I've now had a nice bowl of toasty porridge and have put on my not oversized toast clothes and am feeling less agrgieved by their sizing - but I will still pop into a shop to try things on before the next sale.

neveradullmoment99 · 11/02/2023 11:40

Also with regards to the crinkle check pinafore, I was a bit shocked to see the pattern placement was awful at the side seams of the dress. Not matching at all. At first glance you don't notice it because of the volume of fabric. I am not usually fussy about this but the check was hugely distorted. I was shocked!

Thanks for encouragement! I will report back on the lotus trews on Monday. I expect they will transform me into a slim, elegant, sophisticated person who can make small talk.

I'm heading rapidly into peri menopause here and not very pleased about it, because I've got my life in track in several ways recently and could do without more upheaval. Have also been ill a lot with covid and long covid and tedious infections, but better now and spending as much time as possible at the gym try to regain muscle strength while hormones are on my side.

Welcome Rook! Have a lovely time swanning about in that beautiful dress!

What size did you go for in these and what do you usually take in Toast sizes? For future reference only🤣🤣🤣🤣

Stravaig · 11/02/2023 12:00

@dudsville I'm enjoying having a wee bit of company in the grumpy corner :)

dudsville · 11/02/2023 12:37

we'll carry that flag together @Stravaig !

I complained to them about that a few years back with a madras check dress. They responded that their policy was not to waste fabric by pattern matching.

Oh give over, Toast. There’s a difference between wasting a lot of fabric and mitigating against the pattern being completely distorted. I was very shocked when I got my Hal jacket home from the shop. The button holes were not well finished and because they are in white cotton, it shows up (to me). And at £165 for a denim jacket, I do expect perfection.

neveradullmoment99 · 11/02/2023 15:53

They weren't just a bit mismatched, they were ridiculously mismatched. The fabric check was diagonal to the front. I have re-ordered it but that may annoy me.

dudsville · 11/02/2023 17:44

There are a lot of comments on their website about their prices. I don't shop in any other expensive shops so I don't know how they compare, but I noted on the BlakLane live video that the insides of their denim is finished (I don't know how to describe this), whereas this isn't the case with other toast denim.

Oh, I agree. The bodice on my dress has the pattern going in multiple directions. I should have listened to myself when I noted right at the beginning how much it irritates me, and sent it back. I’ve also noted recently that button holes aren’t always perfect and are sometimes slightly misaligned or too small.

Snowyowl78 · 12/02/2023 08:26

I’ve just noticed this comment on one of their reviews
I had no idea they did alterations?!
when I click the link it only talks about repairs and not alterations so I have emailed them to ask for more info

Yes @alliscalm you can see white on the Hal jacket button holes , I though it was a fraying issue but tbf you don’t see it if it’s buttoned and it’s nicely finished inside at the seams etc. I then went down a rabbit hole as I had bought mine in a John Lewis sale and I then was amazed at some of the prices I had paid for items. (In a good way)

That’s very interesting @Snowyowl78 . It’ll be interesting to hear their response.

The only time I didn’t keep something because of the pattern placement was this blouse as the flower over the pocket was not where I thought it should be or where I wanted it to be I suppose. I never did buy it as I figured I could go to and fro forever trying to get it right - right for me.

Yes it doesn’t make that much difference when the jacket is done up but it just made me a bit deflated after I’d spent that much money. I hardly buy any full price Toast but I really wanted that jacket. I make clothes too and buttonholes are quite tricky and, I think, one of the giveaways that a garment is handmade.

Snowyowl78 · 12/02/2023 13:02

They have told me to ask a shop direct about whether they do free hemming or not, I will keep y’all posted in case it’s of interest!

ScottishMouse · 12/02/2023 16:17

Packed a bag with a handful of items I hardly ever wear and headed to the swap in Edinburgh. Sadly there was nothing at all of interest. Plus all of the things there were considerably more worn looking than what I had brought. So I just took my things home again.
I was hoping to find something for a job interview I have coming up. University job, but not academic. No idea how smart I should look. It’s been years since I had an interview. I had a huge trying on session at home this morning, and struggling to find anything I am comfortable in that I think looks smart enough. Do we think the cotton linen pinafore (the older style, not the new one with the deep v) with a white shirt underneath would work? Also wondering about the slate cotton linen shirt from last year (the one with pockets that is kind of like a light jacket, and came in a blue and gold with a stripe too), or if it is too casual. And I have no smart trousers that would work with it really. Gah!

Trinitybean · 12/02/2023 16:38

Did anyone go to the Circle that isn't a circle today? Went to the Kings Road one but they didn't have a lot, mostly mid tiers and must have been quite a few years old. They did have a nice crepe green dress but too small. Glad I checked the rails before parting with my brand new linen easy dress that I should have returned! Apparently they're going to start running it more often but I don't know how if they don't have much stuff, wonder what the other stores are like.

Trinitybean · 12/02/2023 16:38

ah your message just popped up Scottish Mouse :-)

faustina · 12/02/2023 16:40

I know we discussed washing things a while back and I mentioned I'd managed to shrink a linen tee from Toast (two in fact though one is still wearable) - but I'm fairly sure that was just washing normally.

Has anyone ever managed to wreck a (nice) cotton tshirt by tumble drying? The label says don't but in the winter I don't have room in my house for wet T-shirts all over the place, and it's not like a cashmere jumper where it's a twice a season (if that) event

I tumble dry my toast cotton tees and they're fine. This is from a small brand and is on a par quality wise (if not nicer). I emailed the brand and they were not very helpful and just repeated the care advice on their website

Countmeout · 12/02/2023 16:47

The stuff on the swop rail in Mayfair(?) was pretty poor too when I was in in December. I would have been pretty reluctant to swop anything . Do most people not more likely sell stuff if they have finished / tired with it?

Re Circle - I took two unworn but beautiful quality silk dresses to a Toast shop ( bought when I was a lot bigger than I am now and pre-mastectomy) - decided not to leave them today as there was nothing approaching the quality of my items. Hmmmm....

Stoic123 · 12/02/2023 17:43

I've still got a couple of unused tokens from when I dropped off a couple of hardly worn shirts last summer and then realised only some very worn tees were available. Will sell in future.

mizu · 12/02/2023 17:49

I popped into the Cheltenham TOAST and actually got 3 things from the circle rail. Had 4 tokens from previous circles but all lower tier so couldn't get the lovely green cord skirt with 2 big patch pockets at the front which was mid tier.

Got a striped top, a boat (ish) neck silk top and a half decent dress!!!

lordloveadog · 12/02/2023 17:54

@ScottishMouse my sense would be that either of those would be smart enough if everything well ironed, plus smartish shoes.

AFingerofFudge · 12/02/2023 17:55

@mizu I also went into Toast in Cheltenham this afternoon- what time were you there, we could have been there at the same time!

I got a pair of wide leg jeans, there were some lovely things but sadly not in my size (or even near my size!)

Trinitybean · 12/02/2023 18:00

Glad some of you had Circle success, the green cord skirt sounds lovely. It is so frustrating when you don't have tokens and weirdly most stuff seems to be mid-tier even though it's clearly ancient.
