Checking in. Very interesting thread.

mathanxiety · 17/01/2023 20:30

My thought on Charles or the PoW attending is that Constantine wasn't head of state, just a deposed relative on the 'blow in' side. Therefore attendance of the head of state or next in line wouldn't have been appropriate, but attendance of a relative was.

LadyEloise1 · 17/01/2023 20:32

Thank you for the new thread @Maireas

I think Gabriella Windsor will bring more style to our threads as she increases her appearances on behalf of the RF.
She is elegant. Her mother too was stylish.

Maireas · 17/01/2023 20:32

@LadyEloise1 😂😂 I'm a bold girl!
(the last time I was told I was a bold girl was by Sr Mary Frances, when in the Fifth Form! )

I think Sofia's suit would look great on Kate, and on Meghan.

TangledWebOfDeception · 17/01/2023 20:34

@mathanxiety That does make a lot of sense.

Maireas · 17/01/2023 20:34

So true about those women in the Kent family. Princess Alexandra is still so elegant and stylish, and of course Lady Gabriella too, as well as Marie-Christine (sans controversial brooches..🙄)

Sofia looks amazing in the black trouser suit. Her hair and makeup are gorgeous.

mathanxiety · 18/01/2023 01:01

Yes indeed - she always looks elegant and up to date imo, and delighted to be wherever she is, meeting whoever shes meeting.

Serenster · 18/01/2023 09:18

I too sided eyed the non-attendance of William. If the Queen was still alive, I am pretty sure Charles would have gone as POW, as he used to attend a lot of funerals on behalf of the Queen. As the King now maybe he is following the pattern his mother adopted? I think it’s was perfectly acceptable that Anne went - she obviously knows the too, and was a bridesmaid at their wedding.

(I do grudgingly accept that perhaps William wants to lay low and just do small engagements until the furore over Spare blows over. And the number of press photographers and camera crews in Athens would doubtless be considerably increased if he had attended, too).

As for people being invited to take thrones, I am always bemused by the Swedish King adopting one of Napoleon’s French Marshals (and a distant in-law to be his heir), just to keep Napoleon sweet. And sticking to deal even once Napoleon was defeated. The Bernadotte family history is wild!

paradyning · 18/01/2023 11:10

She heard us! Boots! It is cold today for stilettos.
Dodgy red and camel colour combo

KillingMeDeftly · 18/01/2023 11:11

Yes, the history of the European monarchies is very interesting! There's a film about Bernadotte, or rather his wife Desiree. Marlon Brando plays Napoleon, who was apparently in love with her at one point.

I also find it interesting that the monarchs rarely married consorts from the countries they reigned over, even in the last 100 years or so. I think Daniel will be the first Swedish-born consort for centuries!

paradyning · 18/01/2023 11:44

Other pictures it looks like an orange dress. Which is better with camel. But then a black belt?

ChicoryDip · 18/01/2023 11:45

I don't like camel coats much anyway but I'll forgive the colour combination based on the boots and the red jumper/skirt which I really do like.

I like Kate's look today. The belt breaks it up a bit.

Is it the same orange dress she wore in Boston with a chocolate brown coat? I liked that colour combination more, but an also a fan of the camel coat.

TangledWebOfDeception · 18/01/2023 12:02

I have no problem with black belt/camel coat. We often judge her outfits as a whole, coat included, but forget she often removes her coat whilst actually at the event/visit. The belt matches her boots and makes sense when she’s not got her coat on. I actually mix and match with black/tan colours anyway so I’m quite relaxed about that.

TangledWebOfDeception · 18/01/2023 12:03

Also she automatically gets a million each points for a) boots and b) no stiletto heel.

Princess Anne tops the list, not surprised.

I'd like to thank the duke of Gloucester who matched Camilla, beat Catherine with 100 visits at 78.

TangledWebOfDeception · 18/01/2023 12:48

That doesn't take account of the quite markedly different jobs that the Monarch and his or her heir do, though, does it?

Isn't it just public engagements? That's when they're out and about, surely. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will correct me if I'm wrong...

Not dissing Anne, for whom I have a shitload of respect (especially as she had/has more than enough reason to actually complain about being the 'spare' as opposed to someone else), nor her work ethic!

However William now runs the Duchy of Cornwall which will be a very big job. The King, well he's the King and Head of State and there are many background things that go into that.

My take on it, which I accept could probably be better informed, but I've not got time nor inclination to look into it too much.

KillingMeDeftly · 18/01/2023 12:51

This is for 2022 though, so William wasn't direct heir for most of it.

TangledWebOfDeception · 18/01/2023 12:52

I wish people wouldn't get on Will and Kate's case about how little they apparently do, either. If they were out and about every single day on assignments in public, with their children being raised solely by nannies, people would be up in arms about how awful that is and how they ought to spend more time with the children. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. They've had one child at home until very recently. I think they will both be gearing up to do much more now and in years to come, as the young family situation has changed. It's career time now, and they've both stepped up a level in the family business.

TangledWebOfDeception · 18/01/2023 12:54

@KillingMeDeftly True! Just a general comment, really.

justasking111 · 18/01/2023 12:58

Sorry but I think the duke of Gloucester is a quiet plodding royal. I wasn't throwing shade on anyone else.
