Bar soap for shower

Can anybody recommend a good one where the scent lasts? I prefer vanilla, chocolate (cocoa butter) scents but open to any! I've been through a few soaps (nesti Dante etc) but not found one I want to stick with!

I like the big TK Maxx bars too

What do you keep them in? I've no soap dish and got some for Christmas. Previous experience with soap dishes is that soap sits in a congealed mess, is there an alternative?

Highly recommend this one from Joseph Joseph. Its compact, the water drains to the bottom and without the usual soap dish slats it doesn't stick and leave those ridges!

(Never thought I would be enthusiastic about a soap dish 😅)

BernieWinters · 05/01/2023 23:12

Thank you for all the soap holder recommendations

Gazelda · 05/01/2023 23:18

I've got the same Joseph Joseph soap dish as @NightOwlNotEarlyBird. One in the shower and one on the washbasin.

I use L'Occitane generally, and love to pick up large bars in NT places or street markets.

L'Occitane do a travel tin for taking smaller bars of soap on hols.

I worry about soap blocking up the drains, but it hasn't happened yet in the 2 years I've swapped from shower gel.

I am trying to support UK products and business. Discovered The Clovelly Soap Company a few years ago. They have some lovely scents.

Do people not find they get terrible soap scum using soap? I used it for a couple of years, the huge Nesti Dante ones, and loved them, but I came to realise that they were making a right mess of my shower and I'm sure the soap scum had started blocking the drain as well? I do live in a very hard water area.

Yes, I did and it made cleaning the bath harder than it needed to be. I switched to Dove bars as they leave significantly less residue on the bath and sink.

Not really, but I have always used soap and not shower gel/body wash so I have no point of comparison. I think the hardness of the water makes a difference, and we have moderately hard water where we live.

Dove isn’t soap though which is why it doesn’t leave soap residue

Roger and Gallet bar soap, I'm sure I'm misspelling. I once stayed in a very nice hotel in Monte Carlo and they had this. It wheeled so nice I would put the daily soap in my luggage so that we were given more. I used them as drawer scents for years. i then grew up and realised my local village pharmacy stock it, but you can also get it on line.

I didn't say it was soap, which is something that only seems to matter on Mumsnet.

NegroniLover · 06/01/2023 08:07

I don't find using soap makes any more of a mess in the shower than gel or shampoo which we also hace & use. We live in a hard water area but have filters on our pump.
We just use a shower cleaning spray on the shower doors & it works fine.
Roger & Gallet soap is lovely too!
During lockdown I splashed out & bought Santa Maria Novella soaps online.
They were so incredibly beautifully packaged & smelled amazing but they didn't last as long as the L'Occitane so we reverted back

BorisJohnsonsHair · 06/01/2023 08:25

Ooh la la look at this! I'd love this.

I love these too. They are nicer than the l'occitane ones but don't last as long. Can often get them on sale at M&S

Just looked up Jo Malone soaps - HOW MUCH??

I would need something like this , I gave up on soap , the number of times I dropped the bar on my feet <ouch>

dudsville · 07/01/2023 07:40

@BorisJohnsonsHair , I'm off to Google how one uses that!

Another bar soap suggestion, Original Source do two scents, so not of use to the OP.

ShaunaTheSheep · 07/01/2023 08:09

I like the Kew soaps, often found in National Trust gift shops and in garden centres. Lots of scents and last for ages.

catfunk · 07/01/2023 08:47

Tk maxx !
I also love the scent of the blue pears bar... probably not everyone's cup of tea but I like it

So do we, but I can't always find it. The only place I have seen it is in the local Savers shop. I always pop in when I am in town to see if they have any.

These always smell divine in the shops. Does the smell last on your skin when used as well?

asparalite · 07/01/2023 10:56

I know you said soap but wanting to get away from buying shower gel endlessly I thought I'd give the Cerave cleansing bar a try and have found it to be very nice to use

I use the Rose scented Argan oil soap as it doesn’t dry my skin.

That reminds me of an Arabella Weir anecdote when she said she was regifted a soap on a rope and it had a pube on it.

We have sandalwood soap from India (via Amazon. Love the smell

That's a blast from the past. That was my mum's favouite soap scent. I must get some as I love it as well. I think hers was a Yardley soap.
