof1972 · 31/01/2023 08:50

I'm SO sorry, I meant to start a new thread! I'll get it moved asap😊

ferretface · 31/01/2023 20:56

I got a sample pack of Tuesdays a while back - I was a bit sceptical as I've had bad experiences with indie perfume houses in the past. (I will respectfully disagree with MissBattleaxe on no such thing as bad perfume!)

I tend to gravitate towards powder/amber/musk/vanilla/gourmand and heavier orientals although I do enjoy some fresher scents from time to time (e.g. basilico and fellini). I got a selection based on this and did like most of them - I have to say two that I thought I'd like based on the notes (dancing with strangers and another kiss by the fireside) didn't appeal to me, and another kiss by the fireside was a scrubber rather than "meh". I should try it again to see if it gives me the same reaction as this is pretty rare for me with perfume, normally I can appreciate a scent even if I don't find it particularly exciting or "me".

I did however like Shazam, Sexiest Scent and was also surprised by how much I liked What I Did On my Holidays which just gave me boozy pineapple kind of vibes (not what the description suggests!). I do think they share a DNA and I'd find it hard to imagine something super fresh and clear coming from this house although to be fair, I didn't try and order anything in that vein. I found them interesting enough that I'd order more samples and might be tempted by a bottle of one of the scents I've liked, after trying them a few more times.

Rebel2023 · 31/01/2023 21:19

The laundry perfume they did was very much not their style I thought. The one for Samsung (I got a massive bottle and adore it!)
It makes me think more of the clean range

Definitely think you generally like a perfume house or not
I can buy anything from Kyse, Clean or MMM replica and know I will love it

SwedishEdith · 31/01/2023 22:02

I've never smelt any of them but I really dislike the names. I know that's probably unreasonable.

locketsposy · 31/01/2023 23:38

I like lots from MMM, too, @Rebel2023 Laundry wasn't their (4160's) usual style, I agree.

I've always wanted to try Centrepiece but usually get tempted by something new, or an old favourite, first. Though I need to check the notes again, as I can't remember.

I got a full bottle (original Samsung bottle too) which is 100ml. For £8
I spotted it, blinked, and clicked buy frantically

GrimDamnFanjo · 01/02/2023 00:50

I have lots of them!
I agree the dna is strong.
My faves are centrepiece, Shazam - which I got custom blended - evil Max, raw silk and red roses, killer rose.
There are a couple. Really didn't get on with. What I did on my holidays and lion cupboard.
Sarah is great. I actually went to her open studio about 5 yrs ago. I admire her for offering something different.

TheClitterati · 01/02/2023 01:09

I have about 25 bottles of 4160 so I'm absolutely a big fan.

But I don't like any of her scents with the peach vibe.

My favs are:
Maxed out
Lightning ridge
Sleep knot
Rhubarb & custard
Up the apple & pears.

Waft from the loft
Lion cupboard

They are all quite different & unique.

InsomniacVampire · 01/02/2023 07:49

They do have die-hard fans and the FB group is a bit of a personality cult. There are some things that the owner has said that I really disagree with (and she and many members can get very touchy if you say anything that is not uber positive).

My main gripe is thatmany of them are not really finished, they do a gazillion things, modifications and release them because they are already made I presume ("we did it byaccident but we liked it and so we are selling it), lots of things are very limited and it's hard to keep track of all of the releases.

That being said, they are a fun house that kept the prices as low as they can, and I lvoe the idea of customisations too they do twice a year.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 01/02/2023 08:58

I bought a load of testers before Christmas and I'm struggling to find a standout among them. Agree a lot seem - not exactly samey, but have the same almost 'dirty' dry down on me. That could be my skin, however - I cant get on with Chanel for the same reason ; they all go sour on me.

I wanted to love Court of Ravens and it is very similar to Portrait of a Lady - which I have and really like. But there's a screechy note in there which I don't like at all. Is it the peppermint? I don't know, but that won't be a purchase for me.

Ealing Green on me smells like the body wash you get stapled to the wall in Premier Inns. Or a cheap citronella candle. That's a hard no.

Meet me on the Corner disappears after ten seconds on my skin, can't smell that at all.

Amberama dries down to a plain Amber that I can smell in a hundred other perfumes - the raspberry top note for me doesn't work with the Amber and smells very synthetic

White Queen ends up just smelling like coconut sun cream on me, not a note I'm keen on.

However, in Maxed Out, I get no coconut at all but a lot of cannabis.

A walk in the forest is pleasantly green and mossy, with a cedar note that I like a lot, but it just doesn't have the oomph to make me want to buy a whole bottle

The dark heart of Old Havana - I don't generally like rum as a note and this is far too sweet on me. This one is a migraine inducer for me.

I'm quite enjoying Shazam, although the patchouli is a touch too overbearing for my taste, and also The Sexiest scent... but not enough to invest in a whole bottle.

The only one I may repurchase is Eau my Soul which is an excellent, seamless warm blend of sandalwood, amber, honey and a myrrh note which makes me repeatedly sniff myself

I'll go back and try more in the future, as I do love the uniqueness of the brand and maybe the sort of perfumes I thought I liked are not the ones I've tried yet from them.

ferretface · 01/02/2023 11:41

I tried Another Kiss by the Fireside again last night and yep, I still find it awful 😅 it's funny as it shares some of the same soul as Floral Street's Chypre Sublime (a strong rose and geranium) which I love, but I just can't stand it in this fragrance. It smells like a Turkish delight had a war with a Christmas candle and then someone came in and dumped a stinky old leather saddle in the middle of it all. (I do like leather fragrances too!)

The endless scent releases, personality cult stuff and deliberate limited editions is the same marketing strategy as another indie house I've tried where everything is just bad and the success of the brand is entirely marketing and nothing to do with good fragrance, which is why I started from a position of scepticism. But to be fair to Tuesdays I think the scents are overall decent and some are good. Of my 7 samples I liked 3, found 2 ok, found 1 meh and actively hated 1. So not a bad hit rate overall. I'll probably try some of the scents people have mentioned in this thread.
