Perfume vs Fabric Softener

Hi,

I have recently started trying some perfume samples but am aware my fabric softener smells quite strong too. What fabric softener do you use that doesn't overpower the perfume? Is there unscented fabric softener?

Surcare and Ecover do unscented softener. I go to Waitrose to buy them, as I can never find Surcare, and only sometimes find the unscented Ecover, in other supermarkets.

inappropriateraspberry · 19/01/2023 07:25

Just use less softener, it's only really natural fibres that need it, so unless all your clothes are cotton a little bit will do the job.

dudsville · 19/01/2023 07:30

I can't remember why but we stopped using softener and it's been fine. All my clothes are cotton. My laundry detergent is mildly scented and doesn't interfere with my perfume.

Slimjimtobe · 19/01/2023 07:32

I would just stop using softener too

Justellingthetruth · 19/01/2023 07:32

@inappropriateraspberry

that's not accurate

thedevilinablackdress · 19/01/2023 07:35

None, never used it. Overpowering smells that I don't like and don't like the way it makes clothes feel.

EspeciallyDetermined · 19/01/2023 07:36

We don't use fabric conditioner at all, haven't for years and don't miss it.

MudLady · 19/01/2023 07:42

We’ve not used softener in several years. It’s a waste of money IMO - it costs extra money, not really necessary, most of them smell really strong, & it can makes the washing machine need service washes more often. IDK why people buy expensive perfume etc if they are just going to smell of softener chemicals. Once I stopped using it, it became obvious how much it smells, honestly the odour on some people is as strong as cigarette smoke (although usually less unpleasant). IDK how much they’re using that I can smell them from a couple of metres away in the street!

The supposedly unscented softener usually still has a smell, it’s just far milder because there isn’t loads of perfume added. Unscented isn’t the same as odourless.

yousmellnice · 19/01/2023 07:44

Yes I realise my softener smells too strongly.

Thanks for the unscented recommendations.

I dry inside at the moment so things go a bit too crunchy without anything but I'll try adding less.

Never ever used fabric softener

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 19/01/2023 07:51

Or use one of the laundry products which is an all in one. I really dislike the smell of fasbric softener and don't want to walk around smelling of it!!

LovelyDaaling · 19/01/2023 07:55

We haven't used fabric softener for years. So glad we stopped. We didn't need it but advertising convinced us we did. Our washing machine is healthier without it, as is my purse.

vjg13 · 19/01/2023 13:08

Like PP I have stopped it and don't notice the difference with clothing. The washing machine drawer looks a lot better though and rarely needs a clean.

yousmellnice · 19/01/2023 13:11

I know I could not use it but I tried that and it didn't go down well. I will try unscented.

OP posts:
mewkins · 19/01/2023 13:14

I don't use it any more. I prefer crunchy towels!

Haffiana · 19/01/2023 13:15

I found most things are actually softer without it! Particularly cotton. They also dry MUCH faster without fabric conditioner.

I now only use it on some fleece items.

EspeciallyDetermined · 19/01/2023 13:48

You soon adjust to the crunchiness, we stopped using it when the DCs were babies as I didn't want the fragrance on their skin and have never gone back, if for any reason someone washes our clothes with it now (eg staying at someone's house) it feels really weird, all floppy and and a bit slimy.

DoYou · 19/01/2023 13:55

@yousmellnice which fabric softener do you use?

Emmamoo89 · 19/01/2023 13:58

I use comfort fabric softener. Use the honeysuckle one. Love it.

Emmamoo89 · 19/01/2023 13:59

I also use it on my babies clothes too.

yousmellnice · 19/01/2023 16:26

DoYou · 19/01/2023 13:55

@yousmellnice which fabric softener do you use?

I use comfort blue skies in an attempt to mask the fact its dried inside. It's too strong though. I only use quarter of cap.

OP posts:
yousmellnice · 19/01/2023 16:27

Basically I need it to counteract the smell of inside drying but not be so strong that it overpowers my perfume 😂

OP posts:
yousmellnice · 19/01/2023 16:28

I might dry doing my washing without it and everyone else's with it.

PixiePirate · 19/01/2023 16:31

I use a scoop of soda crystals instead of fabric conditioner. It helps soften our very hard water and keeps the machine drawer squeaky clean. I sometimes add a capful of Zoflora for things like bedding and towels.

sensechec · 19/01/2023 16:35

Use white vinegar instead
