Oh I would have hated to have had clothes bought for me when I was 18!

RJnomore1 · 10/12/2022 13:56

She’s eating a sausage roll and Atching the guardians of the galaxy Christmas special with me 😁 but we both have covid so we are restricted to quarters.

Good luck, I get what you’re trying to do.

shinynewapple22 · 10/12/2022 14:01

Is this for her 18th birthday present ? Unless you are hugely wealthy I don't really understand the spending of that amount of money on a dress. Are there not better things to spend £300 on - either for a memento of her special day or for practicality.

DucklingDaisy · 10/12/2022 14:03

Wolf and Badger also have some bodycon and/or cutout dresses that look a bit classier than the Shein versions, I can't seem to post links but I saw a couple of lovely red ones.

At least it still feeds. It's about the only way I can 'mother' these days. And I am clearly not doing a good job right now trying to breach that social contract. I'm overstepping the mark significantly.

Btw it's a lovely image of you two and your daughter sounds adorable.

It's almost like the diary of a cat when you have a teenager. We are the overlords lol.

I get what you’re trying to do, too, and your gestures are one of a loving Mum. Tried to find my 18 yr old for opinion but she is out.

I had similar problems where I had to ask mine to moderate her clothing to dress more appropriately for the setting. She replied that I don’t buy her enough clothes/she doesn’t have enough cash for clothes so I tried similar tactic. It worked, to some extent!

Good luck finding something you are both happy with.

Betterthing · 10/12/2022 14:07

Meant to say - we also both like Wolf & Badger!

Also helpful for our bonding was when I had to ask her to dress me for a wedding!

Thank you! I remember being envious of a student at uni whose parents had bought her a really expensive grungy Diesel jacket for her 18th.

Dd isn't in a grunge type phase (though that might come!).

I've tried that and she wants me dressed like Martha Stewart!

Apparently the only thing dignified for a woman of my senior years is what I would describe as a 'frock' from Little house on the prairie!

I actually wish I went through more of a skimpy dress phase ag that age, I didn't tend to get dolled up very often but I had the body for it.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 10/12/2022 14:13

I think they are all too old for her, my 16yo wouldn't wear anything like that. They are closer in style to me, age 46. It won't be a treat if she doesn't like the style or value the brand.

What would your 16 year old prefer?

£108 for a hat ! Jeez oh,

VisitingThem · 10/12/2022 14:20

Would some fancy shoes be a safer bet OP? You said she wears DM's with the dresses?

daisyjgrey · 10/12/2022 14:20

Let her wear what she wants, fucking hell.

TJ17 · 10/12/2022 14:31

Notaninterestingfact · 10/12/2022 13:11

Unfortunately if this is the kind of thing she likes she is defiantly not going to wear anything on your list. There’s absolutely no point in trying to make her wear what you what her to as it won’t happen.
It’s just going to gather dust in the back of the wardrobe and at best get a few laughs from her friends…

TJ17 · 10/12/2022 14:32

I meant definitely* but defiantly also works in this case 🤣

Notaninterestingfact · 10/12/2022 13:34

None of those dresses cover their asses! Believe me, this is me trying to match her taste but with a labelled product as a treat. God almighty.

You’re backpedaling and trying to make it seem like it was just a nice idea for a treat, despite you literally saying…

Because I don't want her dressing like a hooker because she will be judged as such!‘

‘The lady in question appears to be lured by Shein dresses with tits, ass and legs out. I'm trying to find something to her taste but which might also be somewhat more dignified. 🙄’

You are trying to enforce something ‘more dignified’ under the guise of a treat.

Pretty Little Thing or Shein to be honest but not quite so revealing. This is one of her PLT favourites

gogohmm · 10/12/2022 14:42

My eldest would but she hasn't got typical fashion taste for her age (she also like seasalt!)

My younger dd would hate all of them and me for interfering with what she wants to wear.

gogohmm · 10/12/2022 14:47

But I agree @Notaninterestingfact the dress she has already is, curious. My swimsuit has more fabric!

I battle dd2 over dress a bit (or did, she's 22 now so has matured) and they weren't that bad.

Can you not take her shopping - H&M plus a few independents if you have them are where we go

Upsidedownagain · 10/12/2022 14:54

My 17.5 year old most certainly wouldn't wear any of them. The pink number you linked is much more her style. Key characteristics are tight/ close fitting and as much flesh on show as possible.

Why spend so much on something I think you know she won't like? My dd is also into baggy designer track suits and trainers ( over or with the skimpy stuff) . These can be quite expensive if you want to flash the cash.

Or a piece of jewellery? My dd has asked for a fairly pricey Pandora bracelet for Christmas.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/12/2022 14:59

The tuxedo dress (1) would look better without sleeves eather that the cold shoulder ones

My DD is 20 and wouldn't wear any of them but she wouldn't wear the Ibiza one either !
