How often do you get your roots done?

2023 will be the year I make a consistent effort with my appearance. 🤣

So, to that end, how often do you get your roots done? It sounds stupid but I never go to the HD just to get my roots done so I don't know how often I should budget for. I seem to always have roots.

I currently have bleached hair but I'll be going back to brunette because it will be cheaper and the appointments should be shorter.

Every 5 weeks.
I'm dark but very grey. I went blonde a few years ago as dying it dark to cover grey meant I needed to go fortnightly, and it was too much.

WhereAreWeNow · 28/12/2022 16:41

Not that I've noticed @blueshoes . It sets once it's dry and doesn't budge until you wash it out. I don't use that much. Just on my parting and temples.

sweetkitty · 28/12/2022 16:44

Every 5 weeks to get my roots blonded. It’s a total pain.

Baconand · 28/12/2022 16:45

10 weeks here, they need doing at 6-8 weeks but I have had to stretch it to make it cheaper. Brunette, dye isn’t a million miles off my natural colour, so it’s just the grey that shows.
If money were no object I’d go back to 6-8 weeks.

CoffeeBoy · 28/12/2022 16:49

This is why I just use a box dye as it takes 30 mins. I don’t have the time to spend so long at the hairdressers!

Thanks for the explanation, wherearewenow

I have highlights and aim for 4 times a year. My appointment is the second week in January and they are ready now but I just eek it out. More to keep my hair healthy really.

GloomyDarkness · 28/12/2022 17:09

Mind made up. I am going brown and will budget in 6 weekly appointments and hope I can stretch that to bi-monthly. I can (just about) cope with a few hours at the HD that often.

If you go brown you could try colour deposit shampoo and conditioners - Defy Grey John Frieda Brunette Blending Shampoo and Defy Grey John Frieda Brunette Blending Conditioner - I think wash in colours which could help push out dyeing time - they seem to do that for me but I think others don't find it works as well for them.

Iamnotausername · 28/12/2022 17:16

@GloomyDarkness

Thank you. I haven't tried those particular ones but I've tried colour deposting shampoos in the past and they were great for topping up and when it starts to go brassy but they never did much for my roots unfortunately. Too much white I think.

Every five weeks. My hair is naturally very dark brown with quite a lot of grey, but the grey isn’t dispersed evenly (I have a Mallen streak) and it’s a bloody nightmare. I have a balayage every ten weeks which takes four hours, and a root regrowth appointment in between which takes 2.

limitededitionbarbie · 28/12/2022 21:04

I have a root smudge. Can recommend.

I have a red balayage. Brown roots. Hairdresser just does my roots now and will drag the red up again nearer the roots in a few weeks. It's easily the most cost effective and lazy hair for me. I get a curly blow for special occasions.

At a push - ie of covid ever happened again I could do my own roots

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 28/12/2022 21:38

I go every 6-7 weeks but only get my roots done every alternate appointment. The other appt is just a toner and a trim. My hair grows slowly though.

Thanks for the thread OP, it’s been interesting reading the responses! I’ve had blonde highlights since I was in my mid teens but I’m seriously considering going back to my natural colour (brunette) as I don’t get my roots done often enough (the hairdresser couldn’t fit me in last time I rang so I’ve only had them done twice this year 😬). I’m just worried I’ll hate the brunette and then it’ll take ages to get back to the blonde I have now. I have my natural colour included in the highlights so it doesn’t look too harsh when it grows out but I still feel like my colour looks bad more often that it looks good!

Bestcatmum · 28/12/2022 22:48

I'm sick to death of doing my roots and my hair always looking bad so I've had a really decent ballyage done and it looks amazing. I only have to go every 8 weeks and no roots and I can still be blond. That's not my hair but it looks very similar.

Also I have a white hao at the front but they incorporate that brilliantly so it all looks natural.

Eatentoomanyroses · 28/12/2022 22:57

I also get a root drag done ( brown roots/ blonde highlights) and I touch it up myself at around 4/5 weeks. I then go to the hairdressers about 9/10 weeks.

Why don't you try a balayage? Still get the light but your mellow plot between your roots and ends?

Is that your hair? It looks amazing! It looks really thick and healthy.

wizzywig · 28/12/2022 23:38

3 weeks with my grey hair

limitededitionbarbie · 28/12/2022 23:39

Sorry I didn't read all of your post!

Iamnotausername · 29/12/2022 10:07

I've had balage before. It was by a good HD who won recognised colour awards (not bragging, just to show it wasn't a rubbish HD) but it only looked good when it was down and slightly curled. It looked amazing then.

However when it was down and straightish, it just looked like patchy, blocky lowlights and when it was in a ponytail it looked like my ponytail was a different colour to the rest of the hair.

Maybe it was the length of my hair at the time.

My brown always goes brassy and all the different colours ended up fading to the same orange colour. And I still ende up with awful roots. 🤣

It isn't my hair but my hair looks almost exactly like that. I'm 60 years old and my hair has I.proved 100% since I started having this done as theu are not using bleach all the time.

I've never had that problem I must say.

Passthecake30 · 31/12/2022 08:57

I’m have a dark blonde root tint every 6 weeks, and a few lowlights run through every 3rd time. I also use 1/2 box root touch up at the 3rd week as my hair grows fast and it’s very grey (or so my teenagers like to point out)

LoveCillian · 31/12/2022 08:58

Every 6 weeks at the hairdresser
