What jeans to buy if skinny jeans look amazing

I’m trying to buy jeans at the moment and it’s a nightmare. As a five foot one, curvy (but not overweight) woman in her 40’s with short legs nothing else looks as good on me. Most other styles simply are unflattering or look wrong somehow.

I started of off trying straight jeans but they were baggy and my butt looked weird. Then I tried slim fit but they sort of look like slim jeans gone wrong. It’s a bit depressing because after recently losing (I’m now healthy BMI) I’ve been able to buy lots of clothes that look amazing and have been getting loads of compliments on my new look and wardrobe. Jeans have defeated me however.

On a related topic, I’m heading to the UK next week from Australia (hence the shopping spree) and after trying on my dark blue skinnies I realised they are super flattering on me. Much more flattering than any other jeans I’ve tried on recently. Would they look out of place in London with boots and a blazer for gong out in the evening? After losing weight they’re still skinny but not skintight. It’s so hard packing for 6 degree weather when it’s over 30 degrees 😁

Stick to the skinnies, you won’t look out of place at all.

Lots of skinny jeans still about and 00s fashion is coming back now so if anything you’re ahead of the trend.

You are completely right that skinnies look best on curvier, shorter women. Keep wearing them if they look great on you! If you want to look modern, just ensure the rest of the outfit isn't dated. Boots and a blazer sounds great, but I would avoid everything being slim fit/tight. Definitely need to be an oversized blazer.

Some inspo for wearing skinny jeans, a blazer and boots but still looking modern

Why can’t you wear skinny jeans if you love them and they suit you? Just because something is “in fashion” doesn’t mean it looks good. In fact, a lot of people end up looking awful for the sake of keeping up with the latest trends, even if it doesn’t suit them. These people are completely fashion victims. Wear what you want to wear.

Mezmer · 11/01/2023 09:56

Def ways around it and agree with other posters that it is what you wear them with that counts. Knee high boots, for instance and maybe puffy sleeves on a blouse or something.

BoJoSecretGF · 11/01/2023 09:56

The young person’s fashion in London at the moment is jogging bottoms with long white sports socks over the top at the ankle so skinny jeans will be just fine.

inappropriateraspberry · 11/01/2023 09:59

Just wear skinny jeans then. I hate all these mom, girlfriend, boyfriend styles. Baggy, shapeless and make me feel like a sack.

boboshmobo · 11/01/2023 09:59

They are still very much in shops so don't worry about it ..

Im short and curvy and the dark ones can be very flattering too although I obvs don't look like those tall models in the above pics but no jeans would make me look like that.

Iamthewombat · 11/01/2023 10:02

If your question is, “will I look a bit dated in skinny jeans” then the answer is yes, but only a bit.

I understand that the shopping is much better in the U.K. than in Australia so you might find a better choice of styles in London.

Yarrawonga · 11/01/2023 10:04

I agree that they look best with boots. I still wear them and I think they suit my figure.

bluetongue · 11/01/2023 10:05

Thanks! I might still keep one of the other pairs I bought but they don’t look great with boots while I put the skinnies and short boots on and it looked great. Sexy and feminine. Loose and boyish looks great if you’re a tall, skinny teenager but they just make me look like a middle aged lesbian (not that there’s anything wrong with middle aged lesbians).

I’ve seen some Levi’s 322 shaping slim jeans which might work but I’ll probably have to roll them up or get them altered as they are 30 inch length.

I guess the question is would I rather look a bit dated but slim and feminine or trendy and frumpy (if that’s even possible).

As much as I hate shopping I may need to look at jeans in London.

My husband stocks up on clothes while in Australia because he finds it much easier to get tall clothes and big shoes without paying a fortune.

BHRK · 11/01/2023 10:14

London shopping is wonderful. Lots of skinnies still around.. unless you’re 25 where it’s all baggy and mom style.
just wear skinnies but with a lovely modern top and blazer. It’s pretty cold here at the moment

Is the OP a big, tall man? I’m reporting what female friends who have lived in Australia tell me about shopping for fashionable women’s clothes!

Shopgirl1 · 11/01/2023 10:24

Im still struggling with this also, I think skinnies suit lots of people, I’m tall and slim and also feel other jeans styles are less flattering. You won’t look out of place in skinnies at all.

CarPoor · 11/01/2023 10:28

I recently reput on my skinnies and they just look so much better than any of the other jeans I've been wearing

If skinnies are flattering wear skinnies. I've tried but despite what everyone is telling me I just prefer skinnies

CarPoor · 11/01/2023 10:30

If your long of leg, slim and young other styled look great. But I've seen so many transformations online of women switching from skinnies and they just look better in skinny jeans.

bluetongue · 11/01/2023 10:50

Thanks for the help everyone. I have another pair of jeans that I definitely be bringing which are lighter blue and somewhere between slim and skinny.

Another London / UK question. Is it worth bringing white sneakers? Mine are Adidas Stan Smith. I get they’re more a summer thing.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 11/01/2023 10:50

I'm a completely different shape to you, OP, but I also find skinnies really suit me. I'm tall but chubby, and I find loose denim just makes me look HUGE. I really don't need any help with that! It isn't loose clothes generally, I think it's the stiffness and structure of the denim that is the issue.

I'll be sticking with my skinnies (mostly with boots, so I see I am fashion-forward there, totally deliberately obviously!).

FWIW, I had this exact issue with bootcuts too, which also suit me, but all but disappeared from the shops about a decade ago!

You need to investigate the ‘slim flare’. They have been in shops for a couple of years. Even M&S do them. They look great on but you need a more fitted top to balance them out.

Iamthewombat · 11/01/2023 10:55

No, you’d need socks with them and white trainers look terrible with socks (in my opinion)

RunnerDown · 11/01/2023 10:56

I’m not tall and have short legs. After spending a fortune on other shapes of jeans I have reverted back to skinnies. They may be dated but I look and feel much better in them, and it’s so much easier to get footwear that looks right. The extra confidence I have wearing them outweighs the concern at not being “ trendy”
Levi 311 shaping skinnies do individual waist sizes and short lengths. They are very comfy

JoyPeaceHealth · 11/01/2023 10:57

Feel your pain and following. I'm 5'1'' and those super wide leg jeans look terrible on me. I look about 4'8''

Thanks. I need to get myself in when a winter clothes mindset 😁
