How often do you get your roots done?

2023 will be the year I make a consistent effort with my appearance. 🤣

So, to that end, how often do you get your roots done? It sounds stupid but I never go to the HD just to get my roots done so I don't know how often I should budget for. I seem to always have roots.

I currently have bleached hair but I'll be going back to brunette because it will be cheaper and the appointments should be shorter.

My hair is dyed blonde and I get my roots done every six weeks.

fedupsweetpea · 27/12/2022 21:23

Depending on what colour / how obvious the roots, every 6-8 weeks. My husband used to colour and cut (😂😂) my hair. I was run ragged with the kids and it was just not on my radar. But the last couple of years I have made having my hair cut and coloured by a stylist I love, a necessity. We were incredibly hard up for a year with my husband had a career change so I saved up my Xmas & birthday money to mean I could carry it on x

Iamnotausername · 27/12/2022 21:34

Last time I had my roots done (bleach), it took 7hrs including travel. I have lots of hair and my HD is a perfectionist. I'm definately not spending one Saturday in 6 at the HD! 🤣

I wasn't 100% convinced about going brunette but if I have to go that often, it's definately happening.

Every 6 weeks without fail - if my hairdresser or I are on holiday I make it 5 weeks!
it just makes me feel better - I used to try and stretch it out to save money but always ended up feeling like my hair looked awful for quite a lot of the time

dementedpixie · 27/12/2022 21:36

Every 8 to 9 weeks
I have highlights and as I get grey roots they blend in a bit too

astarsheis · 27/12/2022 22:11

Every 4 weeks to the day, it takes two hours and is my favourite day of the month

TheOGCCL · 27/12/2022 22:33

I have been dying my hair blonde myself and would say the roots get prominent at about six weeks. I actually prefer some roots so wouldn't rush to dye it again at that point.

Redcrayons · 27/12/2022 22:42

Highlights every six months because it takes so long and I can’t cope with being the hairdressers all day. .

roots 6-8 weeks depending on what I’m doing. If I’m working from home and not going out anywhere I’ll make do with some root spray.

My roots come though as grey and my hair is naturally dark brown. Roots usually takes about 2 hours.

TheGirlWhoTamedTheDragon · 28/12/2022 09:34

I have dark hair. The roots need doing to hide greys every 5-6 weeks. That part doesn't take too long, two hours in total at the hairdresser for colour, cut and dry. I have a longer appt every 2-3 times I visit to put more of the colour worked through the lower parts as a balayge as that doesn't need lightening every time.

Maybe doing that would work for you as then you'd still have some natural looking colour variation but not so much time needed at the hairdresser regularly. I like my hair this way as it now looks exactly like it did when I was younger so had no grey but the ends went lighter on their own due to regular holidays in the sunshine!

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 28/12/2022 09:36

I have a root smudge at my roots so i never have to worry as i never have obvious roots, means i go to the hairdresser every 12-14 weeks and have the rest of my highlights and toner done then as well

Happygirl79 · 28/12/2022 09:39

What is a root smudge? @Youcancallmeirrelevant

Season0fTheWitch · 28/12/2022 09:40

Every 5-6 weeks. I have thick long blonde hair so it can take a good few hours. Worth it though

waltty · 28/12/2022 09:45

I have dark brown hair and go every 3 weeks , i am fortunate my hairdresser is brilliant and also cheap, I pay £30 for roots and blow dry.
If it was as expensive as what some of you pay I would not be able to do it

purplecorkheart · 28/12/2022 09:49

I have dark hair and really should every six weeks but have been stretching it to eight weeks recently. I tend to wear my hair up so the only place you really notice is at my temple.

WhereAreWeNow · 28/12/2022 12:46

I have dark hair. I do my roots every 4 weeks. You can see roots from 3 weeks but I stretch it out with some hair mascara.

Doesn't hair mascara get on your pillow? Goes to show I don't wash my hair every day ...

Basically my brown roots are built into the hairstyle, so i have brown that blends down into blonde as my always style. The brown matches my natural hair colour so as the week goes by i end up with slightly more brown, but the style still looks the same

wineandsunshine · 28/12/2022 13:30

Mine is dark brown and needs root touch up every 4-6 weeks.

The L'Oréal colour spray is really good to hide greys (just don't touch your hair and then face!)

Thank you. Very helpful

Splonker · 28/12/2022 13:35

I have dark hair and I dye my own. I touch-in my parting using a paintbrush every 2 weeks because my hair grows very fast. It only takes 10mins though so is very easy. This way I never have that badger look and there's no strong gradient change over time..

BethDuttonsTwin · 28/12/2022 13:40

Every 4-5 months. I can't afford it more than that. I time it for holidays, special occasions and it lasts a long time i between. I hate getting it done anyway, so tedious to sit in the salon for three-four hours, but I prefer to be blonde so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Iamnotausername · 28/12/2022 15:38

Thanks everyone that is really helpful.

Mind made up. I am going brown and will budget in 6 weekly appointments and hope I can stretch that to bi-monthly. I can (just about) cope with a few hours at the HD that often.

I think I'll go something like Trinny Woodhall here (I can't post pics): www.harveynichols.com/news/2022/06/10/trinny-london-is-here/

My natural colour is patchy grey so the root blend/smudge effects don't work for me. I'd just end up with blonde at the bottom, brown at the at the top and a nasty brown grey mix at the roots.

It also means that whatever colour I am, my roots look awful so I can't incorporate them.

I genuingely love grey hair BTW. I let mine grow out completely hoping that it would look good but it was too patchy and uneven on me. The front which was mainly different greys and whites looked amazing but the back was my natural "brown" and it looked a dirty ugly colour so I am not embracing the grey until I am more grey! 🤣

GiltEdges · 28/12/2022 15:43

Every 4/5 weeks, without fail. I’m brunette, but have been blonde before and 4 weeks was the absolute maximum I could go without it looking awful, as my hair grows fast.

Iamnotausername · 28/12/2022 15:49

Sorry, another question. Do you all get your hair cut every time too?

Before bleaching it, it would only need cutting a few times a year. The bleach means it needs cutting more often now but I'm trying to grow it.

astarsheis · 28/12/2022 16:26

I get my roots done every 4 weeks as mentioned. I'm blond (well...grey) and then also get highlights maybe 2-3 times/year and it is shoulder length so get it cut maybe every 3rd visit.
